  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Compromised angiogenesis and vascular Integrity in impaired diabetic wound healing. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 21, 2020
    Together, these studies provide novel information about the complexity of the perturbation of angiogenesis in diabetic wounds. Targeting factors responsible for wound resolution and vascular pruning, as well those that affect pericyte recruitment, maturation, and stability may have the potential to improve diabetic skin wound healing.
  • ||||||||||  [VIRTUAL] Interdisciplinary and Multimodal Management of Peripheral Edema to Improve Cancer Patients Functional Status () -  Jul 14, 2020 - Abstract #ACRM2020ACRM_256;
    We will spotlight a case series of cancer patients who underwent multicomponent compression bandaging, a standard technique recommended for lymphedema and chronic venous insufficiency, for bilateral lower extremity edema of multifactorial origin refractory to systemic medications.11 We will also briefly discuss the difference between generalized venous edema and lymphedema, how they are similarly managed, and various challenges involved in management of these types of edema. Finally, we will provide a literature reviewbased summary and recommendations for treating lymphedema and generalized peripheral venous edema with use of an interdisciplinary and multimodal approach along with outcome measurements to assess effective edema management.
  • ||||||||||  Biomarker, Journal:  Impaired albumin function: A novel potential indicator for liver function damage? (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 10, 2020
    In this review, we summarize the factors affecting albumin function and discuss the clinical significance of impairments in albumin function in various liver diseases. Key messagesThe importance of albumin depends not only on its concentration, but also on its various physiological functions.Impaired albumin function has been reported in a variety of liver diseases, and is associated with disease severity and prognosis, thereby proposing the concept of "effective albumin concentration".Albumin dysfunction occurs earlier than other conventional indicators, and albumin dysfunction may be a new biomarker of early impairment in liver function.Many exogenous and endogenous factors lead to post-translational modifications of albumin, which alters the three-dimensional structure of albumin, resulting in a decrease in its biological activity.

    [VIRTUAL] Postictal Pulmonary Edema - A Forgotten Entity (ATS 2020 Virtual) -  Jul 6, 2020 - Abstract #ATSI2020ATS-I_6884;
    She presented to the emergency room in a postictal state following a grand mal seizure after missing two doses of regularly-prescribed levetiracetam...She initially received inhaled tranexamic acid for concern for diffuse alveolar haemorrhage and vancomycin, levofloxacin, and ceftriaxone empirically and then continued on azithromycin for concern for atypical pneumonia...It has been postulated that pulmonary venoconstriction secondary to intracranial hypertension and sympathetic stimulation causes pulmonary edema by increasing pulmonary capillary hydrostatic pressure. Increased pulmonary capillary permeability is also implicated, but the mechanism is yet to be completely delineated.
  • ||||||||||  [VIRTUAL] There's No Cap for This Leak: A Case of Systemic Capillary Leak Syndrome (ATS 2020 Virtual) -  Jul 6, 2020 - Abstract #ATSI2020ATS-I_6834;
    Our patient had two prior episodes of AKI and rhabdomyolysis likely secondary to recurrent episodes of SCLS. Early recognition is critical as some evidence suggests that prophylaxis with theophylline, terbutaline, or intravenous immunoglobulin can reduce mortality and the incidence of subsequent attacks in some patients.

    [VIRTUAL] Pulmonary Edema Following Naloxone Administration for Opioid Overdose: A Case Series (ATS 2020 Virtual) -  Jul 6, 2020 - Abstract #ATSI2020ATS-I_6727;
    Nine of ten patients required ICU admission, seven were intubated and mechanically-ventilated, four received inhaled epoprostenol for refractory hypoxemia, and one patient was supported with veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). In our experience, naloxone associated pulmonary edema, while ultimately a self-limited condition, is frequently life-threatening and can demand substantial critical care resources to manage.
  • ||||||||||  [VIRTUAL] Susceptibility of Mice to Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Pneumonia Is Enhanced by Ventilator-Induced Lung Injury (ATS 2020 Virtual) -  Jul 6, 2020 - Abstract #ATSI2020ATS-I_5631;
    Mice subjected to HVt-MV (VILI) were more susceptible to PsA infection and developed sepsis, whereas protectively (LVt) ventilated animals only developed a mild local pneumonia. This novel murine PsA VAP model shows that MV-associated inflammation contributes to the development of pneumonia and may thus enable for mechanistic investigations on the pathophysiology of VAP.

