Journal:  INU-LA-PEG-FA coated SPIONs loading doxorubicin for solid tumour chemotherapy. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 7, 2019
...For this purpose, a dual targeted redox-responsive drug delivery system, prepared by coating superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SPIONs) with the amphiphilic copolymer INU-LA-PEG-FA and loading doxorubicin (DOXO-SPIONs) was investigated as tool for solid tumor chemotherapy...Accumulation by magnetic attraction was used as synergistic targeting strategy. Improved anticancer activity was demonstrated in mice by evaluating tumor volume reduction, immunohistochemical analyses and imaging properties using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Clinical, Journal, Combination therapy:  Efficacy and safety of transarterial chemoembolization with 70- to 150-μm drug-eluting beads alone or in combination with 100- to 300-μm drug-eluting beads. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 6, 2019
To evaluate the safety and efficacy of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma, a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent TACE utilizing up to one vial of LC BeadM1 (70-150 μm) embolics with doxorubicin was performed...The median progression-free survival was 282 days. In conclusion, drug-eluting bead TACE with 70- to 150-μm embolics alone or in combination with 100- to 300-μm embolics is safe and demonstrates good disease control, particularly with small, solitary tumors.

...Direct inhibition of miR-7641 using a locked nucleic acid upregulated the expression of its target genes, sensitized cancer cells, and enhanced the efficiency of therapeutic agents such as doxorubicin...Thus, miR-7641 might be a clinically important cancer biomarker. Inhibition of miR-7641 expression could be an efficient treatment strategy for clinical patients.

Preclinical, Journal:  Flaxseed Lignans Enhance the Cytotoxicity of Chemotherapeutic Agents against Breast Cancer Cell Lines MDA-MB-231 and SKBR3. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 5, 2019
A three compound combination study found that enterolactone and metformin together in combination with relatively low concentrations of chemotherapeutic drugs were able to significantly decrease cancer cell viability, compared to low concentrations of the individual chemotherapeutic drug alone. Our in vitro evaluation suggests a future direction in improving chemotherapeutic efficacy in breast cancer by adjuvant therapy with the flaxseed lignans.

Our in vitro evaluation suggests a future direction in improving chemotherapeutic efficacy in breast cancer by adjuvant therapy with the flaxseed lignans. The diagnosis of PLS is difficult before operation due to its nonspecific manifestations, and the high survival rate can be achieved by radical resection with adjuvant chemotherapy.

Journal:  SDF-1-loaded PLGA Nanoparticles for the Targeted Photoacoustic Imaging and Photothermal Therapy of Metastatic Lymph Nodes in Tongue Squamous Cell Carcinoma. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 5, 2019
...Herein, we developed multifunctional targeted polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) loaded with indocyanine green (ICG) and doxorubicin (DOX) for the targeted photoacoustic imaging and photothermal ablation of oral cancer cells...The encapsulated drug (DOX) was released immediately after the liquid core was transformed into a gas via laser effects, which killed tumour cells while producing strong photoacoustic signals in vitro and in vivo. Thus, we concluded that the chemokine SDF-1 can be applied for the targeted chemotherapy of metastatic lymph nodes of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and is more effective for treating oral cancer when combined with photothermal therapy than when used alone.

Journal:  Investigations into the DNA-binding mode of doxorubicinone. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 5, 2019
Study of the well-known DNA-intercalating agent, doxorubicin, and its aglycone, doxorubicinone, was undertaken using a variety of spectroscopic and calorimetric techniques. It was found that, despite conservation of the planar, aromatic portion of doxorubicin, the agylcone does not intercalate; it instead likely binds to the DNA minor-groove.

Taken together, inhibition of P-gp function and disruption of the metabolism of energy and related amino acids could be the key mechanisms by which UA could reverse the MDR. The findings also indicated that UA could be a potential alternative adjuvant antitumour herbal medicine to resensitize cells with MDR to chemotherapeutic agents.

Journal:  Biodegradable phosphorylcholine-based zwitterionic polymer nanogels with smart charge-conversion ability for efficient inhibition of tumor cells. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 5, 2019
Therefore, the doxorubicin (DOX) release profile was controlled finely with a low DOX leakage under physiological conditions (7.8% in 48 h) and a rapid DOX release in 10 mM glutathione at pH 7.4 (78.9% in 48 h). Confocal laser scanning microscope and flow cytometry showed that the PMV nanogels exhibit an enhanced cellular uptake by tumor cells at pH 6.5 compared with pH 7.4, which allows for a severe cytotoxic effect of DOX-loaded PMV nanogels against tumor cells.

Journal:  Use of Antimetastatic SOD3-Mimetic Albumin as a Primer in Triple Negative Breast Cancer. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 4, 2019
These results support the hypothesis that PNA works through the inhibition of extracellular superoxide/ROS production leading to the conversion of 4T1 cells from a metastatic tumorigenic state to a cytostatic state.
