Journal: Using Targeted Nano-Antibiotics to Improve Antibiotic Efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus Infections. (Pubmed Central) - Jun 28, 2023 In comparison to the free-form antibiotic, the targeted nano-antibiotic exhibited enhanced antimicrobial activity against both the planktonic and biofilm forms of S. aureus. Furthermore, our data suggested that the efficacy of a targeted nano-antibiotic treatment can be influenced by its antibiotic release profile.

Journal: Ultrasonic-assisted photocatalytic degradation of various organic contaminants using ZnO supported on a natural polymer of sporopollenin. (Pubmed Central) - Jun 23, 2023 Here, sporopollenin/zinc oxide (SP/ZnO) was used as an environmentally friendly and durable catalyst for sonophotocatalytic treatment of three organic compounds: direct blue 25 (DB 25), levofloxacin (LEV), and dimethylphtalate (DMPh)...Moreover, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses indicated that the contaminants were initially converted into cyclic compounds and then into aliphatic compounds, including carboxylic acids and animated products. Thus, this study synthesized an environmentally friendly and reusable SP/ZnO composite for the degradation of various organic pollutants using a sonophotocatalytic process.

(Pubmed Central) - Jun 23, 2023 Therapy of N. otitidiscaviarum isolate using levofloxacin (supported by a previous in vitro susceptibility testing) and doxycycline for E. canis and A. platys resulted in complete resolution of the clinical picture. Here, we report for the first time a triple coinfection by Nocardia otitidiscaviarum, A. platys, and E. canis in a dog with pleural effusion, where debilitating or immunosuppressive conditions induced by A. platys and E. canis coinfection probably contributed to the opportunistic behavior of N. otitidiscaviarum.

Journal: Role of fluoroquinolone prophylaxis in allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation in regions with a high prevalence of fluoroquinolone resistance. (Pubmed Central) - Jun 22, 2023 Allo-HCT recipients until 2016 were administered FQ prophylaxis (levofloxacin)...The no-antibiotic prophylaxis cohort had a higher proportion of malignant diagnoses (80% vs. 58%, p = 0.01), haploidentical transplants (46% vs. 14%, p = 0.004), and posttransplant cyclophosphamide exposure (46% vs. 14%, p = 0.003) than did the FQ cohort...The 1-year OS was similar between the two cohorts (66% vs. 67%, p = 0.6). This study shows that FQ prophylaxis did not affect the incidence of GNB bacteremia, parenteral antibiotic use, hospitalization duration, acute GVHD, and OS post-allo-HCT.

However, a relatively higher error rate of sequencing reads was also found. In this study, we compared Nanopore sequencing and Illumina sequencing for revealing single nucleotide variations in the 23S rRNA gene, which determines clarithromycin resistance, and we found that although there were a few false discoveries, Nanopore sequencing showed good consistency with Illumina sequencing, indicating that it is a potential tool for predicting clarithromycin resistance.

Multilevel comparative analysis revealed that ARM01 (an isolate belonging to a newly emerged K. pneumoniae ST967 lineage) was genetically similar to two isolates recovered from Qatar. ARM01 was resistant to a wide range of antibiotics, reflecting the unregulated usage of antibiotics (in most LMICs, antibiotic use is typically unregulated.) Understanding the genetic makeup of these newly emerging lineages will aid in optimizing antibiotic use for patient treatment and contribute to the worldwide efforts of pathogen and AMR surveillance and implementation of more effective infection prevention and control strategies.

(Pubmed Central) - Jun 16, 2023 Furthermore, deletion of gltS, gltP, and gltI genes in E. coli BW25113 results in decreased tolerance to antibiotics (levofloxacin and ofloxacin) and stressors (acid pH, hyperosmosis, and heat), and loss of gltS, gltP, and gltI in uropathogenic E. coli UTI89 caused attenuated adhesion and invasion in human bladder epithelial cells and markedly reduced survival in mice. The results showed the important roles of the glutamate transporter genes gltI, gltP, and gltS in E. coli tolerance to antibiotics (levofloxacin and ofloxacin) and stressors (acid pH, hyperosmosis, and heat) in vitro and in pathogenicity in mouse urinary tracts and human bladder epithelial cells, as shown by reduced survival and colonization, which improves our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of bacterial tolerance and pathogenicity.
