    Journal:  Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor-associated severe epididymo-orchitis. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 12, 2022
Initially, he had failed treatment of epididymo-orchitis with oral levofloxacin for 3 weeks, followed by 2 weeks of doxycycline therapy...Adequate wound care and regular follow-up demonstrated resolution of infection. This case highlights the risk of severe urogenital infection associated with the use of SGLT2 inhibitors in the setting of uncontrolled T2DM.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Characterization of bacterial resistance in treated hospital wastewater. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 9, 2022
For bacteria of the non-Enterobacteriaceae family, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, and cefepime presented the most effective antimicrobial action, whereas for bacteria of the Streptococcaceae family, ampicillin, vancomycin, and gentamicin were the most effective antimicrobials. Hospital wastewater treatment plants could be considered as places of selection pressure for bacterial resistance because of the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria coming from sewers or created at the treatment plant.

Journal:  Recent trends in the antibiotic resistance of Helicobacter pylori in patient with dyspepsia. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 9, 2022
However, to achieve better H pylori eradication and to prevent the spread of multidrug-resistant strains in Turkey, the molecular-based susceptibility tests should be considered routinely. Further studies are needed to determine the various mutations among resistant strains.

Journal:  Identifying patient-level risk factors associated with non-β-lactam resistance outcomes in invasive MRSA infections in the United States using chain graphs. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 9, 2022
Only levofloxacin susceptibility was associated with healthcare-associated infections...Patients with positive blood culture had significantly increased MIC of chloramphenicol, erythromycin, gentamicin, lincomycin and mupirocin, and decreased daptomycin and rifampicin MICs...The differences in resistance phenotypes between patients with previous healthcare use or positive blood cultures, or from different states, may be useful to inform first-choice antibiotics to treat clinical MRSA cases. Additionally, we demonstrated multilevel PGMs are useful to quantify and visualize interactions among multiple resistance outcomes and their explanatory variables.

Journal:  Genetic and epidemiological analysis of ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in three Japanese university hospitals. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 8, 2022
Additionally, we demonstrated multilevel PGMs are useful to quantify and visualize interactions among multiple resistance outcomes and their explanatory variables. At three geographically separated university hospitals in Japan, the epidemiology of EPKP was quite diverse, and no epidemic strains were found, whereas CTX-M-14 and CTX-M-15 were predominant.

Preclinical, Journal:  In Vitro Activity of Delafloxacin and Finafloxacin against Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma Species. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 2, 2022
Finafloxacin displayed activity similar to moxifloxacin but superior to levofloxacin against M. hominis and Ureaplasma spp. Our findings demonstrate that delafloxacin is a promising fluoroquinolone with outstanding activity against fluoroquinolone-resistant M. hominis and Ureaplasma spp.
  • ||||||||||  levofloxacin / Generic mfg., cefotaxime / Generic mfg.
Journal:  Subinhibitory Cefotaxime and Levofloxacin Concentrations Contribute to Selection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Coculture with Staphylococcus aureus. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 1, 2022
We found that the application of subinhibitory concentrations of cefotaxime and levofloxacin can select P. aeruginosa in coculture with S. aureus by modulating P. aeruginosa QS regulation to enhance the production of antistaphylococcal metabolites in different ways. This study emphasizes the role of the QS system in the interaction of P. aeruginosa with other bacterial species and provides an explanation for the persistence and enrichment of P. aeruginosa in patients after antibiotic treatment and a reference for further clinical therapy.

