In arteries pretreated with guanethidine, residual nerve-evoked constrictions were abolished by a high concentration of propranolol (10 μM) that is known to inhibit 5-HT receptors, or ketanserin (100 nM), a 5-HT receptor antagonist, but not SB207216 (1 μM), an antagonist of 5-HT and 5-HT receptors...For the first time, functional serotonergic nerves are identified in the tibial nutrient artery of the guinea pig. Thus, it appears that tibial nutrient arterial calibre is regulated by the balance between sympathetic and serotonergic vasoconstrictor nerves and vasodilator afferent nerves that release substance P-stimulating endothelial nitric oxide (NO) release.

Moreover, the results offer further insight into the JAK/STAT signaling pathway that links inflammation to TRD, which may be a useful future approach to prevent TRD.

Here, we exploit daily behavioural variation in the fish model Nothobranchius furzeri to examine if behavioural effects of chronic exposure (74 days) to an environmentally relevant level (28 ng/L) of the neurochemical fluoxetine depend on the time of day...Moreover, open-field locomotor activity was disrupted and daily patterns in activity lifted upon exposure to the compound. These results imply that short-term behavioural variability should be considered both to standardise ecological risk assessment of neuroactive chemicals as well as to better understand the environmental impact of such compounds in aquatic ecosystems.

The results from this study suggest a simple, fast, high throughput assay for A. franciscana and gains insight on the impacts of a range of psychotropic compounds on the swimming behaviours of a model crustacean species used in ecotoxicology studies.

It is also used clinically to treat depression, but the mechanism remains unknown.Objectives: To investigate the neuroprotective effect of EXD, and its antidepressant potential.Materials and ICR mice were treated with EXD (0.5, 1.5 and 4.5 g/kg i.g.) and fluoxetine (6.0 mg/kg i.g.) for 10 days...Moreover, EXD improved depression-like behaviour in mice, and 4.5 g/kg EXD treatment increased the secretion of serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine by 67.44, 28.12 and 42.12 pg/mg, respectively, in hypothalamus compared to that of reserpine group.Discussion and EXD demonstrated neuroprotective effects and improved depression-like behaviour in mice. Further research should be focussed on the mechanism of the active components in EXD.

Fluoxetine, in particular, has been the subject of multiple studies and has been associated with gonadotoxic effects, including decreased sperm concentration and motility, increased deoxyribonucleic acid fragmentation, and decreased reproductive organ weights...The data regarding serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors and atypical antidepressants are sparse, varied and conflicting. Given the widespread and often long-term use of antidepressant medications, there is a clear need for further data regarding their impact on semen quality and male fertility.
