Preclinical, Journal:  Simultaneous determination of spinosad, temephos, and piperonyl butoxide in animal-derived foods using LC-MS/MS. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 15, 2019
The applicability of the method was evaluated via evaluating samples collected from a large wholesale market located in Seoul, and none of the samples contained any of the target analytes. In conclusion, the current approach is simple, efficient, and reliable and can successfully determine the residual levels of spinosad, temephos, and piperonyl butoxide in complex animal-derived food products.

Journal:  Evaluation of Protein Bait Manufactured From Brewery Yeast Waste for Controlling Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae). (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 5, 2019
Moreover, we found that D. suzukii has a bimodal activity pattern in visiting protein bait, where maximum activity occurs during 8:00-10:00 a.m. and 14:00-16:00 p.m. The antennae and maxillary palpi played an important role in detecting the chemicals emitted from the protein bait, as the number of intact flies that responded to new protein bait was significantly higher than the number of flies without antennae that responded, but almost 15% of defective flies still responded to the protein bait. Our results suggested that the protein bait based on spent brewery yeast could be a promising alternative for D. suzukii population monitoring and for managing this pest when combined with bioinsecticides, providing guidance for using this protein bait as a component of integrated pest management.

Biomarker, Journal:  Toxicity of the insecticides spinosad and indoxacarb to the non-target aquatic midge Chironomus riparius. (Pubmed Central) -  May 1, 2019
Additionally, changes in lactate dehydrogenase and glutathione peroxidase activities were observed for both insecticides, and evidences of oxidative damage were found for spinosad. This study contributes to the growing knowledge on sublethal effects of novel insecticides on non-target aquatic invertebrates and strengthens the usefulness of biochemical biomarkers to support the interpretation of their potentially deleterious effects on aquatic insects near agricultural fields.

Clinical, Journal:  Exposure to Insecticides Reduces Populations of Rhynchophorus palmarum in Oil Palm Plantations with Bud Rot Disease. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 25, 2019
...The effects of six neurotoxic insecticides (abamectin, carbaryl, deltamethrin, fipronil, imidacloprid and spinosad) were evaluated against SAPW for toxicity, survival, reproduction, and mortality...Mortality of SAPW populations caused by insecticides had similar effects in the laboratory and field conditions. The results suggest that carbaryl, deltamethrin, fipronil, and imidacloprid caused significantly higher mortality as compared to the control in SAPW and may be used to control its populations in oil palm trees where bud rot appears as the key disease for SAPW attraction and infestation.

Clinical, Journal:  Identification and risk assessment of spinosad resistance in a California population of Drosophila suzukii. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 19, 2019
These findings confirm that spinosad resistance is emerging in the Watsonville area and document the first known occurrence in the USA, presenting an urgent need for the development of alternative management strategies to control this pest. Additional work is needed to resolve the underlying molecular mechanism(s) that confers spinosad resistance in D. suzukii and assess the potential for this trait to spread into new populations.

Journal:  Lethal and behavioral effects of synthetic and organic insecticides on Spodoptera exigua and its predator Podisus maculiventris. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 11, 2019
Application of the spiked blood meal approach as a second separation level for sexes, after applying the Fay-Morlan glass plate method, could achieve 100% sex separation of sexes whilst allowing a reduction in the amount of toxicants required. This work provides useful information on the combination of commercial insecticides with the predator P. maculiventris to controlling S. exigua in integrated pest management (IPM) programs.

Journal, Adverse events:  Toxicity and side effects of some insecticides applied in cotton fields on Apis mellifera. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 3, 2019
...Results indicated that lambda-cyhalothrin was the most toxic-tested pesticide, recording the lowest LC and LC values at all tested periods and the lowest LT and LT at all tested concentrations, followed by abamectin, spinosad, chlorpyrifos, and emamectin benzoate...The tested pesticides significantly decreased bee foraging activities, i.e., number of foraging workers, number of worker collecting nectar, number of worker gathering pollen grains, area of broad workers, and honey bee yields. Dipel and pyridalyl were the most safety pesticides on honey bee workers in laboratory and field, so it could be introduced as a component in IPM programs of cotton pests.

Clinical, Journal:  Aedes aegypti larvae treated with spinosad produce adults with damaged midgut and reduced fecundity. (Pubmed Central) -  Mar 30, 2019
In addition, damage caused by spinosad led to a reduction in oviposition and egg viability of A. aegypti females. Finally, the exposure of mosquito larvae to sublethal concentrations of spinosad interfered with the development of the midgut, arresting the blood digestion and reproduction of adult females with blood digestion and reproduction difficulties.
