    A Case of Paraneoplastic Trigeminal Neuropathy in the Setting of Renal Cell Carcinoma (Colorado Convention Center | Exhibit Hall B-E) -  Mar 8, 2024 - Abstract #AAN2024AAN_4127;
    Despite treatment with carbamazepine, the pain worsened and became bilateral prompting an ED visit...To our knowledge, this represents the first reported case of trigeminal neuropathy associated with RCC, featuring pain phenotypically consistent with burning mouth syndrome and bilateral trigeminal nerve enhancement on imaging. The patient's clinical and radiographic improvement post-tumor resection emphasizes the significance of considering paraneoplastic neuropathy in cases of trigeminal neuropathic pain and conducting thorough secondary work-up.
  • ||||||||||  A Case of Satoyoshi Syndrome with Predominantly Neurological Symptoms (Colorado Convention Center | Exhibit Hall B-E) -  Mar 8, 2024 - Abstract #AAN2024AAN_3762;
    Neurologists should maintain a comprehensive perspective and not overlook non-neurological symptoms in patients. Distinguishing involuntary movements can be particularly challenging for neurologists.
  • ||||||||||  TBC1D24 Mutation Presenting as Post-partum New Onset Refractory Status Epilepticus (Colorado Convention Center | Exhibit Hall B-E) -  Mar 8, 2024 - Abstract #AAN2024AAN_3654;
    This variant has been reported in one other non-related heterozygous carrier who presented in infanthood with prolonged tonic-clonic seizures during febrile episodes. While this individual showed a dramatic improvement in seizure control associated with less frequent febrile episodes, no prior response to immunomodulatory therapies have been previously described in TBC1D24 variants.

    Physiologically-based Pharmacokinetic Modeling for Assessment of the Drug-drug Interaction Potential of Zavegepant (Colorado Convention Center | Exhibit Hall B-E) -  Mar 8, 2024 - Abstract #AAN2024AAN_3210;
    Models predicted DDI of intranasal zavegepant with single-dose (SD) or MD rifampin, cyclosporine A (OATP1B3, NTCP, and P-gp inhibitor), and moderate (efavirenz) or strong (carbamazepine) CYP3A4 and/or P-gp inducers...PBPK modeling and observed clinical pharmacokinetic data support zavegepant labeling recommendations that CYP3A4 inhibitors/inducers or P-gp inhibitors do not have clinically relevant effects on zavegepant exposure. OATP1B3/NTCP inhibitors may significantly increase zavegepant exposure and co-administration should be avoided.

  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Lettre to editor: Case report of an ictal asystole as debut in new onset epilepsy. (Pubmed Central) -  Mar 6, 2024
    Anti-seizures drugs must be initiated in all patients, and there is a recommendation to avoid those with negative inotropic and arrhythmogenic effects (such as phenytoin, carbamazepine, and lacosamide). There is a discussion about pacemaker indication, however, it is highly recommended in non-controlled epilepsy and in ictal asystoles that last for more than 6

    Journal:  The Effects of the Fraction Isolated from Iranian Buthotus shach Scorpion Venom on Synaptic Plasticity, Learning, Memory, and Seizure Susceptibility. (Pubmed Central) -  Mar 6, 2024
    At first, ventricular cannulation was performed in rats, and then the active fraction (i.e., F3), carbamazepine, and the vehicle were microinjected into the brain before seizure induction by the subcutaneous (SC) injection of pentylenetetrazol (PTZ)...Our results support the antiepileptic effects of the F3 fraction of BS venom, evidenced by behavioral and electrophysiological studies. However, the effects of this fraction on memory and learning were not in the same direction, suggesting the involvement of two different pathways.

