Journal: Effect Of Intracameral Phenylephrine And Ketorolac 1.0%/0.3% On Intraoperative Pain And Opioid Use During Cataract Surgery. (Pubmed Central) - Dec 8, 2019 Sixty patients at a single center underwent femtosecond laser (FLACS) or conventional phacoemulsification under topical lidocaine gel anesthesia and intracameral preservative-free lidocaine 1%...For the composite endpoint, patients receiving phenylephrine and ketorolac 1.0%/0.3% were 94% less likely to require fentanyl or to have moderate-to-severe pain (pain VAS ≥ 4; OR, 0.06; 95% CI 0.02-0.24) than patients receiving epinephrine. Our results suggest that the routine use of intracameral phenylephrine and ketorolac 1.0%/0.3% during cataract surgery can significantly reduce patient pain as well as the need for opioids.

Clinical, Journal: The Power of Topical Anesthetics and Distraction for Peripheral Intravenous Catheter Placement in the Pediatric Perianesthesia Area. (Pubmed Central) - Nov 23, 2019 Topical analgesics and distraction are powerful tools that can make inserting a peripheral intravenous catheter easier for the patient, and also easier for a nurse with limited pediatric experience. The purpose of this article is to educate nursing staff of the importance of using topical analgesics such as LMX4 and EMLA, needle free lidocaine injections, as well as different methods of distraction to successfully place a peripheral intravenous catheter in a pediatric patient on first attempt.

Review, Journal: Emerging Roles of Long Non-coding RNAs in Chronic Neuropathic Pain. (Pubmed Central) - Nov 5, 2019 Presently, the available drug treatments (e.g., anticonvulsants acting at calcium channels, serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, opioids, topical lidocaine, etc.) for chronic neuropathic pain patients are still rare and have disappointing efficacy, which makes it difficult to relieve the patients' painful symptoms, and, at best, they only try to reduce the patients' ability to tolerate pain...In this article, we primarily review the status of chronic neuropathic pain and provide a general overview of lncRNAs, the detailed roles of lncRNAs in the nervous system and its related diseases, and the abnormal expression of lncRNAs and their potential clinical applications in chronic neuropathic pain. We hope that through the above description, readers can gain a better understanding of the emerging roles of lncRNAs in chronic neuropathic pain.

Journal: Relation of viscous lidocaine combined with propofol deep sedation during elective upper gastrointestinal endoscopy to discharge. (Pubmed Central) - Oct 29, 2019 There were no statistically significant differences between the lidocaine (n = 46) and placebo (n = 47) groups with respect to recovery time (42 ± 17.8 vs 39 ± 15.9 minutes; P = 0.23), procedure time (6.5 ± 2.7 vs 7 ± 3.6 minutes; P = 0.77), endoscopist satisfaction (83.2 ± 24.4 vs 77 ± 27.7, P = 0.23), patient discomfort (16.6 ± 19.8 vs 24.0 ± 29.7, P = 0.37), or total propofol administered (2.3 ± 1.3 vs 2.3 ± 1.0 mg/kg, P = 0.55). Compared to placebo, topical viscous lidocaine does not appear to delay recovery time or adversely affect sedation-related outcomes.

Preclinical, Journal: Sleeping through anything: The effects of unpredictable disruptions on mouse sleep, healing, and affect. (Pubmed Central) - Oct 17, 2019 All mice received a punch biopsy surgery (Day 0) with topical lidocaine gel and their analgesic treatment prior to recovery, and on Days 1 and 2...However, male mice who received analgesia slept more than their female counterparts; this may be related to sex differences in pain perception. Overall, it does not appear that the predictability of disturbance effects sleep fragmentation or stress responses, indicating that husbandry activities do not need to occur at set predictable times to improve welfare.

(Pubmed Central) - Sep 27, 2019 Fast onset of symptom relief was reported from 10 minutes after administration, lasting up to 10-12 hours. On these bases, tribenoside + lidocaine can represent a fast, effective, and safe option to treat hemorrhoids when conservative therapy is indicated, and it deserves consideration as a first-line treatment of this disease in clinical practice.

Pain perception in patients treated with intravitreal Ozurdex with different types of anesthesia in diabetic macular edema () - Sep 26, 2019 - Abstract #EURETINA2019EURETINA_738; Topical anesthesia was not inferior for pain management during intravitreal injection of the dexamethasone prolonged release device. At 24 hours after the application, it showed a lower pain index, statistically significant when it was compared with subconjunctival anesthesia, so topical anesthesia can be a safe alternative, lower cost, and with a lower rate of bleeding than application of subconjunctival anesthesia.

Subcutaneous injection of TXA was safe, reduced bleeding during dermatologic surgery, and particularly effective for patients receiving anticoagulation treatment.

Journal: Acute pain responses in dairy calves undergoing cornual nerve blocks with or without topical anesthetic. (Pubmed Central) - Sep 6, 2019 There were no treatment differences for any heart rate measures over the 5-min period after the first injection (mean heart rate, root mean square of successive differences, high-frequency power, and the ratio of low-frequency power to high-frequency power). These results suggest that cornual nerve blocks with buffered lidocaine are painful and that a lidocaine-prilocaine cream was not only ineffective in reducing this pain but that it may also worsen it.

Journal: Use of topical local anesthetics to control pain during treatment of hoof lesions in dairy cows. (Pubmed Central) - Sep 6, 2019 Algometry values showed increased pressure threshold after application of topical anesthetics. This study suggests that the use of topical local anesthesia with lidocaine and bupivacaine helps reduce pain associated with corrective trimming of severe hoof lesions, enhancing animal welfare and potentially ensuring safety of trimmers.
