Journal:  Microbial Distribution and Antibiotic Susceptibility of Bloodstream Infections in Different Intensive Care Units. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 28, 2021
The current study demonstrated the distribution of prevalent microorganisms, and their antimicrobial susceptibility exhibited a high divergence among BSIs in different ICUs from a tertiary hospital and an outer suburban hospital in Beijing. Therefore, different antibiotic therapies for various wards and distinct age groups (especially between pediatric and elderly patients) should be considered to control the emergence and spread of highly antibiotic-resistant infections.

Journal:  Assessment of the effectiveness of early treatment in SARS-CoV-2 infection (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 28, 2021
The use of the assessed drugs should take into account the time of onset of SARS-CoV-2 infection and the severity of the disease course, including comorbidities. The presented analysis of the effectiveness of early treatment in patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 requires further clinical trials.
  • ||||||||||  Maxidex (dexamethasone eye drops, suspension) / Novartis
Clinical, Review, Journal:  A One-Week Course of Levofloxacin/Dexamethasone Eye Drops: A Review on a New Approach in Managing Patients After Cataract Surgery. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 24, 2021
In addition, this study underlines that a follow-up visit after 1 week allows for a decision about whether to stop or continue a treatment in patients still experiencing symptoms or inflammation. In conclusion, this new dose combination could represent a turning point in managing patients after cataract surgery, while mostly avoiding antibiotic resistance and improving treatment adherence.

  • ||||||||||  ceftriaxone / Generic mfg., ampicillin / Generic mfg., amoxicillin / Generic mfg.
Clinical, Journal:  Antimicrobial Resistance in Salmonella Typhi Isolated From a Referral Hospital of Kathmandu, Nepal. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 20, 2021
The antibiotic susceptibility testing for 11 different antibiotics (nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, levofloxacin, cefixime, ceftriaxone, cefotaxime, azithromycin, cotrimoxazole, chloramphenicol, and amoxicillin) was performed by disk diffusion method...It was revealed that 97.8% S. Typhi isolates were susceptible to conventional first-line antibiotics (ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and cotrimoxazole), 97.3% to cephalosporins and 95.7% to azithromycin...The trends of increasing azithromycin MIC value among S. Typhi might limit its use for the treatment of typhoid fever. Effectiveness of conventional first-line antibiotics in vitro suggests considering their clinical use after large-scale studies.

Journal:  HigB1 Toxin in Mycobacterium tuberculosis Is Upregulated During Stress and Required to Establish Infection in Guinea Pigs. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 20, 2021
qPCR studies revealed that higBA1 is upregulated in nutrient limiting conditions and upon exposure to levofloxacin...Transcriptome analysis suggested that deletion of higB1 reduced the expression of genes involved in virulence, detoxification and adaptation. The present study describes the role of higB1 toxin in M. tuberculosis physiology and highlights the importance of higBA1 locus during infection in host tissues.
  • ||||||||||  ciprofloxacin oral / Generic mfg., levofloxacin / Generic mfg., meropenem / Generic mfg.
Clinical, Journal:  Emergence of Clinical Pseudomonas aeruginosa Isolate Guangzhou-PaeC79 Carrying crpP, bla, and bla in Guangzhou of China. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 17, 2021
It contains one chromosomal DNA and one plasmid, with seven acquired antimicrobial resistance genes identified on the chromosome, including carbapenem resistance gene bla and fluoroquinolone resistance gene crpP, and carbapenem resistance gene bla located on an IncP-6-type plasmid pPAEC79 carrying a Tn3-like element. Carriage of any two of the resistance genes has never been previously reported, and simultaneous carriage of three bla and crpP may explain the bacterial phenotype as high-level resistance to imipenem and meropenem (≥16 μg/mL) and resistance to ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin.
