Journal:  The spread of heat-labile enterotoxin-harboring Escherichia fergusonii in broiler chickens and pigs in Okinawa, Japan. (Pubmed Central) -  Feb 2, 2023
According to the present study, multiple chicken farms harbored E. fergusonii with similar antimicrobial resistance patterns and genetic clonality. Since the pathogenicity of LT-bearing E. fergusonii to humans and animals, such as food poisoning and sporadic diarrhea via meat, the transmission of the strains, and the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance genes are unknown, additional research is required.

Journal:  Aging and reactivity assessment of nanoscale zerovalent iron in groundwater systems. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 20, 2022
p-nitrophenol (p-NP) was used as a redox-sensitive probe, whereas nalidixic acid (NA), a typical antibiotic found in the natural environment, was used as a sorbing compound...Surface complexation modeling showed that the enhanced adsorption of NA onto secondary minerals can be attributed to the Fe(II)-NA surface complexation. This considerable change in the reductive ability and the adsorption capacity of NZVI arising from groundwater corrosion calls for greater attention to be paid in assessment studies, where NZVI is injected for long-term remediation in groundwater.

Journal:  Efficient Antibacterial Dimeric Nitro Imidazolium Type of Ionic Liquids from a Simple Synthetic Approach. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 13, 2022
All the compounds (3-6) (a-d) showed excellent antibacterial activity than the standard drugs (gentamycin, nalidixic acid, oflaxacin, ciproflaxacin, and amikacin). Molecular docking studies showed strong hydrogen bonding, polar and hydrophobic interactions between the dimeric imidazolium salts, and Escherichia coli/Pseudomonas aeruginosa/Proteus vulgaris/Staphylococcus aureus receptors.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Etiology of Acute Diarrheal Disease and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Pattern in Children Younger Than 5 Years Old in Nepal. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 13, 2022
This study documents the important role of rotavirus and norovirus in acute diarrhea in children younger than 5 years, followed by the bacteria Shigella, enterotoxigenic E. coli, Vibrio cholera, and Aeromonas. Data on the prevalence and epidemiology of enteropathogens identify potential pathogens for public health interventions, whereas pathogen antibiotic resistance pattern data may provide guidance on choice of therapy in clinical settings.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Establishing a marine monitoring programme to assess antibiotic resistance: A case study from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 6, 2022
A subset of 173 isolates was whole genome sequenced, and high carriage rates of qnrS1 (60/173) and bla (45/173) were observed, correlating with reduced susceptibility to the fluoroquinolones and third generation cephalosporins, respectively. This study is important because of the resistance patterns observed, the demonstrated utility in applying genomic-based approaches to routine microbiological monitoring, and the overall establishment of a transnational AMR surveillance framework focussed on coastal and marine environments.

Journal:  Modification of fast-slow differential agar medium for selective isolation of potential starter lactic acid bacteria from cheese. (Pubmed Central) -  Nov 29, 2022
These targeted additions provide mFSDA with a two-prong selectivity that (I) suppresses unwanted microbiota, and (II) increases the recovery efficiency of lactic streptocci adept to using milk nutrients. Specifically:•Nalidixic acid is an antibiotic that primarily inhibit Gram-negative bacteria [4].•Ascorbic acid and yeast extract stimulate the growth of lactic streptococci [5] and were added to complement skim milk in creating an environment favoring the growth of lactose-positive, casein peptides-utilizing LAB.•The pH indicator bromocresol purple enabled the chromogenic discrimination between LAB with different acid production capability.

Journal:  Molecular Detection of gyrA Mutation in Clinical Strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae. (Pubmed Central) -  Nov 24, 2022
Our findings indicated a relative increased rate of resistance against quinolones and fluoroquinolone antibiotics that raised a concern about extensive dissemination of clinical strains of nalidixic acid and ciprofloxacin resistant K. pneumonia. Point mutation of gyrA gene was responsible for the resistance in our strains however to gain more insight into the molecular characterization of quinolone-resistant isolates, other possible mechanisms of the resistance should also be investigated.

