In-vitro NaBut treatment did not prevent morphine-induced excitability, suggesting an indirect role of butyrate in modulating neuronal hypersensitivity. These data taken together suggest that gut derived mediators affect opioid and chemotherapeutic-induced neuronal hypersensitivity that is prevented by the SCFA butyrate.
