    Journal:  Removal of contaminants of emerging concern from secondary-effluent reverse osmosis retentates by continuous supercritical water oxidation- parametric study and conceptual design. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 29, 2022
    The continuous removal of TOC and the degradation efficiency of carbamazepine and 17β-estradiol were investigated using actual secondary municipal-effluent RO-retentate solutions...The model yielded that for the extreme case of a zero caloric-value feed-solution, the total OPEX and CAPEX would be < $6.0 ± 2.5 per m of secondary effluents, i.e., two orders of magnitude lower than the reported environmental shadow-price associated with CECs (contaminants of emerging concern). Further work is required on the continuous and efficient separation of the salt-matrix, which can lead to higher overall heat transfer coefficients and enable further reduction in capital costs.

    Journal:  Tracing water-soluble, persistent substances in the Black Sea. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 29, 2022
    With the help of the existing observational data, we estimate DT50 and concentration in the rivers for carbamazepine, sulfamethoxazole and terbuthylazine. Atrazine and simazine are believed to have accumulated in the basin for a long time due to their widespread use in the past and the slow rate of degradation in the marine environment.

    Although the declining exposure rates to teratogenic drugs with definite risk are encouraging, the rising prenatal exposure to drugs with potential risk calls for more assessments. Future research is needed to elucidate the health outcomes of fetuses exposed to potential risk drugs, understand the effectiveness of risk evaluation and mitigation strategy programs, and prioritize teratogenic drugs for advanced risk mitigation.

    Review, Journal:  The ABCB1, ABCC2 and RALBP1 polymorphisms are associated with carbamazepine response in epileptic patient: a systematic review. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 24, 2022
    The aim of this review is to compare the different results published in the literature The systematic review included thirty-nine studies (2005-2021), Meta-analyses were performed on more than twelve polymorphisms in three genes (ABCB1, ABCC2, RALBP1) involved in CBZ cell transport. The current challenges are to identify other new biomarkers of antiepileptic drugs that can only materialize with large-scale collaborative research efforts.

    Journal:  On inorganic tracers of wastewater treatment plant discharges along the Marque River (Northern France). (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 23, 2022
    In urban areas, B isotopes, Gd enrichment, Cl or carbamazepine concentrations can be used as wastewater treatment plant tracers...The use of a set of relevant tracers including alkali metals could therefore be one solution for overcoming such a problem. Finally, other indicators like Rb/B or Gd/Pt ratios may also be a way to tackle this issue; they are indeed promising to discriminate the source of wastewaters.

    Review, Journal:  Management of Post-Acute Alcohol Withdrawal: A Mixed-Studies Scoping Review. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 23, 2022
    Finally, other indicators like Rb/B or Gd/Pt ratios may also be a way to tackle this issue; they are indeed promising to discriminate the source of wastewaters. Although there is some evidence for targeted pharmacotherapy for treating specific PAWS symptoms, there are few recent, robust, placebo-controlled trials, and the level of evidence for treatment efficacy is low.

    Cavernous sinus infiltration presenting with bilateral neuromyotonia and aberrant regeneration (B8) -  Jul 18, 2022 - Abstract #EAN2022EAN_2459;
    Simultaneous bilateral NMT followed by AR is undoubtedly rare. Such co-occurrence suggests the presence of a probable shared pathomechanism (i.e., chronic compression and/or infiltration) between NM and AR, leading to abnormal excitation and maladaptation of the ocular motor nerve complex.

    Eyelid neuromyotonia in a patient with Myasthenia Gravis (B3) -  Jul 18, 2022 - Abstract #EAN2022EAN_1286;
    The coexistence of this syndrome with Myasthenia Gravis can represent a diagnostic challenge, mainly due to the need to distinguish eyelid neuromyotonia from myasthenic eyelid ptosis. We intend to highlight the importance of recognizing these subtle symptoms, as they require specific pharmacological treatment.

    Journal:  Effects of central nervous system drugs on androgen, estrogen α, glucocorticoid, and thyroid receptors. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 16, 2022
    In the hERα-HeLa-9903 cells, estrogen receptor α agonistic activities were shown for fluoxetine, paroxetine, and sertraline (at 10 μM and 25 μM), and in the GH3.TRE-Luc cells, the same three CNS drugs showed antithyroid activities (ICs, 11.6, 11.9, 2.7 μM, respectively)...Little to no effects were seen toward any of these nuclear receptors for paliperidone and risperidone...These data elucidate the potential for adverse endocrine effects for some of these CNS drugs, which should therefore contribute to informed choice when prescribing them. However, long-term exposure to therapeutic concentrations of CNS drugs that have activities on the endocrine system should be explored further also in vivo.

