    IMPACT OF PNEUMOCOCCAL CONJUGATE VACCINES AND SARS-COV-2 ON ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE IN SPAIN DURING THE PERIOD 2004-2020 (E-Poster Gallery) -  Jun 7, 2022 - Abstract #ISPPD2022ISPPD_506;
    Conclusions The proportion of resistant isolates to cefditoren and cefotaxime was scarce despite the increased rates of serotypes not covered by the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. The rise of non-PCV13 serotypes associated with antibiotic resistance is worrisome, especially the increase of penicillin resistance linked to serotypes 11A and 24F.

    Pneumococcal Carriage Among Children After Long-Term Routine 10-Valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine Use in Brazil (Exhibit and Poster Hall) -  Jun 4, 2022 - Abstract #ASMMicrobe2022ASM_Microbe_3412;
    The 30 (28.6%) erythromycin-resistant isolates (MICs of 1 to >256 μg/ml to erythromycin and 2 to >256 μg/ml to azythromycin) displayed the cMLSB (76.7%) or M (23.3%) phenotypes, harboring the erm(B) and/or mef(A/E) genes...Long-term universal childhood PCV10 use has nearly eliminated PCV10 serotypes, but the high frequency of MDR isolates is a concern. Expanding PCV13 use might contribute to reduce the proportion of MDR isolates.

    Contribution Of The Predicted Toxin-Antitoxin System HigBA To Persistence, Biofilm Formation, And Virulence In Burkholderia Pseudomallei (Exhibit and Poster Hall) -  Jun 4, 2022 - Abstract #ASMMicrobe2022ASM_Microbe_2999;
    While, interestingly, the predicted toxin HipA (BPSS1584) with a triggering mechanism of growth arrest like BPSL3343 is significantly overexpressed when the mutant is treated with levofloxacin, compared with the WT strain. When the expression of the same genes was tested in other toxin mutant (∆BPSS0390), the toxin was highly repressed, suggesting a cross-talked among systems that could explain the redundancy of those gene pairs.

    Comparative In Vitro Activities of Omadacycline Against Mycoplasma Genitalium (Exhibit and Poster Hall) -  Jun 4, 2022 - Abstract #ASMMicrobe2022ASM_Microbe_2809;
    One clinical isolated detected at UAB in 2019 had elevated MICs to AZI (2), LEV (16), MOX (2), DOX (2) and TET (16), but MICs for OMC (0.125), and MIN (0.5) remained low. These data suggest that OMC may be a potential treatment alternative and warrants further investigation for MG infections that do not respond to other agents.
  • ||||||||||  The Prevalence And Antibiograms Of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (mrsa) Isolates From The Anterior Nares Of Apparently Healthy Medical Students In Dominica (Exhibit and Poster Hall) -  Jun 4, 2022 - Abstract #ASMMicrobe2022ASM_Microbe_2744;
    However, susceptibility was observed to gentamycin (92%), cotrimoxazole (sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim) (77%), levofloxacin (69%), vancomycin (65%), doxycycline (65%), and tetracycline (62%)...The MRSA prevalence rate of 88.5% observed in the nasal cavities of the medical students is alarming and highlights the need for further investigation to confirm the mechanisms of resistance due to the detection of vancomycin-resistance, and for infection control measures to prevent MRSA transmission from medical students within the community or to vulnerable patients in clinical settings. Interestingly, findings from the isolates’ antibiotic susceptibilities suggest possible treatment of potential patients infected with the nasal MRSA strains with some common antibiotics in the country’s formulary.

    The present investigation emphasizes the epidemiological significance of PFGE typing in the detection of emerging strains of highly virulent and multidrug-resistant S. Weltevreden and S. Enteritidis in non-diarrhoeic pigs that pose serious public health implications in the pork supply chain environment. More extensive longitudinal study is warranted to provide epidemiological links between environmental reservoirs and animal and human infections in piggery settings.

    Preclinical, Journal:  Enhanced antibacterial activity of levofloxacin/hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex: In vitro and in vivo evaluation. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 4, 2022
    The data revealed that the levofloxacin/HPβCD inclusion complex had an enhanced antibacterial activity compared with free levofloxacin. It implies that cyclodextrins (e.g. HPβCD) may have a beneficial role when using as a chiral selector or as a drug nanocarrier for levofloxacin and that the levofloxacin/HPβCD inclusion complex has the potential of being developed into a pharmaceutical for antibacterial therapies.

    Journal:  Fast photo-Fenton-like oxidation in bismuth catalysis: A novel Fe(III) self-doped sodium bismuthate nanosheet. (Pubmed Central) -  May 31, 2022
    Benefited from the unique layered structure of NBH, the Fe(III) as a variable valence metal ion was explored for enhancing NBH activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade levofloxacin (LVF) in the visible-light catalytic system...It was confirmed that Fe(III) embedded in the NBH via the ion exchange with Na, resulting in lattice oxygen vacancies on the surface of the NBH, after the formation of oxygen defect sites, reacts with PMS in the solution to produce active oxygen species with oxidizing efficiency. This study expands the technological application of NBH in the catalytic oxidation of variable valence metals, which are essential for the removal of fluoroquinolone antibiotics.

    Furthermore, LVX-loaded microspheres prolonged drug residence time in the lung and maintained a relatively high drug concentration for a longer time, which contributed to a reduced leakage in the systemic circulation. In conclusion, inhalable LVX-loaded microspheres might represent a plausible delivery vehicle for targeting pulmonary tuberculosis via enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of LVX while minimizing its systemic off-target side effects.

    Journal:  Spectroscopy Approach for Highly-Efficient Screening of Lectin-Ligand Interactions in Application for Mannose Receptor and Molecular Containers for Antibacterial Drugs. (Pubmed Central) -  May 30, 2022
    Promising formulations of levofloxacin and its enhancer (eugenol) in star-shaped and polymer conjugates of high capacity were obtained. UV spectroscopy demonstrated a doubling of the release time of levofloxacin into the external solution from the complexes with conjugates, and the effective action time (time of 80% release) was increased from 0.5 to 20-70 h. The synergy effect of antibacterial activity of levofloxacin and its adjuvants eugenol and apiol on Escherichia coli was demonstrated: the minimum effective concentration of the antibiotic was approximately halved.

    Analysis of Microbial Contamination in Aerosol Facemasks During Nebulized Treatment at the Microbiome Scale (Lounge and Learn 4) -  May 21, 2022 - Abstract #ASMMicrobe2022ASM_Microbe_2035;
    Antibiotic treatment with levofloxacin reduced contamination of the facemasks by oral microbiota, likely due to inhibition of oral microbiota by levofloxacin, representing the first report on the linkage between antibiotic treatment and microbial contamination of medical devices. These findings are of significance in the development of effective strategies for the prevention and mitigation of microbial contamination of aerosol facemasks by eliminating contamination from potential sources and targeted inactivation of specific pathogens.
