MALARIA VS A THERAPEUTIC AGENT: CAUSE OF HEMOLYTIC ANEMIA? (Convention Center Exhibit Hall: Rapid Area 2C) - Sep 11, 2022 - Abstract #CHEST2022CHEST_3698; He was initially treated with quinidine and then artemether-lumefantrine until artesunate was procured... Clinicians should practice vigilant follow-up for potential PADH and practice patient education to increase follow-up adherence.
- |||||||||| SEVERE MALARIA: A CASE REPORT OF ORAL TREATMENT IN LIEU OF PARENTERAL TREATMENT (Convention Center Exhibit Hall: Rapid Area 4D) - Sep 11, 2022 - Abstract #CHEST2022CHEST_3348;
Oral anti-malarial treatment can be a reasonable alternative to use in severe malaria when IV artesunate is not readily available. Parasite load can be monitored through thick peripheral smear every 2 days to confirm the treatment effect.

Journal: Preparation and application of a specific single-chain variable fragment against artemether. (Pubmed Central) - Sep 2, 2022 The artemether content in different drugs were determined by the developed icELISA, and the results were consistent to those determined by ultra performance liquid chromatography (UPLC). The anti-artemether scFv prepared in the current study could be a valuable genetically engineered antibody applied for artemether monitoring and specific binding mechanism studying.

Journal: Antimalarial chemoprophylaxis and treatment in the United States: Limited access and extreme price variability. (Pubmed Central) - Jul 20, 2022 To evaluate if cost and availability of antimalarials are barriers to malaria chemoprophylaxis and treatment, we surveyed retail pharmacies in Minneapolis/Saint Paul and New York City on the price and stocking of antimalarials. We demonstrated extreme price variability among pharmacies and limited availability for some recommended antimalarials.

Review, Journal: Pyronaridine-artesunate for treating uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria. (Pubmed Central) - Jun 28, 2022 • Artemether-lumefantrine...• Artesunate-amodiaquine...Pyronaridine-artesunate increases the risk of episodes of abnormally raised ALT. The observational data did not signal an excess of clinically important adverse effects.

Preclinical, Journal: In vitro and In vivo antimalarial activities of Avicennia africana P. Beauv. (Avicenniaceae) ethanolic leaf extract. (Pubmed Central) - Jun 25, 2022 The in vitro antimalarial activity was investigated against chloroquine-sensitive Plasmodium falciparum (Pf3D7 clones), MRA-102, Lot:70032033, via SYBR® Green I fluorescent assay method using positive control Artesunate (50-1.56 × 10 μg/mL)...Artemether/lumefantrine (1.14 mg/kg) and normal saline were used as positive and negative control respectively...The extract demonstrated high curative activity (p 5000 mg/kg in mice. The results demonstrated that A. africana crude extract has antimalarial activity both in vitro and in vivo supporting the traditional use of the plant to treat malaria.

SEVERE MALARIA IN A CHILD COMPLICATED BY SECONDARY HEMOPHAGOCYTIC LYMPHOHISTIOCYTOSIS () - May 19, 2022 - Abstract #ESPID2022ESPID_1374; Following stabilization, corticosteroids were progressively tapered and antiparasitic therapy was switched to oral artemether and lumefantrine, which was discontinued after one week...Severe malaria can be associated with poor outcome. Secondary HLH must be ruled out in children with poor response to anti-malaric treatment, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can prevent complications and can be life-saving.

PLASMODIUM FALCIPARUM MALARIA IN IRELAND WITHOUT RECENT TRAVEL TO MALARIA-ENDEMIC COUNTRY () - May 19, 2022 - Abstract #ESPID2022ESPID_1297; She was discharged home well , continued anti malaria treatment and for a review in 3 months. Learning Points/ The physicians should be aware of the possibility of Plasmodium falciparum infections in patients who have been in contact with travellers who recently returned from malaria-endemic area (luggage, airport, local transmission)..

Review, Journal, Combination therapy: Drug-drug Interactions of Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies in Malaria Treatment: A narrative review of the literature. (Pubmed Central) - May 12, 2022 Reduced functions in these enzymes can lead to subtherapeutic concentrations of the active metabolite dihydroartemisinin that may cause treatment failure which has been shown in some studies with cardiovascular, antibiotic, and antiparasitic drugs. Although the clinical importance remains unclear to date, clinicians should be aware of potential drug-drug interactions and monitor patients on ACT closely.

Journal: Prevalence of arps10, fd, pfmdr-2, pfcrt and pfkelch13 gene mutations in Plasmodium falciparum parasite population in Uganda. (Pubmed Central) - May 12, 2022 In Uganda, Artemether-Lumefantrine and Artesunate are recommended for uncomplicated and severe malaria respectively, but are currently threatened by parasite resistance...falciparum chloroquine resistance transporter), and arps10 (apicoplast ribosomal protein S10) genes in Plasmodium falciparum parasites prior to (2005) and after (2013) introduction of artemisinin combination therapies for malaria treatment in Uganda...There were more pfmdr-2 SNPs in P. falciparum parasites collected after introduction of Artemisinin combination therapies in malaria treatment. This is an indicator of the need for continuous surveillance to monitor emergence of molecular markers of artemisinin resistance and its potential drivers in malaria affected regions globally.
