    Review, Journal:  Homophobia in the provision of sexual health care in the UK. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 14, 2024
    We consider national decisions made in the UK related to sexually transmitted infection prevention in gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM), with three specific examples-HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis, mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) vaccination, and doxycycline prophylaxis...GBMSM have been affected disproportionately by HIV, mpox, and bacterial sexually transmitted infections, and there is an ongoing unmet need for effective prevention. Denying access to public health interventions that meet these needs is unethical.

    Preclinical, Journal:  Doxycycline reduces liver and kidney injuries in a rat hemorrhagic shock model. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 9, 2024
    A person diagnosed with gonorrhea should discuss the nature of the infection, the importance of informing partners, when sexual activity can resume, and how to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections. We conclude that DOX protects the liver and kidney against injury and dysfunction in a HS model and could be a strategy to reduce organ damage associated with ischemia-and-reperfusion injury.

    Journal:  Doxycycline for transgene control disrupts gut microbiome diversity without compromising acute neuroinflammatory response. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 9, 2024
    Despite the change in microbiome composition, doxycycline treatment had minimal effect on basal transcriptional signatures of inflammation the brain or on the neuroimmune response to LPS challenge. Our findings suggest that central neuroimmune responses may be less affected by doxycycline at doses needed for transgene control than by antibiotic cocktails at doses used for experimental microbiome disruption.

    ASCL2 expression was induced in HepG2 cells using the Tet-On 3G system, which includes doxycycline...ASCL2 promoted the formation of malignant phenotypes in HepG2 cells, which may be correlated with the upregulation of the Wnt signaling pathway-, EMT-, and stemness-related genes. ASCL2 activation may therefore be involved in the progression of HB.

    Introduction to DoxyPEP: Understanding the Issues () -  Jan 2, 2024 - Abstract #CROI2024CROI_63;
    Recent trials demonstrate that doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (doxy-PEP) significantly reduces the risk of chlamydia, syphilis, and gonorrhea in cisgender men and transgender women who have sex with men...Despite its potential benefits for STI risk reduction in some populations, several potential implications of doxy-PEP in the near and longer term merit consideration. This presentation will review current evidence to frame the knowns and unknowns about doxy-PEP, highlight the range of doxy-PEP guidance and position statements, discuss the basis for concerns about antimicrobial resistance, and introduce future considerations for implementation to maximize benefit and minimize harms related to doxy-PEP use.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Vibrio species: development of EUCAST susceptibility testing methods and MIC and zone diameter distributions on which to determine clinical breakpoints. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 2, 2024
We demonstrated the validity of using standard BMD and EUCAST disc diffusion methodology for AST of five Vibrio spp., and generated suitable data to allow EUCAST to determine clinical MIC and zone diameter breakpoints for five pathogenic Vibrio spp., including both non-toxigenic and toxigenic V. cholerae.

    Journal:  Is Corynebacterium striatum an emerging prosthetic joint infection pathogen and how should it be treated? (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 25, 2023
    It is important for clinicians to be cognizant that this pathogen can have inducible high level daptomycin resistance and that daptomycin is likely not a reliable antibiotic for these infections. While vancomycin and linezolid are the traditional antibiotics to use in these infections, other antibiotics such as dalbavancin, may also have utility, but more research is needed to determine the effectiveness of this antibiotic in C. striatum infections.