  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Occurrence and antibiogram of multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica isolated from dairy products in Libya. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 30, 2022
In contrast, all tested strains were sensitive to levofloxacin, doxycycline, and ciprofloxacin...This study demonstrated the applicability of molecular techniques, compared with conventional methods, as preferable for the identification of Salmonella in milk and dairy products and thus reduction of milk-borne transmission to the consumers. From the view of public health, isolation and identification of Salmonella multidrug-resistant strains from raw cow`s milk and locally prepared dairy products sold in the Libyan markets indicate the need to improve the handling and processing of milk and dairy products to minimize the prevalence of Salmonella, one of the most important foodborne microorganisms that cause food poisoning.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  OXA-244-Producing ST131 Escherichia coli From Surface and Groundwaters of Pavia Urban Area (Po Plain, Northern Italy). (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 28, 2022
One milliliter of each water sample was then screened on both MacConkey agar (MC) added with cefotaxime (1 mg/L; 2 mg/L) and MC plus meropenem (0.25 mg/L; 4 mg/L)...The 66.6, 38.0, and 19.0% of E. coli were ciprofloxacin/levofloxacin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and gentamicin resistant (EUCAST 2019 breakpoints), respectively...One XDR K. pneumoniae from a stream sample, detected as blaKPC-2 positive, resulted of ST258. The epidemiological impact of blaOXA-244 ST131 E. coli and blaKPC-2 ST258 K. pneumoniae presence in surface waters of an urban area in Northern Italy must not be underestimated.

Journal:  ROS-scavenging glyco-nanoplatform for synergistic antibacterial and wound-healing therapy of bacterial keratitis. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 25, 2022
By co-encapsulating levofloxacin (LEV) and chondroitin sulfate (CS) into the antioxidant glycopolymeric micelles, the resulting nanoplatform can achieve multiple functions of bacterial killing, ROS scavenging and promoting wound healing...aureus)-induced bacterial keratitis on a rat model showed that the drug-loaded nanoplatform could effectively cure bacterial keratitis within 5 days. Overall, this work provides an effective antibacterial and wound-healing strategy based on a ROS-scavenging polymeric nanoplatform for treating bacterial keratitis.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Antibiotic Resistance of Helicobacter pylori in Children with Gastritis and Peptic Ulcers in Mekong Delta, Vietnam. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 25, 2022
The proportions of resistance to CLR, AMX, MTZ, and LEV were extremely high, in contrast to TET, which was lower in pediatric patients. Our study suggests that the standard triple therapy with CLR should be limited as the empiric therapy for pediatric patients, and we should consider using eradication regimens with TET for children over 8 years of age if the medical facility is not qualified to perform antibiotic susceptibility tests of H. pylori in the Mekong Delta.

Journal:  Lack of Direct Correlation between Biofilm Formation and Antimicrobial Resistance in Clinical Staphylococcus epidermidis Isolates from an Italian Hospital. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 25, 2022
In addition, in growth conditions favoring PIA production, the biofilm-forming isolates showed increased sensitivity to daptomycin, clindamycin, and erythromycin, with increased tolerance to the trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole association. The lack of direct correlation between the biofilm production and increased tolerance to antibiotics in S. epidermidis isolates from a clinical setting would suggest, at least for some antimicrobials, the possible existence of a trade-off between the production of biofilm determinants and antibiotic resistance.

Journal:  PLGA Carriers for Controlled Release of Levofloxacin in Anti-Tuberculosis Therapy. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 25, 2022
The biocompatibility and bactericidal efficacy of PLGA/LFX carriers assessed both in vitro (against Mtb phagocytosed by macrophages) and in vivo (against inbred BALB/c mice aerogenically infected with Mtb) demonstrated their anti-tuberculosis activity comparable with that of the standard daily intragastric levofloxacin administration. These results make it possible to consider the developed compositions as a promising candidate for anti-tuberculosis control release formulations providing for the further evaluation of their activity against Mtb and their metabolism in vivo over long periods of tuberculosis infection.
  • ||||||||||  levofloxacin / Generic mfg., azithromycin / Generic mfg.
Journal:  In-stream sorption of azithromycin and levofloxacin in a river receiving sewage treatment plant effluent. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 24, 2022
Their in-stream loss from the entire water column (i.e., 100-MB), which was attributable to their mass transfer from the overlying water to sediment through sorption, was decreased on higher-flow days by hydrological factors. A key finding is that AZM and LVF mostly entered the river stretch in the dissolved phase of STP effluent, whereas they existed substantially in the particulate phase in the outflow river water, especially on high-flow days.
