Retrospective data, Journal:  Assessment of nationally recommended antibiotics for treatment of UTI in U.S.-Mexico border emergency departments. (Pubmed Central) -  Oct 25, 2022
Although not listed as first line agents per current IDSA recommendations, 2nd and 3rd generation cephalosporins, and amoxicillin/clavulanate would be acceptable options given resistance patterns demonstrated in accordance with IDSA allowance for tailoring selection to local resistance. Nitrofurantoin appears to be consistent with recommendations and demonstrates a favorable resistance profile for treatment of outpatient UTI within this region.

Journal:  Bimetallic CuZn alloy-embedded hollow porous carbon nanocubes derived from 3D-Cu/ZIF-8 as efficient electrocatalysts for environmental pollutant detection in water bodies. (Pubmed Central) -  Oct 23, 2022
Excessive use of nitrofurantoin (NFT) and its residues can be harmful to the ecosystem, and to mitigate this, rapid and cost-effective detection of NFT in water bodies is needed...Fabricated CuZn/HPCNC-modified screen-printed electrode (SPE) for NFT reduction have a wide linear range with a low detection limit, and high sensitivity (15.343 μA μМ-1 cm-2), appreciable anti-interference ability with related nitro compounds, storage stability, reproducibility, and repeatability. Also, the practicability of CuZn/HPCNC/SPE can be successfully employed in NFT monitoring in water bodies (drinking water, pond water, river water, and tap water) with satisfactory recoveries.

  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Can Urinalysis and Past Medical History of Kidney Stones Predict Urine Antibiotic Resistance? (Pubmed Central) -  Oct 14, 2022
This cs-SlipChip provides a practical high-throughput and rapid phenotypic method for AST and can also be used to screen different chemicals and antibiotic combinations for the treatment of multiple antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Women with any history of kidney stones may have bacteriuria resistant to nitrofurantoin, suggesting that providers might consider alternative antibiotic therapies in this scenario.

Journal:  Integrated Genotoxicity Testing of three anti-infective drugs using the TGx-DDI transcriptomic biomarker and high-throughput CometChip assay in TK6 cells. (Pubmed Central) -  Oct 11, 2022
We paired the TGx-DDI biomarker with the CometChip assay in TK6 cells to evaluate three model agents: nitrofurantoin (NIT), metronidazole (MTZ), and novobiocin (NOV)...The lack of DNA damage for NIT and MTZ was confirmed by the CometChip results, which were negative for all three drugs except at overtly cytotoxic concentrations. This case study demonstrates the utility of combining the TGx-DDI biomarker and CometChip to resolve conflicting genotoxicity data and provides further validation to support the reproducibility of the biomarker.