    Retrospective data, Journal:  Collateral-Pricking and Bloodletting Cupping Combined with Electroacupuncture for Postherpetic Neuralgia: A Meta-Analysis. (Pubmed Central) -  Mar 2, 2024
    Existing evidence suggests that the combination of collateral-pricking and bloodletting cupping and electroacupuncture demonstrates efficacy in pain relief, improvement of sleep quality, and enhanced therapeutic outcomes for patients with postherpetic neuralgia. However, further validation through large-scale multicenter randomized controlled trials is warranted due to the limited quantity and quality of the included literature in this study.
  • ||||||||||  Reimbursement, US reimbursement, Journal, Claims database:  Comparing the efficacy of anti-seizure medications using matched cohorts on a large insurance claims database. (Pubmed Central) -  Feb 28, 2024
    However, we note that our data set for this study only used insurance claims events, which does not comprise actual seizure frequencies, nor a clear picture of side effects. Our results do not advocate for any change in practice but demonstrate that conclusions from large databases may differ from and supplement those of randomized trials and clinical practice and therefore may guide further investigation.

    Biomarker, Journal:  Pharmacogenetics and Oxcarbazepine in Children and Adolescents: Beyond HLA-B*15:02. (Pubmed Central) -  Feb 24, 2024
    While preemptive genetic testing for HLA-B*15:02 in individuals of Asian ancestry is recommended to prevent severe hypersensitivity reactions to oxcarbazepine, oxcarbazepine concentrations and AKR1C variation may contribute to the risk of severe adverse reactions. We provide recommendations for future study to elucidate whether these individual factors are important for reducing the risk of severe adverse events.

    Journal:  Natural Silicates Encapsulated Enzymes as Green Biocatalysts for Degradation of Pharmaceuticals. (Pubmed Central) -  Feb 15, 2024
    With the natural silicate as a core and silica layer as a shell, it was possible to encapsulate two different enzymes: horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and laccase, for removal and degradation of three pharmaceuticals: diclofenac (DFC), carbamazepine (CBZ), and paracetamol (PC)...The immobilization method played a significant role in this process by providing stability and protection for the enzymes over 3 weeks. Furthermore, the enzymes acted differently in the three chosen supports due to their complex chemical composition, which could have an effect on the overall enzyme activity.

    Review, Journal:  Interactions between antiseizure medications and foods and drinks: A systematic review. (Pubmed Central) -  Feb 12, 2024
    Drugs-foods (-drinks) interactions may change the drug exposure or plasma levels of drugs (e.g., grapefruit juice increases carbamazepine concentrations and the bioavailability of cannabidiol is increased 4-5 folds with concomitant intake of fat-rich food); this may require dosage adjustments...PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY: Interactions between antiseizure medications and foods and drinks may be important. This should be taken into consideration in patients with epilepsy.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  The teratogenesis risk associated with antiseizure medication duotherapy in women with epilepsy. (Pubmed Central) -  Feb 11, 2024
    Leaving aside issues in relation to seizure control, our data suggest that it would be best to avoid using established teratogenic antiseizure medications (carbamazepine, valproate and topiramate) in combination with each other due to the increased FM risks. When combining an established teratogenic medication with a less teratogenic one, i.e. lamotrigine, levetiracetam or clonazepam, lamotrigine appears to be the safer option.

    Journal:  Reinvestigation on High-Valent Cobalt for the Degradation of Micropollutants in the Co(II)/Peroxymonosulfate System: Roles of Co(III). (Pubmed Central) -  Feb 9, 2024
    Additionally, the degradation pathway of CBZ by Co(III) and the Co(II)/PMS system was comparatively explored, confirming that Co(III) participated in the hydroxylation, carbonylation, deacetylation, and ring reduction of CBZ by the Co(II)/PMS system. Our work addresses the controversy regarding the reactive Co species involved in the Co(II)/PMS system with evidence of Co(III) as the chief one, which highlights the significance of re-evaluating the relative contribution of Co(III) in relevant environmental decontamination processes.

    Journal:  Synthesis technique and electron beam damage study of nanometer-thin single-crystalline thymine. (Pubmed Central) -  Feb 2, 2024
    This raises interesting questions about the role of the fast relaxation processes of electron scattering-induced excited states, extending the concept of radiation hardening beyond photoexcited states. The high stability of thymine in particular opens the door for further studies of these ultrafast relaxation processes giving rise to the high stability of DNA to UV radiation.
