When noxious stimulus intensity was reduced by decreasing the lactic acid concentration to 0.18%, morphine was effective at blocking pain-related depression of behavior. In summary, the data from the present study support consideration of the Nestlet shredding procedure for use in studies examining mechanisms, expression, and treatment of pain-related functional impairment.

Further discussion is required as to whether novel treatments, such as honey, should be initiated in ED.

Standardly, crises are treated with intravenous morphine but recently, The Emergency Department of Brugmann Hospital university has implemented a new approach to relieve the crises more rapidly with Sufentanil given by the intranasal route...Overall, baseline satisfaction was average (3.8/5), but the subgroup that received the 1 mcg/kg dose had a better satisfaction score than the group that received 0,5 mcg/kg. We hope to extend this trial in other Belgian hospitals to improve the medical care of sickle cell patients and to be able to ease the pain of vaso-occlusion crises.

The authors conclude that epidural anesthesia in abdominal surgery has become less preferred, and is limited to patients and types of surgery known to be accompanied with difficult pain management. This requires the use of other methods for analgesia, such as intravenous ketamine, peripheral nerve blocks, continuous wound infiltration, intrathecal morphine, and intravenous, and non-invasive PCA.
