Journal:  Commentary on: "Make lithium great again!" (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 24, 2020
While we could not agree more with the authors on this point, we believe that it is important also to remark the benefits of lithium in comparison to mood-stabilizing anticonvulsants (valproate, lamotrigine, and carbamazepine). We think that these compounds, along with SGA, are the ones that have relegated lithium to a second- or even third-line option for many clinicians treating patients with BD.

Journal:  The Role of Clozapine as a Mood Regulator in the Treatment of Rapid Cycling Bipolar Affective Disorder. (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 23, 2020
In this study, it was determined that clozapine was effective as a mood stabilizer in Bipolar Affective Disorder treatment. The results show that clozapine reduces the episode frequency and the duration in rapid cycling Bipolar Affective Disorder which does not respond to all conventional treatments, including lithium, valproic acid, carbamazepine and antipsychotic drugs.

Review, Journal:  Drug interactions of cola-containing drinks. (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 23, 2020
Serum concentrations of erlotinib and different azoles, including itraconazol, posaconazole, and ketoconazole, have been shown to increase when these drugs were co-administered with a CCD. As proposed and discussed here, CCDs have the potential for interactions with numerous other drugs and thus clinicians should be aware of reported and potential interactions of CCDs with various medications in order to avoid adverse reactions and achieve expected clinical response.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Review, Journal:  Clinically Significant Drug-Drug Interactions with Agents for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 21, 2020
Due to the absence of or limitations in the data, no comments for clinicians can be provided on the pharmacokinetic DDIs for clonidine, centanafadine, mazindol, molindone, AR-08, P. tenuifolia extract and the French maritime pine bark extracts...A summary table for clinicians provides our current recommendations on pharmacokinetic DDIs of ADHD agents based on our literature review and the package inserts; whenever it was possible, we provide information on serum concentrations and dose correction factors. There will be a need to periodically update these recommendations and these correction factors as new knowledge becomes available.

Preclinical, Journal:  The influence of four pharmaceuticals on Chlorellapyrenoidosa culture. (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 19, 2020
However, the algae metabolomics pathway was disturbed significantly under the action of a high concentration of DCF (>100 mg/L). The study detected the effects of four pharmaceuticals on C. pyrenoidosa and demonstrated that the usage of metabolomics analysis complemented with DCF could be an effective approach to understand the mechanism of molecular evolution in C. pyrenoidosa for microalgal biomass and bioenergy from wastewater in researches of biological resources.

Journal:  Removal of micropollutants by an electrochemically driven UV/chlorine process for decentralized water treatment. (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 18, 2020
The electrical energy per order (E) for micropollutant abatement ranged from 0.15 to 1.8 kWh/m for the E-UV/Cl process, which is generally comparable to that for the conventional UV/Cl process (0.14-2.7 kWh/m). These results suggest that by in-situ generating Cl from anodic oxidation of Cl, the E-UV/Cl process can overcome the barrier of the conventional UV/Cl process and thus provide a promising technology for micropollutant abatement in decentralized water treatment systems.

Journal:  Assessing the applicability of a new carob waste-derived powdered activated carbon to control pharmaceutical compounds in wastewater treatment. (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 18, 2020
The PhC adsorption results with ML and clarified-ML are used to calibrate the IAST-based tracer model (TRM) and predict the new PAC performance when added to AS-bioreactor vs. in post-secondary treatment, at the PhC naturally-occurring trace concentrations. The modelling projections show (i) one needs higher PAC doses than those reported in the literature, particularly in post-treatment, and (ii) the benefits of PAC dosing to the bioreactor, with only a slightly higher PAC dose being needed when compared to its post-secondary dosing and minimising the capital investment.

Journal:  Occurrence, fate, and mass balance of selected pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in an urbanized river. (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 18, 2020
Through the determination of PPCPs in the river water samples and a central composite design (CCD) methodology, the dominant elimination mechanisms of caffeine and carbamazepine from river water were photolysis and biodegradation, but that of triclosan was sorption rather than biodegradation...The results suggest that photolysis are the main process of natural attenuation for selected PPCPs in surface waters of river systems, and the transfer processes of PPCPs is mainly attributed to riverine advection. In addition, the low concentration of dissolved oxygen inhibited the degradation of PPCPs in the surface water of Shijing River.

Journal:  The antiepileptic drug carbamazepine binds to a novel pocket on the Wnt receptor Frizzled-8. (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 16, 2020
The first small molecule-bound FZD structure provides a basis for anti-FZD drug development. Furthermore, the observed CBZ mediated Wnt signalling inhibition may help to explain the phenomenon of bone loss and increased adipogenesis in some patients during long-term CBZ treatment.

Journal:  Temporal and spatial variable in-stream attenuation of selected pharmaceuticals. (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 12, 2020
This is likely due to a spatial difference in canopy shading, which is supported by significant correlations (R ≥ 0.8) of the temporally changing 'temperature' and 'solar radiation' with time-specific degradation rate constants of photosensitive compounds for consecutive hourly water parcels. In general, the presented spatially and temporally resolved approach is a suitable tool to determine the attenuation of organic micropollutants and to narrow down the interpretation of net attenuation to a few reasonable processes.

