    Journal:  Advancing coenzyme Q10 delivery with plant protein-based nanoparticle-mediated nanosuspensions. (Pubmed Central) -  Nov 27, 2024
    To overcome these challenges, we developed high-payload CoQ10 nanosuspensions (CQ@SPNP, CQ@RPNP, and CQ@WPNP) using plant-based protein nanoparticles (NPs) derived from soybean (SPNP), rice (RPNP), and walnut (WPNP)...The observed increases in stability and bioaccessibility were closely related to the specific NPs utilized. This study highlights the potential of plant protein-based NPs in addressing challenges of CoQ10 delivery, offering a promising approach to improve its efficacy.

    Preclinical, Journal, IO biomarker:  Neuroprotective Effects of Some Nutraceuticals against Manganese-Induced Parkinson's Disease in Rats: Possible Modulatory Effects on TLR4/NLRP3/NF-κB, GSK-3β, Nrf2/HO-1, and Apoptotic Pathways. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 24, 2022
    Seven groups of adult male Sprague Dawley rats were categorized as follows: group (I) was the control, while groups 2-7 received MnCl either alone (Group II) or in conjunction with oral doses of sesamol (Group III), thymol (Group IV), CoQ10 (Group V), WG (Group VI), or their combination (Group VII)...Notably, the combination group showed more pronounced improvements, which were confirmed by biochemical, molecular, as well as histopathological findings. Sesamol or thymol showed better protection against neuronal degeneration and some behavioral impairments induced by Mn than WG or CoQ10, partly via interplay between Nrf2/HO-1, TLR4/NLRP3/NF-κB, GSK-3β and Bax/Bcl2 pathways.

    Preclinical, Journal:  Neuroprotective effects of coenzyme Q10-loaded exosomes obtained from adipose-derived stem cells in a rat model of Alzheimer's disease. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 23, 2022
    Since the establishment of the AD model, the rats have received intraperitoneal injections of CoQ10, Exo, or CoQ10-loaded ADSCs-Exo (Exo+ CoQ10)...According to the findings of this study, Exo+ COQ10 enhanced cognition and memory deficiency in Alzheimer's disease by boosting BDNF and SOX2 levels in the hippocampus. Hence, the use of exosomes derived from adipose-derived stem cells as the carrier of CoQ10 may increase the therapeutic effect of CoQ10, which can possibly be due to the regenerative properties of the exosomes.

    Journal, IO biomarker:  Pretreatment with Coenzyme Q10 Combined with Aescin Protects against Sepsis-Induced Acute Lung Injury. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 18, 2022
    Interestingly, combined pretreatment significantly downregulated high mobility group box-1 (HMGB1) by 72.93%, and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) by -0.93-fold versus 61.92%, -0.83-fold in CoQ10 and 38.67%, -0.70-fold in AES pretreatment, respectively. Our results showed for the first time that the enhanced anti-inflammatory effect of combined CoQ10 and AES pretreatment prevented LPS-induced ALI via suppression of NLRP-3 inflammasome through regulation of HMGB1/TLR4 signaling pathway and mitochondrial stabilization.

    Journal:  The Influence of Statins on the Aerobic Metabolism of Endothelial Cells. (Pubmed Central) -  Nov 21, 2020
    No changes in mitochondrial biogenesis, cell viability, or ATP levels were observed, whereas a decrease in Coenzyme Q10 (Q10) content was accompanied by an increase in intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, although mitochondrial ROS production remained unchanged...These changes may cause the observed decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential and an increase in Q10 reduction level as a consequence, leading to elevated mitochondrial ROS formation. The above observations highlight the role of endothelial mitochondria in response to potential metabolic adaptations related to the chronic exposure of endothelial cells to statins.

    [VIRTUAL] Nutritional management to avoid metabolic decompensation at major surgeries in a patient with propionic acidemia related cardiomyopathy: A case report (E-Poster Hall) -  Aug 29, 2020 - Abstract #TTS2020TTS_888;
    To prevent metabolic decompensation triggered by surgical catabolic stress, vitamin cocktail (Vitamin B1, B2, B12, C, and Ubidecarenone), biotin, L-carnitine, and parenteral nutrition consisting of glucose and amino acid were given immediately after surgery...Although lactate slightly increased for several days after surgery, the postoperative course was uneventful.  In patients with PA related cardiomyopathy, meticulous nutritional management based on pathophysiology of PA is useful to prevent metabolic crisis at major surgery, such as LVAD implantation and HTx.

    ACUTE TOXIC LEUKOENCEPHALOPATHY DUE TO HEROIN INHALATION (Ernest N. Morial Convention Center - Exhibit Hall - Poster Area 4) -  Sep 25, 2019 - Abstract #CHEST2019CHEST_3551;
    These results demonstrate that PLG exerts therapeutic effects in a rotenone-induced PD models by restoring the balance between apoptosis and autophagy. He was started on empiric antioxidant therapy with Coenzyme Q10, vitamin E, and vitamin C. Patient's clinical course subsequently improved and he was ultimately discharged to a rehab facility.One method of heroin use is inhalation of the drug as a thick vapor after heating it in aluminum foil, which is called 'Chasing the Dragon.' This can result in a toxic leukoencephalopathy with 3 levels of severity [1, 2]...It is important for critical care clinicians to distinguish this manifestation of opiate abuse from anoxic brain injury and other causes of acute encephalopathy because treatment and prognosis may differ.

    Journal:  Aspalathin-Rich Green Rooibos Extract Lowers LDL-Cholesterol and Oxidative Status in High-Fat Diet-Induced Diabetic Vervet Monkeys. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 22, 2019
    ...No variation of plasma coenzyme Q10 (CoQ) were found, suggesting that the LDL-lowering effect of Afriplex GRT could be related to its ability to modulate the mevalonate pathway differently from statins...Finally, the direct correlation between the amount of oxidized LDL and total LDL concentration, and the inverse correlation between ox-LDL and plasma CoQ levels, detected in the diabetic monkeys highlighted the potential cardiovascular protective role of green rooibos extract. Taken together, these findings suggest that Afriplex GRT could counteract hyperglycemia, oxidative stress and dyslipidemia, thereby lowering fundamental cardiovascular risk factors associated with diabetes.
