Journal:  Clarifying the functional role of serotonin in Meloidogyne graminicola host plant parasitism by immunolocalization and RNA interference. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 26, 2024
In this study, we tested the effects of exogenous serotonin and the pharmacological compounds fluoxetine and methiothepin on the feeding behaviors of Meloidogyne graminicola...Furthermore, we investigated the impact of phytoserotonin on nematode invasion and development in rice by overexpressing OsTDC-3 or supplementing rice plants with tryptamine and found that an increase in phytoserotonin increases nematode pathogenicity. Overall, our study provides insights into the essential role of serotonin in M. graminicola host plant parasitism and proposes that the serotonergic signaling pathway could be a potential target for controlling PPNs.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors and Symptoms of Depression in Patients on Chronic Hemodialysis: A Systematic Review. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 19, 2024
In one study, citalopram and psychological interventions were both effective in reducing the symptoms of depression and anxiety and, in another study, sertraline was modestly more effective than CBT at 12 weeks in reducing the symptoms of depression...SSRI administration, at the dosage used in the studies included in the present systematic review, seems safe in most hemodialysis patients. However, the paucity of studies and the limited number of patients included in the trials may suggest that further randomized, controlled studies are needed to determine if SSRIs may be used routinely in daily clinical practice in such a population.

Preclinical, Journal:  Enhancing the action of serotonin by three different mechanisms prevents spontaneous seizure-induced mortality in Dravet mice. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 11, 2024
Our data demonstrate that elevating serotonergic function by fluoxetine, fenfluramine, or SR 57227 significantly reduces or eliminates SSIM in Dravet mice in a sex-independent manner. These findings suggest that deficits in serotonergic neurotransmission likely play an important role in the pathogenesis of SSIM, and fluoxetine and fenfluramine, which are US Food and Drug Administration-approved medications, may potentially prevent SUDEP in at-risk patients.

Preclinical, Journal:  Fluoxetine Can Cause Epileptogenesis and Aberrant Neurogenesis in Male Wild Type Mice. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 4, 2024
In conclusion, fluoxetine could induce considerable adverse effects in wild type mice, including seizure-like activity. Fluoxetine-induced neurogenesis increases could be related to this activity, therefore proneurogenic effects of fluoxetine and other antidepressants, especially in the absence of any behavioral therapeutic effects, should be interpreted with caution.

Journal:  ShuYu capsule alleviates emotional and physical symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder: Impact on ALLO decline and GABAA receptor ? subunit in the PAG area. (Pubmed Central) -  May 30, 2024
While a low dose of fluoxetine, a classic selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, is commonly used as a first-line drug to alleviate emotional disorders in PMDD in clinical settings, its mechanism of action is related to ALLO-GABAA receptor function...The observed effects of ShuYu capsules suggest a central mechanism underlying PMDD symptoms, involving ALLO_GABAA receptor function in the PAG region. This study highlights the potential of traditional Chinese medicine in addressing both emotional and physical symptoms associated with PMDD, shedding light on novel therapeutic approaches for this condition.
