Preclinical, Journal:  Posttreatment Intervention With Lycium Barbarum Polysaccharides is Neuroprotective in a Rat Model of Chronic Ocular Hypertension. (Pubmed Central) -  Feb 1, 2020
However, both LBP treatments preserved the retinal ganglion cells (RGC) and retinal functions up to week 15, which were significantly reduced in vehicle control. LBP posttreatment arrested the subsequent neuronal degeneration after treatment commencement and preserved RGC density and retinal functions in a chronic OHT model, which was comparable with pretreatment outcomes.

Journal:  Lycium barbarum polysaccharides protects retinal ganglion cells against oxidative stress injury. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 31, 2020
The results of flow cytometric analysis showed LBP could effectively reduce the CoCl-induced retinal ganglion cell apoptosis, inhibited the generation of reactive oxygen species and the reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential. These findings suggested that LBP could protect retinal ganglion cells from CoCl-induced apoptosis by reducing mitochondrial membrane potential and reactive oxygen species.

Preclinical, Journal:  The protective effects of lycium barbarum polysaccharides on retinal neurons in diabetic rats and its mechanism (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 7, 2019
The rescue effect of LBP posttreatment was observed later, which arrested the secondary degeneration and improved the retinal function. LBP can improve retinal oxidative stress and exert beneficial neuroprotective effects in diabetic rats, and its mechanism may be associated with the activation of the Nrf2/HO-1 antioxidant pathway.

Journal:  Delay of cone degeneration in retinitis pigmentosa using a 12-month treatment with Lycium barbarum supplement. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 21, 2019

LBP can improve retinal oxidative stress and exert beneficial neuroprotective effects in diabetic rats, and its mechanism may be associated with the activation of the Nrf2/HO-1 antioxidant pathway. LB supplement provides a neuroprotective effect for the retina and could help delay or minimize cone degeneration in RP.
