Clinical, Review, Journal: Is Therapeutic Drug Monitoring of Lacosamide Needed in Patients with Seizures and Epilepsy? (Pubmed Central) - Apr 10, 2021 More evidence is currently needed on lacosamide pharmacokinetics in pregnancy and critical illness. While it is not practical to utilize TDM for all patients, TDM may be useful in patients taking enzyme-inducer AEDs, in patients with decreased renal function or on dialysis, and older adults.

Clinical, Review, Journal: The effects of lacosamide on cognitive function and psychiatric profiles in patients with epilepsy. (Pubmed Central) - Apr 10, 2021 Several factors including mechanism of co-administration of ASMs and personal history of psychiatric disorder should be considered as important in the development of cognitive and psychiatric side effects. However, the heterogeneity between studies make the quality of evidence weaker and further trials are needed.

Journal: A multimodal diagnostic approach for lateralised rhythmic delta activity in the ictal-interictal continuum. (Pubmed Central) - Apr 7, 2021 In the literature, a correlation between metabolic/perfusion imaging and ictal-interictal continuum patterns is described regarding lateralised periodic discharges but less studied for LRDA. In this case, we adopted a multimodal approach, integrating advanced imaging, EEG, clinical features, and response to therapy, to consider the overall clinical presentation as focal NCSE.

Journal: Treatment of Status Epilepticus: What Are the Guidelines and Are We Following Them? (Pubmed Central) - Apr 7, 2021 This retrospective review demonstrates how guidelines and recommendations for SE are not consistently followed. Under dosing of AEDs and aggressive weaning of anesthetic agents may result in higher morbidity and mortality.

Journal: Diagnosing Status Epilepticus (Pubmed Central) - Apr 1, 2021 Abnormal cEEG findings during status epilepticus vary from rhythmic delta activity and epileptiform and generalized periodic discharges to ictal discharges. Accurate diagnosis of status epilepticus using MRI and cEEG can offer earlier intervention, such as prompt administration of benzodiazepines, midazolam, lorazepam, ultimately resulting in a good recovery.

[VIRTUAL] A case of Delayed and Reversible Chemotherapy-Induced Leukoencephalopathy () - Mar 18, 2021 - Abstract #AAN2021AAN_969; Chemotherapy-induced leukoencephalopathy is a potentially reversible phenomenon. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of delayed leukoencephalopathy secondary to chemotherapy to be reported, with remarkable clinical and radiological resolution with steroids.

[VIRTUAL] Pediatric Phencyclidine (PCP) Intoxication: First Reported Human MRI and EEG Findings () - Mar 18, 2021 - Abstract #AAN2021AAN_904; The patient’s EEG and late MRI findings are analogous to animal models of PCP intoxication, including high voltage frontally predominant delta waves, and global volume loss. Early diffusion restriction and T2 hyperintensity in white matter seen in our patient are unique findings not previously described.

Clinical, Review, Journal: The impact of lacosamide on mood disorders in adult patients with epilepsy: A systematic review. (Pubmed Central) - Mar 17, 2021 Even though presently, a negative effect on mood seems unlikely, whether lacosamide could exert a beneficial impact on mood remains controversial. Multicenter, randomized, controlled, double-blind studies are needed to assess the impact on lacosamide on mood disorders, given the low evidence level (Class III and IV) of currently available studies.

Clinical, P4 data, Journal: Efficacy and tolerability of treatment with lacosamide in children: Postmarketing experience from the Middle East. (Pubmed Central) - Mar 13, 2021 Multicenter, randomized, controlled, double-blind studies are needed to assess the impact on lacosamide on mood disorders, given the low evidence level (Class III and IV) of currently available studies. LCM is efficacious and overall well tolerated in children with focal-onset seizures and exhibits higher efficacy with early introduction and when added to a non-sodium channel blocker.

Immunotherapy such as steroids, immunoglobulin, rituximab, or tocilizumab can be effective.

(Pubmed Central) - Mar 2, 2021 The ASMs that yielded the most data (3 or more studies) were topiramate (TPM), followed by tiagabine (TGB), brivaracetam (BRV), and lamotrigine (LTG)...Promising results, but with data from only one or two studies, were seen with cenobamate (18-59% efficacy above placebo), lacosamide (45.1-78.7%), levetiracetam (40.1-60.3%), oxcarbazepine (58.5-81.5%), and gabapentin (50-53.8%)...This review was our attempt at filling a gap in the literature and calling for universal reporting of data specific to BTC seizure reduction in all future studies, preferably including specific reporting on nocturnal BTCS. This will help enable rational ASM selection to minimize BTC seizures and thereby decrease the risk of SUDEP.

Clinical, Journal: Safety of Intravenous Push Lacosamide Compared With Intravenous Piggyback at a Tertiary Academic Medical Center. (Pubmed Central) - Feb 25, 2021 Conclusion and Relevance: IVP lacosamide was associated with a similar incidence of cardiovascular, neurological, and infusion site-related adverse events compared with IVPB, in which nearly every adverse event was deemed clinically insignificant. Lacosamide administered via IVP may be considered a safe alternative method of administration in the acute care setting.
