  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Myositis, rhabdomyolysis and severe hypercalcaemia in a body builder. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 24, 2020
Hypercalcaemia was possibly multifactorial - (1) calcium release following myositis, rhabdomyolysis and acute kidney injury; (2) possible primary hyperparathyroidism (a low but detectable PTH); and (3) hypervitaminosis A. He was hydrated and given pamidronate, mycophenolate and prednisolone...There may be several disparate causes for hypercalcaemia, although one usually predominates. Maintaining 'body image' even with the use of harmful drugs may be an overpowering emotion despite counselling about their dangers.

Retrospective data, Journal:  Comparing torsemide versus furosemide in patients with heart failure: A meta-analysis. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 22, 2020
However, torsemide did not provide significant benefits in reducing mortality or rehospitalization rates for HF or CVD compared with furosemide. The authors suggest switching from furosemide to torsemide in patients with HF not achieving symptomatic control with the use of furosemide despite maximizing guideline-directed medical therapy and furosemide dosing.

Review, Journal:  α-Adrenoceptors: Challenges and Opportunities-Enlightenment from the Kidney. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 21, 2020
Now α-ARs lurk on the horizon involving hypertension causality, renal denervation for hypertension, injury from falling in the elderly and prazosin's mechanism of action in anxiety states such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)...In this model system and in the setting of furosemide-induced sodium excretion, α-AR activation inhibited adenylate cyclase, suppressed cAMP formation, and caused sodium retention...Here, we describe how this finding relates to a broader understanding of the role of α-ARs in diverse disease states. Because of the capacity for qualitative and quantitative monitoring of α-AR-induced regulatory mechanisms in the kidney, we looked to the kidney and found enlightenment.

Journal:  Renal medullary tonicity regulates RNF183 expression in the collecting ducts via NFAT5. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 7, 2020
Furosemide treatment of mIMCD-3 cells did not affect mRNA expression and RNF183 promoter activities. These results indicated that RNF183 is predominantly expressed in the renal medullary collecting ducts, and that decreased renal medullary tonicity by furosemide treatment decreases RNF183 expression by NFAT5 downregulation.
