Shotgun Sequencing of Multi-Site Oral and Colonic Microbiota in Patients with AML: Site-Specific Patterns and Microbiota Decompartmentalization (SDCC - Halls G-H) - Nov 3, 2023 - Abstract #ASH2023ASH_2717; The 3 most frequently used antibacterial antibiotics were cefepime (n=14), IV vancomycin (n=12), and levofloxacin (n=11)...Future mechanistic studies of plaque biofilms may reveal community-protective mechanisms that sustain oral plaque microbial diversity and contribute oral flora to the gut. Mitigating gut dysbiosis in AML patients by manipulating plaque biofilms could be a novel approach to improve patient outcomes.

Although Pasteurella multocida pneumonia is not commonly observed, the presence of underlying bronchiectasis in this patient facilitated the establishment of the bacteria. In order not to miss the diagnosis of pneumonia due to P.multocida, microbiological evaluation and molecular typing should be performed in the samples taken from the respiratory tract in patients with chronic respiratory diseases such as bronchiectasis.
- |||||||||| Journal: The Change in Antimicrobial Resistance During the COVID-19 Pandemic in T (Pubmed Central) - Oct 31, 2023
While cefotaxime and ceftazidime susceptibility rates in E.coli strains increased during the pandemic period compared to previous period (p= 0.04, p= 0.001, respectively); nitrofurantoin sensitivity (p= 0.02) and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) ratios (p< 0.001) were found to be decreased...It was observed that the susceptibility to ciprofloxacin (p= 0.0001), levofloxacin (p= 0.003), and gentamicin (p= 0.005) in S.aureus strains increased during the pandemic period...The decrease in the susceptibility rate of K.pneumoniae isolates to antibiotics and the increase in the ESBL rate may be due to inappropriate and excessive use of antibiotics during the pandemic period. However, we believe that these data should be supported by studies to be conducted nowadays when all the rules and measures are back as if the pandemic has ended.
- |||||||||| Journal: Phenotypic and genomic characterization of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates recovered from catheter-associated urinary tract infections in an Egyptian hospital. (Pubmed Central) - Oct 30, 2023
Genotypic analysis of resistance determinants predicted all isolates to encode a range of AMR genes, including those conferring resistance to aminoglycosides, ?-lactamases, fluoroquinolones, fosfomycin, sulfonamides, tetracyclines and chloramphenicol...All isolates were able to form biofilms and were predicted to encode virulence genes associated with adherence, antimicrobial activity, anti-phagocytosis, phospholipase enzymes, iron uptake, proteases, secretion systems and toxins. The present study shows how phenotypic analysis alongside genomic analysis may help us understand the AMR and virulence profiles of P. aeruginosa contributing to CAUTIs in Egypt.

Observational data, Journal: Nephroprotective effect of vitamin D Against Levofloxacin-induced renal injury: an observational study. (Pubmed Central) - Oct 30, 2023 Urea, creatinine, and malondialdehyde levels were significantly (p<0.05) higher in rats administered LFX 50mg and 100mg compared to rats given (LFX + vitamin D). The main findings of this study show that vitamin D reduces renal dysfunction, suggesting that vitamin D has antioxidant properties and may be used to prevent renal injury.

The correlation of the mean size of levofloxacin hydrochloride and malonic acid particles precipitated using the SAS method with the viscosity of the used CO-solvent mixtures is shown...Therefore, crystallization occurs at large fractions of the solvent, and as a consequence at a lower supersaturation. This causes the formation of larger particles when using more viscous solvents in SAS.

isolates recovered from pediatric patients were able to invade HeLa cells, but the total number and average size of plaques were different between the isolates. The higher invasion ability of S. flexneri isolates in HeLa cells compared to S. sonnei isolates was attributed to the presence of particular virulence genes; however, the role of each of these virulence factors remains to be determined.