    Preclinical, Journal:  Bioinformatics guided rotenone adjuvant kindling in mice as a new animal model of drug-resistant epilepsy. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 15, 2022
    In conclusion, lamotrigine kindling model is more advantageous than earlier described lamotrigine and corneal kindling models which respond to drug combinations. As a result, pre-clinical drug screening through rotenone kindling may uncover broad spectrum drugs with novel antiseizure mechanisms which is a pressing issue to deal with drug-resistant epilepsy.

    Journal:  Design, Synthesis, and Evaluation of Anticonvulsant Activities of New Triazolopyrimidine Derivatives. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 12, 2022
    We found that most triazolopyrimidines showed anticonvulsive activity in the maximal electroshock (MES) and pentetrazol (PTZ)-induced seizure models...Moreover, the protection index (PI) value of 6d was significantly higher than that of the available AEDs such as valproate, carbamazepine, and diazepam...Antagonistic effects of flumazenil and 3-MP for the anticonvulsive activity of 6d and also the radioligand-binding assay confirmed the involvement of GABA receptors, at least benzodiazepine (BZD) receptor, in the anticonvulsant activity of compound 6d. The docking study of compounds 4e and 6d with GABA receptor confirmed and explained their affinity to the BZD receptors.

    Journal:  MoS boosts the Fe/PMS process for carbamazepine degradation. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 10, 2022
    The commercial MoS had good stability shown by the CBZ removal efficiency remaining almost unchanged during 8-time cycling use. Finally, a possible CBZ degradation pathway was proposed for helping understand the oxidation mechanism of the MoS/Fe/PMS process.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Characterization of Plant Accumulation of Pharmaceuticals from Soils with Their Concentration in Soil Pore Water. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 9, 2022
    Oxytetracycline and estrone demonstrated similar accumulation in radish grown in the three soils...Relatively constant root concentration factors (RCFs) on the basis of pharmaceutical concentration in soil pore water, compared to the highly variable RCFs derived from soils, suggest that pore water-based RCF is superior for describing pharmaceutical accumulation in plants grown in soils. We recommend that pharmaceuticals in soil pore water should be evaluated and included in modeling their uptake by plants.

    Preclinical, Journal:  Inhibition of autophagy with expression of NADPH oxidase subunit p22phox in preneoplastic lesions in a high-fat diet and streptozotocin-related hepatocarcinogenesis rat model. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 5, 2022
    To study the effects of autophagy inducer carbamazepine (CBZ) in a high-fat diet (HFD)/streptozotocin (STZ)-related early hepatocarcinogenesis model, we determined autophagic flux by immunohistochemical analysis of autophagy marker expression in preneoplastic liver foci and compared that with the expression of the NADPH oxidase subunit...CBZ administration could induce autophagy and impair p22phox expression, as shown by altered expression of autophagy regulators (Atg5, Atg6, Lamp1, Lamp2, and Lc3), NADPH oxidase subunits (P22phox and P67phox), and antioxidant enzymes Gpx1 and Gpx2. These results suggest that inhibition of autophagy and induction of p22phox might contribute to HFD/STZ-related early hepatocarcinogenesis in rats; however, the effects of CBZ administration on the STZ/HFD-increased preneoplastic foci were marginal in this study.

    Journal:  The wastewater micropollutant carbamazepine in insectivorous birds-an exposure estimate. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 29, 2022
    Considering body burden changes upon metamorphosis, this study fills the missing link between aquatic contamination and exposure in terrestrial habitats showing that wastewater pollutants can impact birds' life. Clearly, further analytical methods for biota analysis in both habitats are urgently required to improve risk assessment.

    Journal:  Dosing low-level ferrous iron in coagulation enhances the removal of micropollutants, chlorite and chlorate during advanced water treatment. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 28, 2022
    Reduction of ClO increased the degradation rate constant of a model micropollutant (carbamazepine) by 55.0% in the post-UV/chlorine process...Moreover, Fe(II) addition also decreased the ClO formation by 53.8% in the UV/chlorine process and its impact on the formation of chloro-organic byproducts was rather minor. The findings demonstrated a promising strategy to improve the drinking water quality and safety by adding low-level Fe(II) in coagulation in an advanced drinking water treatment train.
