    Journal:  Effect of intravenous acetaminophen versus fentanyl on postoperative pain after transurethral lithotripsy (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 30, 2019
    Well-designed high-quality RCTs with standard protocol studying the effects of intra-articular opioids and NSAIDS after TMJ arthrocentesis would provide stronger evidence on its use. This trial indicated that intravenous acetaminophen is as effective as intravenous fentanyl in pain relief after urologic surgeries (transurethral lithotripsy).

    Journal:  Effect of Local Ropivacaine on Hemodynamic Responses in Craniotomy Patients. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 28, 2019
    The intraoperative perfusion index change ratios do not correlate with acute postoperative pain following laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery. Local anesthetic of 0.05% ropivacaine scalp infiltration is effective in clinical usage of regional anesthesia for producing good quality anesthesia, it seems to be a significant choice for management of optimal hemodynamic profile, providing a better hemodynamic stability during craniotomy.

    019 - What You Need to Know About Treating Patients with PTSD and Substance Use Disorder  (Location: 20A) -  Aug 28, 2019 - Abstract #USPSYCH2019PSYCH_32;
    This session will discuss the epidemiological aspects of opioid overdose epidemic and outline effective pharmacologic and behavioral treatments for opioid use disorder and opioid overdoses. Expert faculty will also discuss improving access to treatment and recovery services and strengthening public health surveillance.

    Review, Journal:  Evidence of Modeling Impact in Development of Policies for Controlling the Opioid Epidemic and Improving Public Health: A Scoping Review. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 27, 2019
    While most studies examined the role of prescription opioids and trafficking on this epidemic, the transition of patients from prescription opioid use to nonprescription use including heroin and synthetic opioids such as fentanyl impacts the system significantly and results in an epidemic with quite different characteristics than what it had a decade ago. We recommend including the impact of age and geographic location on the opioid epidemic using modeling methods.

    Early Prediction of Extubation Failure in Severe Pneumonia: A Retrospective Cohort Study (TP-02) -  Aug 26, 2019 - Abstract #ERS2019ERS_2424;
    APACHE II score of 17.5, blood glucose of 9.87mmol/L, and fentanyl average usage of 1.135mg/d resulted in a sensitivity of 62.79%, 41.86% and 37.21%, and a specificity of 69.51%, 71.95% and 85.37%, respectively, in identifying severe pneumonia patients with high risk of extubation failure. Conclusions In patients with severe pneumonia, APACHE II score > 17.5, blood glucose > 9.87mmol/L, fentanyl usage > 1.135mg/d, and the need for RBC transfusion might potentially discriminate the patients with high risk of extubation failure.

    Impact of nebulized fentanyl on exertional dyspnea in interstitial lung disease (6A) -  Aug 26, 2019 - Abstract #ERS2019ERS_1823;
    Conclusions : In ILD exertional dyspnea increases in tandem with IND as IRV decreases. Nebulized fentanyl had no effect on dyspnea, IND, dynamic respiratory mechanics or their inter-relationships during exercise.

    Effects of a neuromuscular blocking agent on chest wall mechanics in rats (TP-09) -  Aug 26, 2019 - Abstract #ERS2019ERS_839;
    Data were collected during iv infusion of fentanyl (3 μg/kg/min) and after iv bolus of pipecuronium (0.2 mg/kg)...Further experiments using this suitable experimental model are needed to assess distinct changes in chest-wall mechanics following administrations of opioids and NMBAs. Journal:  Opioid Prescription Use in Nursing Home Residents with Advanced Dementia. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 23, 2019
    However, in this population, despite the relatively prevalent use of strong prescription opioids, pain was still prevalent. This emphasizes the challenge of proper pain treatment and need for regular evaluation of pain and pain management.

    Journal:  Molecular dynamics of fentanyl bound to μ-opioid receptor. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 22, 2019
    Principal component analysis reveals differences in the trajectories dependent on the ligand bound. The differences found could be linked to ligand-dependent efficacy with respect to receptor intracellular signaling events.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Consumption trend and prescription pattern of opioid analgesics in China from 2006 to 2015. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 22, 2019
    Consumption of oxycodone had a tendency to increase, whereas pethidine tended to decrease. Consumption of opioids has shown an increasing tendency and in the meantime the prescription pattern has changed, indicating the progress of pain relief in China, though it remained far lower than the average global level.

    Impact of Polysubstance Use on Markers of Cardiovascular Disease in Homeless and Unstably Housed Women (Zone 3, Science and Technology Hall) -  Aug 21, 2019 - Abstract #AHA2019AHA_5873;
    Polysubstance use was associated with elevated markers of cardiac injury, dysfunction, and fibrosis in homeless and unstably housed women, suggesting that the use of these substances may act as a chronic cardiac insult. Consideration of polysubstance use as an additional risk factor for CVD, and the role of drug use in risk stratification merit additional investigation.
