Like nitrofurantoin, we find that ES24 requires activation by the NfsA and NfsB nitroreductases, suggesting that the formation of highly reactive nitroso intermediates is essential for target inactivation in vivo.

Our study confirmed biodegradation of the antibiotics by the microbial consortium, with the degradation efficiency within 10 days of 65% for FZD, but only 20% for NFT. The kinetic study proved that the presence of analysed antibiotics had no adverse effect on the microbes, but the consortium behaviour differ significantly with the NFT reducing the consumption of organic carbon in wastewater and increasing the production of extracellular biopolymeric and volatile organic compounds, and the FZD reducing assimilation of other carbon sources to a less extent, at the expense of cellular focus on biodegradation of this antibiotic.

These uropathogens were found to be resistant to the majority of the routinely-used classes of β-lactams, pyridopyrimidines, quinolones, and fluoroquinolone antibiotics, and these findings may be useful for clinicians in their treatment of paediatric UTIs.

There was no difference in incidence of complications among men diagnosed with lower urinary tract infection treated with narrow- or broad-spectrum antibiotics. In spite of higher incidence of therapy failure and recurrence, treatment with narrow-spectrum antibiotics seems to be an optimal choice regarding preventing complications when treating men diagnosed with lower UTI.

Pronounced declines in paediatric populations are promising, and further research is underway to examine prescribing quality.

However, to our knowledge, this is the first report showing differences in the ABs profile between wild and aquaculture salmonids, which could have both environmental and health consequences.

The presence of multidrug-resistant zoonotic staphylococci in clinically healthy dogs and dogs with skin lesions is an animal health and human health concern.

The E. coli strains detected from urine samples to clarify complicated urinary tract infections showed a sensitivity, of just under 80 % to trimethoprim. Since an approximately 10 % better sensitivity rate was found for uncomplicated community-acquired urinary tract infections that usually do not require microbiological diagnostics, in our opinion, in transferring this observation in the Rhine-Main area and in Hesse, trimethoprim can also continue to be used empirically for uncomplicated urinary tract infections.

Extending from those studies, we developed two series of analogs with key substructures resembling those of known antibacterials, nitroxoline (hydroxyquinoline moiety) and nifuroxazide/nitrofurantoin (bis-cyclic-N-acylhydrazone scaffolds)...Consequently, this study has identified a new target of nitrofuran-containing drugs, and is the first reported instance of such a unique class of GroEL/ES chaperonin inhibitors. The intriguing results presented herein provide impetus for expanded studies to validate inhibitor mechanisms and optimize this antibacterial class using the respective GroEL/ES chaperonin systems and nitroreductases from E. coli and the ESKAPE bacteria.

Statistical analysis with Fisher's exact test showed a statistically significant relationship between biofilm production and resistance to cotrimoxazole, vancomycin and cefotaxime...The presence of E. faecalis strains resistant to co-trimoxazole and vancomycin and present of some virulence factors is alarming the researchers. Since antibiotic resistance genes are probably transmitted among enterococci, and Staphylococci, controlling infections made by enterococci as well as the appropriate administration of antibiotics could treat the nosocomial infections effectively.
