The isolates were susceptible to cefpirome (39.87%) and tobramycin (39.87%) and resistant to sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (75.32%), followed by levofloxacin (61.39%), when tested by tube dilution method. The study concluded high degree of resistance against Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, in contrast, cephalosporin and Imipenem exhibited good potency which can be recommended for UTI.

The antibacterial of pomegranate peels extracts was more effective against Staphylococcus aureus than Escherichia coli, the high concentration yielded far superior results than the low concentration.

This large, randomised, pragmatic trial in a routine NHS setting has clearly shown that methenamine hippurate is not inferior to current standard care (daily low-dose antibiotics) in preventing recurrent urinary tract infections in women. The results suggest that antimicrobial resistance is proportionally higher in women taking prophylactic antibiotics.

Like trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, nitrofurantoin carries a warning for patients with known sensitivity to oxidant drugs, notably glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, in whom it may cause haemolytic anaemia...Early studies of erythrocyte survival following nitrofurantoin suggest it is less likely to cause oxidant haemolysis in individuals with G6PD deficiency than primaquine...The evidence suggests a total daily dose of 200 mg nitrofurantoin may be used for short (3-5 day) course urinary tract infection treatment without G6PD screening when accompanied by appropriate advice. Pharmacovigilance in countries with high prevalence of G6PD-deficiency is recommended to monitor for serious adverse events.

The incidence of adverse events was found to be more in fosfomycin relative to the nitrofurantoin group (RR 1.05, 95% CI - 0.59, 1.87). Hence, single-dose fosfomycin presents a potentially useful and safe treatment option for the treatment of uncomplicated UTI in women and asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnancy.
