- |||||||||| Preclinical, Journal: In vitro analysis of synergistic combination of polymyxin B with 12 other antibiotics against MDR Acinetobacter baumannii isolated from a Chinese tertiary hospital. (Pubmed Central) - Oct 30, 2022
The results suggest that, for polymyxin B-based combination therapy against MDR A. baumannii as characterized in this hospital, cefperazone-sulbactam may be the best partner, since it has the highest synergistic rate and the best synergistic effect with polymyxin B. Minocycline, imipenem, meropenem, ceftazidime, cefepime, amikacin and sulfamethoxazole also have some synergistic effects with polymyxin B, but piperacillin-tazobactam, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin and tobramycin show no synergism. None of these 12 antibiotics has an antagonistic effect when combined with polymyxin B.

Journal: Eradication of Staphylococcus aureus Biofilm Infection by Persister Drug Combination. (Pubmed Central) - Oct 29, 2022 Our study demonstrates an important treatment principle, the Yin-Yang model, for persistent infections by targeting both growing and non-growing heterogeneous bacterial populations, utilizing persister drugs for the more effective eradication of persistent and biofilm infections. Our findings have implications for the improved treatment of other persistent and biofilm infections in general.

As such, 20 (21.5%), 49 (48.4%), and 70 (74.3%) isolates were non-susceptible to penicillin, tetracycline, and cotrimoxazole, respectively...However, non-susceptibility to ceftriaxone and erythromycin was low and all isolates were fully susceptible to levofloxacin, linezolid, and vancomycin...In conclusion, non-PCV13 serotype 23B was the most prevalent, with characteristics of rapid clonal expansion of ST172 and ST15111, which are related to international clones of the pneumococcus. Continuous monitoring of NVTs in Ghana is, therefore, essential, as they have the potential to cause invasive disease, show high antibiotic resistance, and attenuate the effects of PCV vaccination.

(Pubmed Central) - Oct 28, 2022 This might lead to new compounds that are efficient against resistant strains. This idea that the compounds may act by a different mechanism of action was further supported by a brief computer investigation that demonstrated the potential lack of selectivity of the esters to the fluoroquinolone target.

For Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus Cefoxitin, Penicillin, and Co-trimoxazole were resistant out of seven antibiotics...For Enterococcus faecalis, Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin, Penicillin, Amoxicillin, Imipenem, and Vancomycin were resistant after treatment with the plant extracts, and the Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin, Imipenem, and Vancomycin zones of inhibition were from the resistant to the sensitive range...For Acinetobacter baumannii, Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin, Ceftriaxone, Ceftazidime, and Imipenem were resistant...No zone of inhibition was observed for Pseudomonas aeruginosa before or after using plant extracts against any antibiotic. This study suggests that the Achyranthes aspera seed and leaf extracts can reverse antibiotic resistance without any side effects on the human body, and that they can reverse antibiotic resistance naturally.

Whereas Gentamicin showed a moderate rate of resistance (4 isolates, 57.14%), and Amikacin resistance was found in 5 isolates, accounting for 28.57%...However, the recorded data demonstrated that there is no isolate carrying the qnrC gene. Among all pathogenic bacteria, C. koseri was the lowest causative agent of UTI in this study and was highly resistant to most antimicrobials except Imipenem, which was a good antibiotic with 100% sensitivity.

Journal: Effect of Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin, and Ofloxacin on Pseudomonas aeruginosa: A case control study with time kill curve analysis. (Pubmed Central) - Oct 22, 2022 Statistical analysis showed there were significant differences in the number of colonies p < 0.001 in the second, fourth, sixth, and eighth hour between the three isolates, p < 0.001 in the sixth and second 4 h between 1MIC and 4MIC, p = 0.012 in the second 4 h between levofloxacin and ofloxacin antibiotics. Levofloxacin has shown to have better bactericidal activity than ciprofloxacin, and ciprofloxacin has almost the same bactericidal activity as ofloxacin in vitro tests seen from the time-kill curve.

Thus, it is recommended to use such FQ derivatives considering the duration of use and target tissue.

Journal: Human health risk estimation of antibiotics transferred from wastewater and soil to crops. (Pubmed Central) - Oct 19, 2022 Risk quotient of both LEV and CIP in current study is found to be in between 0.018 and 0.557 and shows a medium risk (0.1 to 1) to human health due the discharge of untreated wastewater into the fields. However, our study reports that both antibiotics do accumulate in the edible plant parts; therefore, it poses potential risks to human health.
