    Journal:  Changes over 24 (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 4, 2023
    Findings pointed to the complex nature of ASM treatment in drug-resistant focal epilepsy patients calling for additional research to identify the optimal treatment to achieve beneficial patient outcomes. The increasing use of newer ASMs in pregnant women has been associated with overall advantages in relation to the frequency and severity of foetal malformation and with advantages in relation to freedom from epileptic seizures.
  • ||||||||||  Observational data, Journal:  The impact of a newly established specialized pediatric epilepsy center in Tanzania: An observational study. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 4, 2023
    The increasing use of newer ASMs in pregnant women has been associated with overall advantages in relation to the frequency and severity of foetal malformation and with advantages in relation to freedom from epileptic seizures. Our data depicted the epilepsy spectrum and highlighted the prognostic implications of improving the availability of ASMs such as sodium valproate and second- and third-generation ones in resource-limited countries.

    Preclinical, Journal, Reflex:  Cenobamate enhances the anticonvulsant effect of other antiseizure medications in the DBA/2 mouse model of reflex epilepsy. (Pubmed Central) -  Nov 30, 2023
    CNB, at 5 mg/kg, enhanced the antiseizure activity of ASMs, such as diazepam, clobazam, levetiracetam, perampanel, phenobarbital, topiramate, and valproate...The increase in antiseizure activity was associated with a comparable intensification in motor impairment; however, the therapeutic index of combined treatment of ASMs with CNB was more favorable than the combination with vehicle except for carbamazepine, phenytoin, and oxcarbazepine...Overall, this study shows the ability of CNB to counteract generalized reflex seizures in mice. Moreover, our data documented an evident synergistic antiseizure effect for the combination of CNB with ASMs including phenobarbital, benzodiazepines, valproate, perampanel, topiramate, and levetiracetam.

    Journal:  Application of passive sampling device for exploring the occurrence, distribution, and risk of pharmaceuticals and pesticides in surface water. (Pubmed Central) -  Nov 27, 2023
    It was found that the concentrations and ecological risks in the northern area of Yangtze River were higher than those in the southern area of Yangtze River, implying that economic development and population density were not the main contributors to the discovered pollution. The total concentration of pharmaceuticals and pesticides in Qinhuai River increased gradually with the direction of water flow, demonstrating the success of water diversion project in flushing and scouring pollutants.

    Review, Journal:  A bibliometric analysis of emerging contaminants (ECs) (2001-2021): Evolution of hotspots and research trends. (Pubmed Central) -  Nov 27, 2023
    Quantitative trend analysis revealed that antibiotics, microplastics, endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), per/poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pesticides, heavy metals, and nanoparticles are attracting increasing attention, whereas conventional pharmaceuticals, persistent organic pollutants, and materials such as benzotriazole, diclofenac, bisphenol A, carbamazepine, triclosan, and titanium dioxide exhibit a downward trend...Furthermore, analysis of research linkage and the developing stages of ECs could be possible approach to determine the evolution of hotspots in ECs study. This study provides objective and comprehensive insights into the research landscape of ECs, which may shed light on future developmental directions for researchers interested in this field.

    The proposed degradation mechanism of this photocatalyst-enhanced system revealed that sulfite adsorption on the surface of the photocatalyst played a vital role during the initial phase, and the degradation pathway of ATZ was discussed. This study provides a new synthesis strategy of a photocatalyst for sulfite activation and expands the potential uses of Bi-based photocatalysts in degrading difficult-to-remove organic pollutants.

    These patients should be screened for thymoma and other malignancies such as lymphomas. The management of IS symptoms can be challenging, but based on our review, the combination of multiple immunosuppressives such as IV steroids and plasmapheresis with anticonvulsants such as carbamazepine seems to achieve the best results.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Characterization of critical parameters using an air-liquid interface model with RPMI 2650 cells for permeability studies of small molecules. (Pubmed Central) -  Nov 18, 2023
    Elevation of the experimental concentration of carbamazepine, propranolol, and metoprolol in the donor compartment had an increasing effect on the P values, while prolonging the assay time did not have a significant influence. Based on the results reported here, RPMI 2650 cells cultured under ALI conditions offer the possibility of a standardized high-throughput screening model for small molecules and their formulations for in vitro drug permeation studies to predict and select optimal conditions for their nasal delivery.
  • ||||||||||  An Exotic Presentation: Managing Pain in a Patient with a Rare Axonal Variant of Guillain Barre Syndrome () -  Nov 16, 2023 - Abstract #AAPMR2023AAPMR_901;
    Current literature champions the use of gabapentin and carbamazepine as opposed to opioids in the management of GBS-related pain refractory to NSAIDs or Tylenol. When managing severe and intractable pain in patients with GBS, especially in patients with sensory nerve fiber involvement, utilizing a multimodal pharmacologic approach may be more efficacious than a single agent alone.

    Journal:  The effect of protocatechuic acid on neuropathic pain and possible mechanism. (Pubmed Central) -  Nov 10, 2023
    It can be said that PCA has similar effects with carbamazepine, which is used in clinical practice, and that PCA can take place as an adjuvant drug in neuropathic pain with the combination group. In addition, it is seen that the undesirable effects that drugs can cause alone can be avoided and a more effective treatment potential can be created with multiple mechanisms.

    Journal:  A case of a pathological variant of the PRRT2 gene in twins with paroxysmal kinesiogenic dyskinesia (Pubmed Central) -  Nov 9, 2023
    The administration of carbamazepine, which is the drug of choice in the treatment of this category of patients, has achieved significant control over hyperkinesis in twins. Thus, molecular genetic diagnosis helps confirm the diagnosis of paroxysmal dyskinesias, but careful analysis of the clinical picture, considering the provoking factor, remains the basis of diagnosis.

    Preclinical, Journal:  Chronic Administration of Ion Channel Blockers Impact Microglia Morphology and Function in a Murine Model of Alzheimer's Disease. (Pubmed Central) -  Nov 3, 2023
    Both Verapamil and Carbamazepine reduced the surveillance speed of microglia processes and changed microglia morphology in the cortex compared to the Control group. Due to their complex molecular machinery, microglia are potentially affected by drugs that do not target them specifically, and, as such, investigating these interactions could prove beneficial in our management of neurodegenerative pathologies.

    Brain distribution by use of MetaQuant microdialysis in rat and minipig (WCC Halls A-C) -  Nov 3, 2023 - Abstract #Neuroscience2023NEUROSCIENCE_12437;
    We determined the biodistribution of the brain penetrant anti-epileptic carbamazepine in both rats and minipigs...The comparison of the levels in the two species illustrates how this new non-rodent minipig microdialysis model can bring additional value during the preclinical research phase. Potential differences or similarities in biodistribution between these species can be used to support translation to human biodistribution and brain penetration in the clinical phase.