Journal, Adverse events:  Does the application of human waste as a fertilization material in agricultural production pose adverse effects on human health attributable to contaminants of emerging concern? (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 10, 2020
Among all studied CECs, diclofenac (DCL), carbamazepine, bisphenol A (BPA) and estrogenic hormones (estrone (E1), 17α-ethinyl estradiol (EE2)) were detected and quantified in vegetable samples with a concentration range from 0.114 to 13.3 ng/g fresh weight (f.w.), while BPA, E1, and EE2 were detected in soil samples with concentration ranges from 0.526 to 0.830 ng/g f.w., 0.121-0.199 ng/g f.w. and 0.118-0.333 ng/g f.w., respectively...The human health risk was estimated using the threshold of toxicological concern approach and a standard diet for two segments of the population (i.e. adult and child). The consumption of investigated vegetables contaminated with CECs poses no risk for the Serbian population.

Journal:  Combining environmental isotopes with Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) to characterise wastewater derived impacts on groundwater quality. (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 9, 2020
Stable (δH, δO, δN, δO and δC) and radioactive (H and C) isotopes were used in conjunction with three Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) - carbamazepine, simazine and sulfamethoxazole - to discriminate between multiple potential contamination sources at an Australian WWTP...The data indicate a complex set of co-mingled plumes, reflecting different inputs (in terms of both quantity and concentration) over time. Our approach provides a means to better characterise the nature and timing of wastewater derived impacts on groundwater systems, with significant global implications for site management, potentially allowing more targeted monitoring, management and remedial actions to be undertaken.

Clinical, Journal, Diagnostic Kit, Diagnostic Assay:  Perylene diimide-Cu based fluorescent nanoparticles for the detection of spermine in clinical and food samples: a step toward the development of a diagnostic kit as a POCT tool for spermine. (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 5, 2020
The sustainable development of point-of-care testing (POCT) for spermine detection is important to check for food spoilage, early diagnosis of various malignancies and diminished anticonvulsant drug carbamazepine response in chronic epilepsy...This EA-PDI∩Cu2+ complex can be used for the ultrasensitive detection of spermine as low as 86.3 nM (UV-vis) and 90 pM (fluorescence) in aqueous medium, in urine and blood serum samples (recovery 99 ± 3) and in the solid state (0.1 μg L-1), and EA-PDI shows minimal cytotoxicity to cells and can easily enter into Human Osteosarcoma MG-63 cells for bio-imaging of Cu2+ and spermine. This EA-PDI∩Cu2+ complex can be established as a cost-effective method to develop a diagnostic kit for POCT of spermine in terms of a solution-based test kit for real time detection of spermine in vapor and solution form released from fermented food samples.

Journal:  Translocation of pharmaceuticals from wastewater into beehives. (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 5, 2020
Residues of carbamazepine (an anti-epileptic drug) up to 371 ng/mL and 30 µg/g were detected in nectar and pollen sampled from zucchini flowers (Cucurbita pepo) grown in carbamazepine spiked soil (0.5-20 µg/g)...We have demonstrated a route of pharmaceutical exposure to honeybees via contaminated nectar and pollen. Given the biological potency of pharmaceuticals, accumulation of these chemicals in nectar and pollen suggest potential implications for honeybee health, with unknown ecosystem consequences.

Clinical, Journal:  Lacosamide in patients with epilepsy of cerebrovascular etiology. (Pubmed Central) -  Sep 1, 2020
    P=N/A, P3
The boy dramatically improved in both respiratory and motor function under carbamazepine therapy. These exploratory post hoc analyses suggested lacosamide was generally well tolerated and effective in patients with CVEE, with data from the initial monotherapy trial suggesting numerically better efficacy than carbamazepine-CR.

Review, Journal:  Oxcarbazepine add-on for drug-resistant focal epilepsy. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 29, 2020
In contrast, the evidence for median percentage seizure reduction and treatment withdrawal were of moderate certainty: thus, we are fairly certain of the effect estimates' reliability. Overall, we are unsure of the true efficacy of oxcarbazepine, but have concerns about its tolerability.

Review, Journal:  Treatment Updates for Neuromuscular Channelopathies. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 28, 2020
The rarity of these conditions remains a barrier for clinical studies but the example of the aggregated n-of-1 trial of mexiletine shows that innovative trial design can overcome these hurdles. Further research is required to test efficacy of drugs shown to have promising characteristics in preclinical experiments such as safinamide, riluzule and magnesium for myotonia or bumetanide for hypokalaemic periodic paralysis.

Therapeutic drug monitoring in patients receiving long-term antiepileptic therapies may help, in specific conditions, to improve safety while preserving efficacy. Such a procedure would also increase scientific information on how pharmacokinetic variations are associated with ADR occurrence, and possibly epileptological outcomes for those DDIs for which available information is suggestive of a relevant effect but is not yet sufficient to draw conclusions.

Journal:  The sorption behaviour of amine micropollutants on polyethylene microplastics - impact of aging and interactions with green seaweed. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 27, 2020
Diphenylamine (log POW (logarithmic octanol-water partition coefficient) = 3.5) showed strong sorption, carbamazepine (log POW = 2.5) showed moderate sorption, and aniline (log POW = 0.9) showed no detectable sorption behaviour...As the plastic particles withdrew enough contaminants from solution, even toxic levels of diphenylamine (c = 10-4 M) became tolerable for the algae. However, the pollutants initially sorbed on the microplastics can be released again at a later point in the ageing process, thus having delayed pollution potential.
