Clinical, Journal:  Prebiotic Food Intake May Improve Bone Resorption in Japanese Female Athletes: A Pilot Study. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 4, 2021
The aim of the present study was to clarify the influence of inulin and lactulose-fortified prebiotic food intakes on bone metabolism turnover among Japanese female athletes...These results suggest that the prebiotic food used in this study might have beneficial effects on bone health and gut microbial environment among female athletes. Further studies are warranted to identify the mechanism of the prebiotics-gut-bone axis.

Journal:  Diurnal versus Nocturnal Exercise-Impact on the Gastrointestinal Tract. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 4, 2021
Nocturnal exercise instigates greater gastrointestinal functional perturbations and symptoms compared to diurnal exercise. Although there are no circadian differences to gastrointestinal integrity and systemic perturbations in response to the same exertional stress and controlled procedures.

Journal:  Influences on catch-up growth using relative versus absolute metrics: evidence from the MAL-ED cohort study. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 1, 2021
Across six MAL-ED sites, 942 children had anthropometry data at 24 and 60 months, as well as information about socioeconomic status, maternal height, gut permeability (lactulose-mannitol z-score (LMZ)), dietary intake from 9 to 24 months, and micronutrient status...The study children demonstrated improved growth from 24 to 60 months of age, but only a subset had positive changes in HAD and WAD. The same environmental factors were associated with growth from 24 to 60 months regardless of metric used (change in HAZ or HAD, or WAZ and WAD).

Clinical, Review, Journal:  Current approach to treatment of minimal hepatic encephalopathy in patients with liver cirrhosis. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 30, 2021
Current alternatives for the management of MHE include measures to maintain nutritional status while avoiding sarcopenia, and manipulation of intestinal microbiota with non-absorbable disaccharides such as lactulose, antibiotics such as rifaximin, and administration of different probiotics. This review analyzes the results of clinical studies that evaluated the effects of different treatments for MHE.

Clinical, Journal:  Blood glucose response after oral lactulose intake in type 2 diabetic individuals. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 30, 2021
This review analyzes the results of clinical studies that evaluated the effects of different treatments for MHE. Blood glucose AUC levels in mildly constipated, non-insulin dependent subjects with T2DM are not affected by the carbohydrate impurities contained in 20 g and 30 g crystal or liquid lactulose formulations.

Journal:  Survey of Nurses' Knowledge and Practice Regarding Medication Administration using enteral Tubes. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 24, 2021
Organisations may use these results to develop their local practice pathways for prescribing, dispensing and training around administration of medications through enteral tubes. In a community setting, this paper may improve the awareness of patients, caregivers and prescribers of the possible implications of tubing blockages.

Preclinical, Journal:  Modulation of gut microbiota and intestinal metabolites by lactulose improves loperamide-induced constipation in mice. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 22, 2021
Further, the depletion of intestinal flora from loperamide- or (loperamide + lactulose)-treated mice confirmed the significance of gut microbiota in the mediation of constipation. In summary, this study leads us to propose that lactulose may improve constipation through a prebiotic effect on gut microbiota and intestinal metabolites.

Journal:  Physiological effects, mechanisms of action and application of lactulose (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 11, 2021
Perspective directions of lactulose using in combination with probiotics, other prebiotics, and as an encapsulating ingredient for vitamins and other functional nutrition ingredients are determined. In this regard, the study of lactulose interaction with the components of complex products is relevant.

Preclinical, Journal:  Evaluation of the efficacy of probiotic VSL#3 and synbiotic VSL#3 and yacon-based product in reducing oxidative stress and intestinal permeability in mice induced to colorectal carcinogenesis. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 8, 2021
These findings corroborate the reduction in intestinal permeability in the probiotic and synbiotic groups, as measured by the percentage of urinary lactulose excretion (CON: 0.93 ± 0.62% × PRO: 0.44 ± 0.05%, p = 0.048; and CON: 0.93 ± 0.62% × SYN: 0.41 ± 0.12%, p = 0.043)...We demonstrated that the use of a commercial mix of probiotic bacteria (VSL#3) isolated or associated with a yacon-based prebiotic, rich in fructooligosaccharides and inulin, is able to reduce the oxidative stress and intestinal permeability in a colorectal carcinogenesis model. These compounds have great potential to be used as a food supplement, or as ingredients in the development of food products.

Journal:  Complexions therapy and severe intoxication by Thallium salts. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 3, 2021
Group I comprised 20 patients with severe thallium salt poisoning, who were prescribed with potassium-iron hexacyanoferrate in a dose of 250 mg/kg/day per os, intravenous potassium infusions, furosemide intravenously in amount of 40 mg three times per, and hemodialysis until the thallium level in the blood dropped below 10 mg/L, lactulose 30 mL two times per day per os...The clinical picture of severe poisoning with thallium salts is characterized by lesions of the gastrointestinal tract, nervous system (central and peripheral), alopecia, heart rhythm disorders, and myocardial ischemia zones. Extension of standard therapy with potassium-iron by adding hexacyanoferrate deferasirox showed better effect on thallium elimination rate and improved functional state of liver and kidneys in patients with severe thallium salt poisoning.

    [VIRTUAL] Colonic Acetate Production in Youth with and without Obesity () -  May 29, 2021 - Abstract #ADA2021ADA_1294;
Insulin, glucose, and C-peptide levels were lower at the end of the study than at baseline in both groups (all P0.05). These data suggest that 1) obese youth either ferment lactulose to a lesser degree or experience a higher hepatic uptake of acetate; 2) acetate may cause a reduction in FFA during the fasting state that is more marked in lean youth; 3) acetate may be associated with changes in glucose metabolism, although herein, it is difficult to differentiate between the effect of acetate infusion and prolonged fasting.

Clinical, Journal:  Recurrent noncirrhotic hyperammonemia causing acute metabolic encephalopathy in a patient with a continent ileocecal pouch: a case report. (Pubmed Central) -  May 29, 2021
In addition, overproduction of ammonia from urea-producing organisms can lead to abnormal absorption into the blood and subsequent oversaturation of hepatic metabolic capacity with consequent hyperammonemic encephalopathy. Although this is a rare case, prompt identification and treatment of these metabolic abnormalities is critical to prevent severe central nervous system complications such as altered mental status, coma, and even death in patients with urinary diversions.