Journal:  Concerning Increase in Antimicrobial Resistance Patterns of Pathogenic Strains of Salmonella Isolated in Poultry Meat Products. (Pubmed Central) -  Nov 16, 2022
The findings in this study showed a high prevalence of multi-drug resistant (MDR) Salmonella serovars in poultry meat products and a concerning increase of resistance patterns. The continuous occurrence of more resistant strains implies that effective measures should be strictly applied in this particular food chain in order to prevent their spread and guarantee microbial safety.

Journal:  Prevalence and Antimicrobial Resistance of Campylobacter spp. Isolated from Broilers Throughout the Supply Chain in Valencia, Spain. (Pubmed Central) -  Nov 16, 2022
Both species were resistant to tetracycline (C...Additionally, 12.8% of the isolates presented multidrug resistance, with significantly higher levels detected among C. coli (30.4%) isolates compared with C. jejuni (8.8%) and all the three strains were resistant to all six antibiotics tested. Therefore, these results indicate that broilers could be a source of antimicrobial-resistant Campylobacter in humans and consequently pose a risk to public health.

Journal:  Antimicrobial and immunomodulatory effects of tannic acid supplementation in broilers infected with Salmonella Typhimurium. (Pubmed Central) -  Nov 9, 2022
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of tannic acid (TA) supplementation on growth performance, Salmonella colonization, gut barrier integrity, serum endotoxin levels, antioxidant capacity, gut health, and immune function in broilers infected with the Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium nalidixic acid resistant strain (ST)...Therefore, broilers fed TA had reduced ST colonization, increased growth performance, decreased serum endotoxin levels, enhanced gut health in the broilers, and stimulated the immune system in broilers infected with ST. Supplementation of TA (1-2 g/kg) enhanced growth performance and gut health via antimicrobial and immunostimulatory effects in broilers infected with ST.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Correlation Between Individual Child-Level Antibiotic Consumption and Antibiotic-Resistant Among Commensal Escherichia coli: Results from a Cohort of Children Aged 1-3 Years in Rural Ujjain India. (Pubmed Central) -  Nov 5, 2022
Further, mixed-effects logistic regression models were built to study correlation between child-level consumption of penicillin with the number of E.coli isolates resistant to ampicillin, consumption of cephalosporin with resistance to cefotaxime and ceftazidime, consumption of fluoroquinolones with resistance to nalidixic acid and consumption of cotrimoxazole with resistance to cotrimoxazole...The most common antibiotics used were cefixime (J01DD08;72 DDD/100patient/days) followed by ofloxacin (J01MA01;51DDD/100patient-days), cefpodoxime (J01DD13;38DDD/100patient-days) and amoxicillin (J01CA04;28DDD/100patient-days)...The consumption of cephalosporins showed weak positive correlation with the resistance to cefotaxime (Coefficient±SE=0.13 ± 0.09,p<0.001). Our findings showed no correlation between individual-level antibiotic consumption and resistance development in commensal E.coli in a rural community environment.

Journal:  A survey of antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia coli prevalence in wild mammals in Japan using antimicrobial-containing media. (Pubmed Central) -  Nov 1, 2022
Most resistant isolates exhibited resistance to multiple antimicrobials. The prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria observed in wild mammals was low; however, it is essential to elucidate the causative factors related to the low prevalence and transmission route of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria/resistance genes released from human activities to wild animals and prevent an increase in their frequency.
  • ||||||||||  Retrospective data, Review, Journal:  Prevalence of ESBL-Producing Enterobacter Species Resistant to Carbapenems in Iran: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. (Pubmed Central) -  Nov 1, 2022
However, the resistance rate to carbapenems was relatively low, and these drugs can still be considered as drugs of choice for the treatment of Enterobacter infections in Iran. Nevertheless, continuous monitoring of drug resistance along with antibiotic therapy based on the local data and evaluation of the therapeutic efficacy of new antibiotics or combination therapeutic strategies, such as ceftazidime/avibactam, meropenem/vaborbactam, plazomicin, and eravacycline, is recommended.
