Although other causes of hypokalemia are likely to be diagnosed more frequently (e.g., due to diuretic therapy or diarrhea), the possibility of ?-lactam-induced renal potassium loss should always be considered in individuals with so-called 'unexplained hypokalemia'.

In this analysis, we have shown that an alternative approach to reporting positive wound swab cultures has resulted in a large reduction in post-report antibiotic initiation, suggesting that the current standard method of reporting generates considerable unnecessary antibiotic use. Using bio-sCAPA, we analysed the phenotypic characteristics of single Staphylococcus aureus cells tolerant to flucloxacillin and rifampicin killing. We find that antibiotic-tolerant S. aureus cells do not display significant heterogeneity in growth rate and are instead characterised by prolonged lag-time phenotypes alone.
