    Journal:  Disseminated strongyloidiasis after prolonged treatment with corticosteroids. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 23, 2022
    Her biopsy results revealed oesophageal candidiasis and disseminated strongyloidiasis. Important historical clues in this case included previous prolonged treatment with steroids, recent diagnosis of gram-negative bacteraemia, prior residence in Rwanda, and unknown predeparture treatment for S. stercoralis She was ultimately treated with fluconazole and ivermectin with marked improvement in her symptoms.
  • ||||||||||  WHEN A PHOTO WORTHS MORE THAN A PARASITOLOGICAL CULTURE (Science Lounge) -  Jul 20, 2022 - Abstract #UEGW2022UEGW_2703;
    Clinical Case Summary: 17-years-old female, evacuated from Angola in 2020 with the diagnosis of Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) established in 2016, multi-treated with Mercaptopurine and Methotrexate...One week after treatment, the patient reported resolution of the symptoms, repeating parasitological tests between collections, which came back negative, as well as normalization of eosinophilia. Three months after therapy, she was asymptomatic and without extraintestinal manifestations.The clinical case exemplifies the complexity in the management of patients with diarrhea and the importance of considering infectious findings, even in the presence of negative cultural tests.

    DUODENAL OBSTRUCTION DUE TO STRONGYLOIDES STERCORALIS INFECTION (Science Lounge) -  Jul 20, 2022 - Abstract #UEGW2022UEGW_2633;
    Unlike previously described, the stricture was inflammatory-fibrotic putting forth the hypothesis of Crohn’s disease, hence a staging enteral-MRI was requested, pending laboratory and pathology results. This case highlights the importance of including strongyloidiasis in the differential diagnosis of GI symptoms, especially in patients from endemic areas, because diagnosis may be challenging and immunosuppression can have dire consequences.

    Journal:  Application of Moxidectin and Ultrasound-Aided Injection of Melarsomine During the American Heartworm Society Recommended Treatment Protocol in Dirofilaria immitis Infected Dogs. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 20, 2022
    The American Heartworm Society (AHS) recommends the three-dose alternate melarsomine therapeutic regimen, together with a macrocyclic lactone (ML) to reduce new infections and eliminate susceptible larvae and doxycycline against Wolbachia bacteria...Microfilaremic dogs were pretreated with prednisolone and clopidogrel for 1 week before the first moxidectin application...On the first day, dexamethasone and chloropyramine were used to avoid potential adverse effects caused by the destroyed microfilariae...From the 60th day, dalteparin was applied for 10 days to decrease the chance of pulmonary thromboembolism...All dogs recovered clinically by the 120th day and no microfilaremia was seen that time. An antigen test performed in 37/44 animals on the 271st day was also negative in all cases.

    Review:  Is Ivermectin Effective in Treating COVID-19? (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 10, 2022
    Our systematic review indicated that ivermectin may be effective for mildly to moderately ill patients. There is no clear evidence or guidelines to recommend ivermectin as a therapeutic agent for COVID-19, so physicians should use it with caution in the absence of better alternatives in the clinical setting, and self-medication is not recommended for patients.

    Biomarker, Journal:  Lymphatic filarial serum proteome profiling for identification and characterization of diagnostic biomarkers. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 7, 2022
    A combination of drugs Ivermectin, Diethylcarbamazine citrate and Albendazole is recommended by WHO to accelerate the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF)...Furthermore, the differentiation between different stages of LF cases and biomarkers identified in this study clearly demonstrates the potential of the human serum profiling approach for LF detection. To our knowledge, this is the first report of comparative human serum profiling in different categories of LF patients.
