    Journal:  Roles of MnO Colloids and Mn(III) during the Oxidation of Organic Contaminants by Permanganate. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 31, 2022
    This study showed that the apparent second-order rate constants (k) of Mn(VII) oxidation of methyl phenyl sulfoxide and carbamazepine remained constant with time...The kinetic models revealed that the overall contributions of MnO colloids and Mn(III) ranged within 6.6-67.9% during the autoaccelerating oxidation of phenolic contaminants by Mn(VII). These findings advance the understanding of the roles of MnO colloids and Mn(III) in the Mn(VII) oxidation process.

    Journal:  Integrating anodic sulfate activation with cathodic HO production/activation to generate the sulfate and hydroxyl radicals for the degradation of emerging organic contaminants. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 13, 2022
    In the presence of sulfates, the electrocatalysis system shows superior activities towards the degradation of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), with the optimal performance of completely degrading the representative pollutant carbamazepine (CBZ, 0.2 mg L) within 150 s...The quasi-steady-state concentrations of ·OH and SOwere estimated to be 0.51×10 M and 0.56×10 M, respectively. This study provides insight into the synergistic generation of ·OH/SO from the integrated electrochemical anode oxidation of sulfate and cathode reduction of dissolved oxygen, which indicates a potential practical approach to efficiently degrade the emerging organic water contaminants.

    Journal:  Assembled mixed co-cultures for emerging pollutant removal using native microorganisms from sewage sludge. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 12, 2022
    To evaluate the emerging-pollutant degradation rate, the best 10 co-cultures, and those which contained the social strains were then challenged with three different Pharmaceutical Active compounds (PhACs): diclofenac, carbamazepine and ketoprofen...These consortia transformed the PhACs to derivate molecules through hydroxylation and were released to the media, resulting in a low ecotoxicity effect. High-throughput screening of co-cultures provides a quick, reliable and efficient method to narrow down suitable degradation co-cultures for emerging PhAC contaminants while avoiding toxic metabolic derivatives.

  • ||||||||||  Biomarker, Journal:  Utilization of Drugs with Pharmacogenetic Dosing Recommendations in Switzerland: A Descriptive Study Using the Helsana Database. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 1, 2022
    Preemptive pharmacogenetic testing is reimbursed by health care insurance for only seven drugs (abacavir, carbamazepine, 6-mercaptopurine, azathioprine, 5-fluorouracil, capecitabine, and irinotecan) although, it is proposed to be a cost-effective approach to personalized medicine...Ibuprofen, pantoprazole, and tramadol had the highest number of users...The prevalence of PGx drug prescriptions is high in the Swiss population. Therefore, intensified preemptive testing may be a useful option as a substantial amount of the Swiss population might benefit.

    Expanding the Allelic Spectrum in atp1a3-related Disorders with 3 Novel Mutations and Clinic Features: A Case Series (Hall B, Level 3) -  Nov 29, 2022 - Abstract #AES2022AES_1732;
    Although it is not possible to generalize from only 7 patients, the results may suggest that patients with AHC might tend to present later and have milder neurological signs than patients without AHC, and that they usually show resolution of hemiplegic episodes spontaneously or after anticonvulsant treatment and in one patient persistence of AHC seem to be associated with severe neurological dysfunction. The fact that both Group 2 patients were female while the Group 1 sex distribution was approximately equal does not necessarily indicate a gender predilection.

    Practice Trends in Women with Epilepsy (Hall B, Level 3) -  Nov 29, 2022 - Abstract #AES2022AES_1220;
    Based on available data, several organizations including the AAN (American Academy of Neurology) and the AES (American Epilepsy Society) recommend avoidance of valproate use in women of child bearing age group due to substantial risk of major congenital malformations and adverse neuro-cognitive outcomes and recommend use of folic acid supplementation. However, our study finds that there is a practice gap between recommendations and clinician practice trends illustrating the need for more clinician education and need for involvement of epileptologists in the care of these patients to ensure best outcomes.
