Journal: Prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter from wild birds of prey in Spain. (Pubmed Central) - Dec 16, 2021 Isolates displayed a remarkable resistance to nalidixic acid (69.9%), ciprofloxacin (69.9%), and tetracycline (55.6%), and a low resistance to streptomycin (6.7%). Our findings highlight the importance of birds of prey as reservoirs of Campylobacter strains and their significant role as carriers of antimicrobial resistance.

Clinical, Journal: Plasmid-Mediated Mechanism of Quinolone Resistance on E. coli Isolates from Different Clinical Samples. (Pubmed Central) - Dec 6, 2021 Levofloxacin resistance was seen in 37.5%, 75.0%, and 37.5% of the isolates carrying the qnrA, qnrB, and qnrS genes, respectively. The lowest resistance rates of qnrA, B, and S-positive E.coli strains were against gatifloxacin (0,0, and 25%, respectively).A high prevalence of qnr genes enhances the increasing resistance rate of E.coli against the quinolone antibiotic under study.

Journal: A Survey of Spontaneous Antibiotic-Resistant Mutants of the Halophilic, Thermophilic Bacterium Rhodothermus marinus. (Pubmed Central) - Nov 29, 2021 The majority of these were found to have mutations that are similar or identical to those previously found in other species, while several novel mutations were identified. This study provides potential selectable markers for genetic manipulations and demonstrates the feasibility of using R. marinus as a model system for studies of ribosome and RNA polymerase structure, function, and evolution.

Journal: Silicate surface coverage controls quinolone transport in saturated porous media. (Pubmed Central) - Nov 21, 2021 Using dynamic column experiments, we revealed the controls of Si loadings on goethite (α-FeOOH) coated sands on the transport of a widely used quinolone antibiotic, here focusing on Nalidixic Acid (NA)...Combining kinetics and surface complexation modeling, we present a new transport model to account for the stepwise polymerization of Si on goethite and NA transport. Our findings show that dissolved Si, common to natural surface waters, can play a determining role on the surface speciation and transport of antibiotics in the environment.

Journal: Characterization and antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli isolated from chicken and pork. (Pubmed Central) - Nov 18, 2021 Among the C. jejuni isolates from chickens, 25.6% of 2013 isolates were resistant to nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin, and levofloxacin, and 7% to ampicillin and minocycline, while 30.8% of the isolates were resistant to minocycline, 23.1% to nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin, and levofloxacin, and 15.4% to ampicillin in 2019...All the C. coli isolates from pork in 2019 were resistant to five antibiotics. The high frequency of AMR strains in C. coli isolates from pork suggests that appropriate use of antimicrobials is required in swine husbandry.

Clinical, Journal: Genomic Epidemiology and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Profile of Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli From Outpatients With Diarrhea in Shenzhen, China, 2015-2020. (Pubmed Central) - Nov 17, 2021 Antimicrobial resistance mutation/gene profiles of genomes were concordant with the phenotype testing results of 52 representative isolates, which revealed high resistance rate to nalidixic acid (71%), ampicillin (69%), and ampicillin/sulbactam (46%), and demonstrated that the novel L2/4 was a multidrug-resistant lineage. This study provides novel insight into the genomic epidemiology and antimicrobial susceptibility profile of ETEC infections in indigenous adults for the first time, which further improves our understanding on ETEC epidemiology and has implications for the development of vaccine and future surveillance and prevention of ETEC infections.

Clinical, Journal: Distribution and molecular characterization of ESBL, pAmpC β-lactamases, and non-β-lactam encoding genes in Enterobacteriaceae isolated from hospital wastewater in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. (Pubmed Central) - Nov 11, 2021 The frequencies of the non-β-lactam genes detected were catII [79.2% (19/24)], tetA [46.7% (14/30)], sulI and sulII [35.5% (11/31)], tetB [23.3% (7/30)], aadA [12.9% (4/31)], tetC [10% (3/30)], and tetD [3.3% (1/30)]. These results indicate that hospital wastewater is laden with potentially pathogenic MDR Enterobacteriaceae with various antibiotic resistance genes that can be spread to humans throughout the food chain, provided the wastewaters are not properly treated before eventual discharge into the environment.

Clinical, Journal: Survival of antibiotic resistant Escherichia coli in vacuumpacked keropok lekor: Food safety alert among SME keropok lekor producers. (Pubmed Central) - Oct 9, 2021 This study also revealed that the growth and survival of the 'Possible E10' and B10 E. coli strains were not significantly affected by vacuum packaging when stored at both 4°C and 28°C. Therefore, intervention programmes to alert and educate smallmedium enterprisers (SMEs) of keropok lekor producers on food safety as well as potential health risks that can be associated due to inappropriate handling procedures of such product, merits consideration.

Journal: Genomic Background Governs Opposing Responses to Nalidixic Acid upon Megaplasmid Acquisition in Pseudomonas. (Pubmed Central) - Oct 3, 2021 Here, we demonstrate another possible outcome, that phenotypic changes arising as a consequence of the same horizontal gene transfer (HGT) event are costly to some strains but may actually be beneficial in other genomic backgrounds under the right conditions. These results provide a new viewpoint for considering conditions that promote plasmid maintenance and highlight the influence of genomic and environmental contexts when considering amelioration of fitness costs after HGT events.

Journal: Endophytic actinobacteria of Hymenachne amplexicaulis from the Brazilian Pantanal wetland produce compounds with antibacterial and antitumor activities. (Pubmed Central) - Oct 1, 2021 The susceptibility profile of the isolates to the different classes of antibiotics was evaluated, with 80 % of the isolates showing resistance to the antibiotics Nalidixic Acid, Ampicillin, Chloramphenicol, Oxacillin, and Rifampicin...CMRP4860 that presented antibacterial effect against Methicilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) (MIC: 1.5 μg/mL and 13 μg/mL, respectively) and Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) (MIC: 40 μg/mL for both extracts)...Due to these results, the crude extract of isolate CMRP4860 Verrucosispora sp., which was the only one that presented cytotoxicity and reduced cell density only in tumor cells, was selected for subsequent analysis involving scale-up fermentation of the CMRP4860 resulting in 9 fractions that were tested against both bacteria and tumor cells, with particular fractions showing promise and meriting further investigation. Taken together, the results of this study not only show for the first time that the endophytic community of H. amplexicaulis actinobacteria can produce secondary metabolites that potentially possess important antibacterial and cytotoxic properties, but also reinforce the pressing need to conserve biomes such as the Brazilian Pantanal.
