    Preclinical, Journal:  Selegiline Improves Cognitive Impairment in the Rat Model of Alzheimer's Disease. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 27, 2025
    However, oral administration of SEL improved spatial cognitive decline in the A?-induced AD rats. The results suggest that improvement of neuroplasticity deficiency, regulation of oxidant/antioxidant status, and suppression of neuronal loss by SEL may be the mechanisms underlying its beneficial effect against AD-related spatial cognitive impairment.

    Journal:  Effects of selegiline on neuronal autophagy involving ?-synuclein secretion. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 4, 2024
    Additionally, fractionation experiments showed that selegiline-induced ?-syn secretion occurred in non-extracellular vesicle fractions of primary neurons and SH-SY5Y cells. Collectively, these findings show that selegiline promotes neuronal autophagy involving secretion of non-exosomal ?-syn via a change of cytosolic Ca2+ levels.

    Protective effect of Korean herbal medicine Sihosogan-tang on dopaminergic neurons in the nigrostriatal pathway of a Parkinson (WCC Halls A-C) -  Nov 3, 2023 - Abstract #Neuroscience2023NEUROSCIENCE_8731;
    Male 8-week-old C57BL/6 mice were injected with vehicle or 30 mg/kg of MPTP at 24h intervals for 5 days, and orally treated SS (82 mg/kg, or 247 mg/kg) or intraperitoneally injected selegiline (2 mg/kg) once a day for 12 consecutive days from the first MPTP injection...MPTP administration caused motor dysfunction, dopaminergic neuronal death in the SN and striatum, and increased GFAP and Iba1 expressions in striatum; however, SS dose-dependently alleviated the MPTP-induced changes. These results suggest that SS suppresses MPTP-induced dopaminergic neuronal death in the nigrostriatal pathway and the activation of astrocytes and microglia in the striatum.

    Contribution of levodopa to brain iron accumulation (WCC Halls A-C) -  Nov 3, 2023 - Abstract #Neuroscience2023NEUROSCIENCE_4699;
    Supported By TL1TR002016The antiparkinson drug levodopa (L-DOPA) is the current standard of treatment for Parkinson's Disease (PD) and can be used as either a monotherapy or in combination with monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) inhibitors, such as selegiline to ameliorate dopamine depletion...The data suggests that L-DOPA affects iron transport by modifying the iron status of the ECs and mediating iron transport. The results suggest that the common antiparkinson treatment medication, L-DOPA, alters iron homeostasis that may promote neurodegeneration through iron accumulation; a novel concept requiring further study.
