    [VIRTUAL] Eravacycline in Bacteremia: A Case Series () -  Oct 6, 2021 - Abstract #IDWeek2021IDWeek_2138;
    ERV may be an option for bacteremia as demonstrated by clearance in four of five cases. More studies must be conducted as these reports show variable clinical outcomes.

    [VIRTUAL] ARGONAUT-IV: Susceptibility of Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiellae to Ceftibuten/VNRX-5236 () -  Oct 6, 2021 - Abstract #IDWeek2021IDWeek_1952;
    The prodrug (VNRX-7145) allows for oral administration, making it a potential option for step-down therapy. Importantly, VNRX-5236 has a broader spectrum of activity than existing oral BLIs, opening new treatment options for resistant infections as a key addition to the existing antibiotic arsenal.
  • ||||||||||  [VIRTUAL] Impact of an Antimicrobial Intake Process within a Post-acute Medical System () -  Oct 6, 2021 - Abstract #IDWeek2021IDWeek_939;
    An antibiotic intake form and process for review for five restricted antibiotics (ceftaroline, ceftazidime/avibactam, ceftolozane/tazobactam, fidaxomicin, meropenem/vaborbactam) was approved at the system ASP committee. Implementation of an antimicrobial intake process within a post-acute medical system resulted in a significant reduction in antibiotic consumption for five targeted antibiotics as well as overall antibiotic expenditure.

    Review, Journal:  Review of Ceftazidime-Avibactam for the Treatment of Infections Caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 29, 2021
    Although real-world data are limited, favourable outcomes with ceftazidime-avibactam treatment have been reported in some patients with MDR and XDR P. aeruginosa infections. Thus, ceftazidime-avibactam may have a potentially important role in the management of serious and complicated P. aeruginosa infections, including those caused by MDR and XDR strains.

    Journal:  Variability of Beta-Lactam Broth Microdilution for Pseudomonas aeruginosa. (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 24, 2021
    Piperacillin-tazobactam exhibited the highest degree of variability with 74% AA and 94%% EA. The implications of MIC variability are extensive as the MIC is essential for multiple facets of microbiology, such as the development of new compounds and susceptibility tests, dose optimization and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) targets for individual patients.

    Clinical, Journal:  Evolutionary Trajectories toward Ceftazidime-Avibactam Resistance in Klebsiella pneumoniae Clinical Isolates. (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 24, 2021
    When expressed in Escherichia coli recipient cells cloned in the high-copy number pTOPO vector, the Ω loop mutated variants showed CZA-resistant phenotype associated with susceptibility to carbapenems, while KPC variants with insertions in the 270-loop showed residual activity on carbapenems. The investigation of CZA-resistance mechanisms offered the unique opportunity to study vertical, horizontal, and oblique evolutionary trajectories of K. pneumoniae high-risk clones.

    Journal:  Ceftolozane/Tazobactam Resistance and Mechanisms in Carbapenem-Nonsusceptible Pseudomonas aeruginosa. (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 10, 2021
    This study adds on to the growing knowledge of C/T resistance, particularly mutational resistance, and will aid in the design of future β-lactams and β-lactamase inhibitors. WGS proved to be a useful tool to understand the P. aeruginosa resistome and its contribution to emerging resistance in novel antimicrobial agents.

    Journal, Adverse events, Serious adverse event:  Serious adverse events with novel beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations: a large-scale pharmacovigilance analysis. (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 9, 2021
    Among neurological AEs exhibiting significant disproportionality, encephalopathy with both antibiotics and mental status changes with ceftazidime-avibactam were retained in at least three cases after deduplication. Although rare, clinicians should monitor high-risk patients (i.e. individuals affected by haematological malignances, HIV infection, or treated with concomitant myelotoxic agents) for early unexpected occurrence of agranulocytosis with ceftolozane-tazobactam.

    Journal:  β-lactamase-mediated resistance in MDR-Pseudomonas aeruginosa from Qatar. (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 8, 2021
    aeruginosa isolates from Qatar are highly resistant to antipseudomonal β-lactams. High-risk STs are predominant in Qatar and their associated MDR phenotypes are a cause for considerable concern.

    Journal:  Experience of Ceftazidime/avibactam in a UK tertiary cardiopulmonary specialist center. (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 4, 2021
    Surveillance of CZA resistance is urgently needed in clinical settings. Our study showed that Antimicrobial stewardship interventions led to a more appropriate use of Ceftazidime/avibactam (as measured by duration of therapy), preserving it as a treatment option for MDR infections.

    Retrospective data, Journal:  Effectiveness of Ceftazidime-Avibactam versus Colistin in Treating Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae Bacteremia. (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 2, 2021
    The presented data could allow a deeper understanding of bacterial population dynamics during the treatment of recurrent PA infections and provide a reliable evaluation of the real efficacy of the antibiotic treatments against the bacterial population within the CF lung. Ceftazidime-avibactam was associated with a lower risk of 14-day mortality than colistin in patients with CRE bacteremia.
