Preclinical, Journal:  Blockade of Inflammatory Markers Attenuates Cardiac Remodeling and Fibrosis in Rats with Supravalvular Aortic Stenosis. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 23, 2023
In conclusion, both DEX and ramipril decreased cardiac inflammatory markers, which probably contributed to the reduced cardiac fibrosis and relative wall thickness; however, treated AS rats did not show any improvement in cardiac function. Despite the complex pharmacological treatment of heart failure, treatment with an anti-inflammatory could delay the patient's poor prognosis.

Journal:  Bilosomes and Biloparticles for the Delivery of Lipophilic Drugs: A Preliminary Study. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 23, 2023
Both in gastric and intestinal fluid, budesonide was released from bilosystems more slowly than the reference solution, while biloparticles showed a significant improvement in the passage of budesonide into aqueous solution. Immunofluorescence experiments indicated that ursodeoxycholic acid bilosomes containing budesonide are effective in reducing the inflammatory response induced by glucose oxidase stimuli and counteract ox-inflammatory damage within intestinal cells.

Preclinical, Journal:  The Expression of Semaphorin3E in Vagal Ganglion and Lung Tissue Is Related to Airway Hyperresponsiveness in Murine Asthma Model. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 23, 2023
The similar higher frequency of coughs and airway eosinophilic inflammation could be seen in AS and EB groups compared with nasal saline (NS) and dexamethasone (DXM) groups...Sema3E-treated asthma mice displayed ameliorated airway hyperresponsiveness, mucus production, and collagen deposition. Sema3E in lungs and vagal ganglia is related to eosinophilic inflammation and has a protective effect on OVA-induced AHR in asthma.

Journal:  Increased intracranial pressure in acute bacterial meningitis. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 22, 2023
The ICP increase may have a rapid course and death due to herniation is most often seen within the first week. Evidence regarding treatment of increased ICP in ABM is limited; this review summarises observational studies which point towards reduced mortality by applying a structured approach towards normalization of ICP in ABM.

Review, Journal:  The Role of Adjuvant Systemic and Intravitreal Corticosteroids in Fungal Endophthalmitis Treatment. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 22, 2023
In vivo studies analysis was compromised entirely of retrospective studies describing steroid use in fungal endophthalmitis, with the outcomes of the patients in these studies varying greatly and often being anecdotally noted, thus difficult to discern any definitive results. Given the limited clinical data and the heterogeneity of the existing studies, additional experimentation human studies with clinical trials or observations over more extended periods analyzing the effect of systemic and intravitreal corticosteroids in fungal endophthalmitis are needed before definitive conclusions can be drawn.

Preclinical, Journal:  Evaluating different models of maternal stress on stress-responsive systems in prepubertal mice. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 22, 2023
The experiments in the current study compare 3 stressors: prenatal exposure to dexamethasone (DEX), maternal high fat diet (HFD), and maternal caloric restriction (CR)...One common theme among the three models of maternal stress (DEX, CR, and HFD) was consistent data showing their role in activating the maternal and fetal immune response. By tuning in on the more immediate immunological aspect on the developing fetus (e.g., hormones, cytokines), additional studies may tease out more direct outcomes of maternal stress in rodents and increase their translational value to human studies.

Clinical data, Journal, IO biomarker:  Genomic and immune signatures predict clinical outcome in newly diagnosed multiple myeloma treated with immunotherapy regimens. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 22, 2023
    P2
Furthermore, evaluation of paired bone marrow profiles, taken before and after eight cycles of carfilzomib, lenalidomide and dexamethasone with daratumumab, shows that numbers of natural killer cells before treatment, high T cell receptor diversity before treatment, the disappearance of sustained immune activation (that is, B cells and T cells) and monocyte expansion over time are all predictive of sustained minimal residual disease negativity. Overall, this study provides strong evidence of a complex interplay between tumor cells and the immune microenvironment that is predictive of clinical outcome and depth of treatment response in patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma treated with highly effective combinations containing anti-CD38 antibodies.

Biomarker, Journal:  Prognostic factors for poor outcomes in patients with severe COVID-19 treated with remdesivir plus dexamethasone in Taiwan. (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 22, 2023
Overall, this study provides strong evidence of a complex interplay between tumor cells and the immune microenvironment that is predictive of clinical outcome and depth of treatment response in patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma treated with highly effective combinations containing anti-CD38 antibodies. High disease severity on admission and delayed initiation of remdesivir therapy were associated with poor outcomes in COVID-19 patients treated with remdesivir and dexamethasone.

    Limited long-term efficacy of corticosteroids in microscopic colitis emphasizing the need for advanced therapies (Poster exhibition) -  Dec 21, 2023 - Abstract #ECCOIBD2024ECCO_IBD_1060;
More advanced therapies are being used, including anti-TNF agents (n=25), vedolizumab (n=9) and JAK inhibitors (n=8)...However, more than 50% of patients relapsed upon steroid tapering and/or withdrawal, resulting in a substantial need for advanced therapy in this patient population. The long-term efficacy and safety of these advanced IBD therapies in MC should therefore be further investigated.

Review, Journal:  Lenalidomide use in multiple myeloma (Review). (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 21, 2023
Carfilzomib produces a rapid and profound response in patients with NDMM eligible for transplantation, but its cardiovascular side effects need to be closely monitored. The primary aim of the present review was to examine the pharmacological properties and pharmacokinetics of lenalidomide, as well as the efficacy and safety of lenalidomide-based treatments with reference to data from clinical trials and real-world studies.

Journal:  Salt-tolerance mechanisms in quinoa: Is glycinebetaine the missing piece of the puzzle? (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 20, 2023
We show that the differential distribution of sodium in plants depends on the variety, observing that varieties such as Pandela Rosada limit the passage transit of sodium to the aerial part of the plant, a mechanism that seems to be regulated by sodium transporters such as HKT1s or SOS1...The compound with a higher presence was glycinebetaine, which makes up 6% of the leaf dry matter under saline conditions. Our findings suggest that glycinebetaine can act as an osmolyte and/or osmoprotectant, facilitating plant development under high saline ambient.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  A case of duodenal ulcer as prominent manifestation of IgG4-related disease (Pubmed Central) -  Dec 20, 2023
The patient was diagnosed with IgG4-related disease and treated with prednisone at 40 mg daily...After treatment with omeprazole, the fecal occult blood was still positive...The patient was treated with intravenous methylprednisolone at 40 mg daily dosage and cyclophosphamide, and then the duodenal ulcer was healed...The digestive system manifestations of IgG4-related disease are mostly acute pancreatitis and cholangitis and rarely manifest as gastrointestinal ulcers. This case confirms that IgG4-related disease can present as a duodenal ulcer and is one of the rare causes of duodenal ulcers.
