Agreed. Some may, however I lack equipoise. Lactulose has been compared to PEG for stool acidity. Lactulose has been compared to purgatives like sorbitol for outcomes. Regardless of lactulose and/or rifaximin use, bowel movement frequency does not correlate with cognitive function. Metrics other than BM frequency need to be developed to track cognitive change and therapeutic success of HE in patients with cirrhosis.
