    Preclinical, Journal:  Kinetic Properties and Pharmacological Modulation of High- and Low-Affinity Dopamine Transport in Striatal Astrocytes of Adult Rats. (Pubmed Central) -  May 25, 2024
    [3H]-DA uptake exhibited temperature, concentration and sodium dependence, with potent inhibition by desipramine, nortriptyline and decynium-22, suggesting the involvement of multiple transporters...Our findings demonstrate that striatal astrocytes aid in DA clearance by multiple transporters, which are influenced by dopaminergic drugs. Our study enhances the understanding of regional DA uptake, paving the way for targeted therapeutic interventions in dopaminergic disorders.

  • ||||||||||  sertraline / Generic mfg.
    Biomarker, Journal:  Movement Termination of Slow-Wave Sleep-A Potential Biomarker? (Pubmed Central) -  May 25, 2024
    A small sample (n = 4) of patients taking Sertraline experienced no SWS that ended with movement, which was significant compared to all other patients (t = 8.00; p < 0.001) and to n = 35 patients who did not take any medication (t = 4.22; p < 0.001). While this result was based on a small subsample and must be interpreted with caution, it warrants replication in a larger sample with and without seizures to further elucidate the role of the movement termination of SWS and its potential to serve as a biomarker for sleep continuity and for medication effects on sleep.
  • ||||||||||  Invega Sustenna (paliperidone palmitate extended-release 1-month injection) / J&J
    Review, Journal:  Combination of Two Long-Acting Antipsychotics in Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders: A Systematic Review. (Pubmed Central) -  May 25, 2024
    While this result was based on a small subsample and must be interpreted with caution, it warrants replication in a larger sample with and without seizures to further elucidate the role of the movement termination of SWS and its potential to serve as a biomarker for sleep continuity and for medication effects on sleep. Our review highlights that the treatment regimen with two concurrent LAI APs is already widely used in clinical practice and is recognized as providing a promising, effective, and relatively safe therapeutic strategy for treating the schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

  • ||||||||||  haloperidol / Generic mfg.
    Preclinical, Journal:  Prenatal MAM exposure raises kynurenic acid levels in the prefrontal cortex of adult rats. (Pubmed Central) -  May 25, 2024
    The present findings suggest that the cognitive deficit observed in MAM rats may be related to enhanced PFC KYNA levels which could be, in turn, mediated by the activation of cannabinoid CB1 receptor. These results further support the modulation of brain KYNA levels as a potential therapeutic strategy to ameliorate the cognitive dysfunctions in schizophrenia.
  • ||||||||||  fluoxetine / Generic mfg.
    Journal:  Hyperactivity of indirect pathway-projecting spiny projection neurons promotes compulsive behavior. (Pubmed Central) -  May 25, 2024
    Furthermore, we show that suppression of indirect pathway activity using optogenetics or treatment with the first-line OCD pharmacotherapy fluoxetine is associated with reduced grooming in Sapap3-knockouts. Together, these findings highlight the striatal indirect pathway as a potential treatment target for compulsive behavior.
  • ||||||||||  Adlarity (donepezil transdermal system) / Corium
    Review, Journal:  The donepezil transdermal system for the treatment of patients with mild, moderate, or severe Alzheimer's disease: a critical review. (Pubmed Central) -  May 24, 2024
    Cholinesterase inhibitors, along with memantine, are the mainstay of symptomatic treatment for AD (Alzheimer's disease); however, these medications are typically administered orally, which can be difficult for people with AD and their caregivers...The authors also compare the patch to the only other transdermal cholinesterase inhibitor on the market, rivastigmine, and highlight the potential advantages and disadvantages between these two treatments...In addition, there is no high dose (e.g. 23?mg) equivalent. Nevertheless, transdermal donepezil will be useful for people with AD and their caregivers, given its effectiveness and potential convenience.

    Further consensus in the pharmacological management of patients living with dementia is urgently needed. Our findings align with the previously reported reduction of 5-HT1B receptor binding in the raphe nuclei after SSRI administration and support future studies testing change in DBS 5-HT1B receptor binding as an SSRI treatment response marker.
  • ||||||||||  dihydroergotamine mesylate injection / Generic mfg., dihydroergotamine mesylate nasal spray / Generic mfg.
    Review, Journal:  Dihydroergotamine mesylate nasal spray: an acute treatment option for migraine in adults. (Pubmed Central) -  May 24, 2024
    DHE nasal spray could be considered as rescue treatment in patients who have failed other symptomatic therapeutic strategies. Nevertheless, in the perspective of tailored therapy, the intranasal route of administration and the consequent rapid onset of action may represent benefits putatively making DHE a treatment of choice for challenging migraine attacks such as those with nocturnal onset or quickly reaching the climax of both headache and neurovegetative associated symptoms.

  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Sex, race, and BMI in clinical trials of medications for obesity over the past three decades: a systematic review. (Pubmed Central) -  May 23, 2024
    Our systematic review suggests that future trials need to recruit traditionally under-represented populations to allow for accurate measures of efficacy of medications for obesity, enabling more informed decisions by clinicians. It is also hoped that these data will help to refine trial recruitment strategies to ensure that future studies are relevant to the population affected by obesity.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Novel, fast, and reliable electrochemical dsDNA biosensor based on O-terminated pristine nanocrystalline boron-doped diamond electrode for DNA interaction studies. (Pubmed Central) -  May 23, 2024
    The bioanalytical applicability of the fabricated dsDNA/O-B-NCDE biosensor was verified by examining the nature of the interaction between dsDNA and five selected DNA intercalators - namely thioridazine hydrochloride (TR), trimipramine maleate (TRIM), levomepromazine maleate (LEV), imipramine hydrochloride (IMI), and prochlorperazine maleate (PER) - where intercalation was proven for all of the five tested compounds. Moreover, the proposed novel bioanalytical test offers the possibility to selectively distinguish between the phenothiazine representatives (TR, LEV, and PER) and representatives of tricyclic antidepressants group (TRIM and IMI).
  • ||||||||||  Retrospective data, Journal:  Changes in Psychiatric Medication Use During the COVID-19 Pandemic in a Pediatric Long-Term Care Facility. (Pubmed Central) -  May 23, 2024
