  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Association of Antimicrobial Resistance in Campylobacter spp. in Broilers and Turkeys with Antimicrobial Use. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 4, 2021
An association of AMU and AMR was observed for resistance to tetracycline and erythromycin, while it was not observed for the aminoglycosides. Resistance to nalidixic acid and ciprofloxacin increased despite a decrease of fluoroquinolone use between 2014 and 2016, indicating that other factors have a strong influence on resistance to (fluoro)quinolones in Campylobacter.

Journal:  Wildlife Carnivorous Mammals As a Specific Mirror of Environmental Contamination with Multidrug-Resistant Escherichia coli Strains in Poland. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 4, 2021
Selective media with antimicrobials (tetracycline, kanamycin, chloramphenicol, and cefotaxime) were used for isolation...All strains were resistant to ampicillin and many of them also exhibited resistance to tetracycline (76.2%), sulfamethoxazole (57.1%), streptomycin and kanamycin (49.2%), chloramphenicol (30.1%), and nalidixic acid (46%)...The strains were carriers of blabla, and bla genes. Our research confirmed a high carrier rate of MDR E. coli, even more than one MDR strain in a single individual; therefore, wider monitoring in this group of animals should be considered.

Journal:  Interaction of the plasmid-encoded quinolone resistance protein QnrB19 with Salmonella Typhimurium DNA gyrase. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 26, 2021
QnrB19 was shown for the first time in vitro to have ability to grant non-classical quinolone resistance to S. Typhimurium DNA gyrase. Structural insight on quinolones in this study may contribute to investigate drugs useful for preventing the spread of plasmid carrying PMQR along with other factors associating with antimicrobial resistance in S. Typhimurium and other bacteria.

Journal:  Genetic characterization of coliform bacterial isolates from environmental water in Thailand. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 26, 2021
Results obtained in this study suggested that ARGs in coliform bacteria may have been spreading on the farm via IncFrepB plasmids. Hence, appropriate use of antimicrobials and good hygiene management on the farm are required to prevent the emergence and spread of resistant bacteria.

Clinical, Journal:  Antibiotic resistance: a comparison between inpatient and outpatient uropathogens. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 26, 2021
Uropathogen resistant rates in inpatients were higher than outpatient rates. The use of imipenem and amikacin instead of traditional first-line empirical therapy (fluoroquinolone and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim) is advised for hospitalized patients with urinary tract infections.

Journal:  Emergence of Escherichia coli harboring mcr-1 and mcr-3 gene in North West Algerian farmlands. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 24, 2021
In summary, our results show that farms are an important reservoir of colistin-resistant E.coli, added to other additional genes, such as bla. The transfer of manure from animals to soil and irrigation water might be spreading a mix of multiple resistances, posing a worrying threat to human health.

Journal:  Emerging bacterial fish pathogen Lactococcus garvieae RTCLI04, isolated from rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss): Genomic features and comparative genomics. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 22, 2021
In addition, 39 virulence-associated genes (VAGs) including hly1,-2,-3; PavA, PsaA; eno; LPxTG containing surface proteins 1, 2, 3 and 4; pgm, sod and 29 antimicrobial resistant genes (ARGs) including mefE (clindamycin), srmB (lincomycin), dfrA26 (trimethoprim), gyrB (nalidixic acid), arr-3 (rifampin), otrB (tetracycline), aac(6)-Ic (tobramycin), IrgB (penicillin), mecA (oxacillin), vanRB (vancomycin) and mfpA (fluoroquinolone) were also predicted in the genome of L. garvieae RTCLI04. Our study provides new insight into understanding the virulence mechanism, antimicrobial resistance, and development of effective therapeutic measures against L. garvieae during a disease outbreak in aquaculture.

Journal:  Genotyping and Antibiotic Resistance Traits in Campylobacter jejuni and coli From Pigs and Wild Boars in Italy. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 22, 2021
Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of six antibiotics revealed higher resistance in pigs to ciprofloxacin, nalidixic acid, streptomycin and tetracycline, compared to wild boar...Other resistance determinants were observed: (i) tet(O) gene was present among tetracycline-resistant isolates; (ii) rpsL and aph(3')-III genes conferring resistance to aminoglycosides, were identified only in streptomycin or gentamicin-resistant pig isolates; (iii) cmeA, cmeB, cmeC, cmeR genes responsible of pump efflux mechanisms, were observed in almost all the strains; (iv) OXA-61, encoding β-lactamase, was found in the half of the strains...Campylobacter infection is common also in wild boar populations in Italy, suggesting that wild boars could be a reservoir of resistant and multi-resistant Campylobacter species, which may be of public health concern. The present study adds to our knowledge on the epidemiological and ecological traits of this pathogen in domesticated and wild swine.

Journal:  HPMCP-Coated Microcapsules Containing the Ctx(Ile)-Ha Antimicrobial Peptide Reduce the Mortality Rate Caused by Resistant Salmonella Enteritidis in Laying Hens. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 3, 2021
In this study, a Ctx(Ile)-Ha antimicrobial peptide was employed, due to its previously reported great antimicrobial potential, to evaluate its application effects in laying chicks challenged with Salmonella Enteritidis, resistant to nalidixic acid and spectinomycin...However, there was moderate evidence (p = 0.07), not considered statistically significant, in the differences in laying chick weight between the control and microencapsulation treatment groups as a function of time. Therefore, the microencapsulated Ctx(Ile)-Ha antimicrobial peptide can be an interesting and promising option in the substitution of conventional antibiotics.

Review, Journal:  Photosensitizing Medications and Skin Cancer: A Comprehensive Review. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 3, 2021
    (4) The research gaps in understanding the relationship between PSMs and skin cancer outlined in this review should be prioritized because the US population is aging. Thus the number of patients prescribed PSMs is likely to continue to rise.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Antimicrobial Resistance Profiles and Macrolide Resistance Mechanisms of Campylobacter coli Isolated from Pigs and Chickens. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 3, 2021
Additionally, a low-to-moderate proportion of the isolates were resistant to florfenicol, gentamicin, clindamycin, and telithromycin...Further, we identified a considerable proportion (>90%) of erythromycin-resistant isolates carrying virulence factor genes: flaA, cadF, ceuE, and VirB. The prudent use of antimicrobials and regular microbiological investigation in food animals will be vital in limiting the public health hazards of C. coli in Korea.

Journal:  Antibiotic-induced DNA damage results in a controlled loss of pH homeostasis and genome instability. (Pubmed Central) -  May 15, 2021
Here, we show that the intracellular pH of Escherichia coli equilibrates to the environmental pH following treatment with the DNA damaging antibiotic nalidixic acid...Specifically, at environmental pH's greater than six we find that mutagenesis plays a significant role in producing antibiotic resistant mutants. At pH's less than or equal to 6 the genome appears more stable but extensive filamentation is observed, a phenomenon that has previously been linked to increased survival in the presence of macrophages.