  • ||||||||||  [VIRTUAL] The Goosechase: Pericardial Tamponade as a Sympathetic Response to Iatrogenic Duodenal Hematoma (ATS 2020 Virtual) -  Jul 6, 2020 - Abstract #ATSI2020ATS-I_4286;
    These exudates, often pleural or pericardial in nature, are felt to be caused by changes in capillary permeability, changes in lymphatic flow, or diaphragmatic penetration in the setting of local inflammation. A diagnosis of exclusion, consider the diagnosis of sympathetic pericardial tamponade in the setting of an unexplained pericardial effusion and intraabdominal pathology.

    Preclinical, Journal:  Successful Reversal of Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome in a mouse model by Rapamycin, a mTOR Pathway Inhibitor. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 26, 2020
    Further study showed the functional roles of the mTOR signaling pathway in the hyperstimulation-induced ovarian extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling as the expression of α2M, a broad proteolytic inhibitor in both ovary and serum was dramatically decreased after rapamycin treatment. Since a single injection of rapamycin during superovulation had no side effects on ovulation and early embryonic development, we propose rapamycin may be a good candidate to lower and prevent the risk of OHSS in future.
  • ||||||||||  [VIRTUAL] SPECT/CT Localization of Incidental Diverticular Bleed After Radioiodine (i131) Therapy for Metastatic Thyroid Cancer () -  Jun 20, 2020 - Abstract #ENDOI2020ENDO-I_2182;
    We propose that the isolated focus of radioiodine activity in the sigmoid colon associated with transient self-limited bleed could be either related to preexisting diverticulitis leading to I131 accumulation secondary to hyperemia, increased vascular capillary permeability, and subsequent aggravation of colonic mucosa resulting in a transient bleed or due to incidental nonspecific pooling of radioiodine in a colonic diverticulum resulting in secondary mucosal irritation with subsequent minor bleeding. To our knowledge this is the first reported case of SPECT/CT localization of radioiodine to an isolated colonic diverticular bleed in a patient status post I131 therapy for metastatic papillary thyroid cancer.

    Preclinical, Journal:  Preparation of resveratrol dry suspension and its immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory activity in mice. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 8, 2020
    RDS (0.1 g/kg/d) significantly inhibited the acetic acid-induced capillary permeability, and at doses of 0.33 and 1 g/kg/d repressed the ear swelling and granuloma formation in immunocompromised mice.Discussion and RDS is a stable, cheaper, and suitable preparation with potent immunoregulatory and anti-inflammatory activities. Keeping in view these remarkable properties, RDS could be an appropriate preparation for clinic use of resveratrol.
  • ||||||||||  [VIRTUAL] Guillain-Barré syndrome with posterior reversible white matter lesions (ePoster) -  Apr 9, 2020 - Abstract #EAN2020EAN_693;
    The aim of this study is to investigate the role of miRNAs in inflammation pathways and the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy. GBS can be considered as an independent risk factor of PRES, due to dysautonomia as well as to increased capillary permeability caused by cytokine production.

    Clinical, Journal:  Targeting pulmonary capillary permeability to reduce lung congestion in heart failure: a randomized, controlled pilot trial. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 1, 2020
    In this pilot trial, GSK2798745 was found to be safe and well-tolerated, with a trend toward improved gas transfer. Further investigation is warranted in larger studies to determine whether treatment with TRPV4 antagonists or alternative treatments targeting capillary permeability might be effective to improve lung congestion, pulmonary gas transfer and clinical status in patients with acute or chronic HF.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  On the potential use of dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI parameters as radiomics features of cervical cancer. (Pubmed Central) -  Mar 22, 2020
    Further investigation is warranted in larger studies to determine whether treatment with TRPV4 antagonists or alternative treatments targeting capillary permeability might be effective to improve lung congestion, pulmonary gas transfer and clinical status in patients with acute or chronic HF. With the use of high-temporal resolution DCE-MRI, all tracer kinetic models could reflect pathophysiological differences between cervix carcinoma and normal tissue (with significant differences in Ve and PS) and potentially yield radiomic features with diagnostic value.

  • ||||||||||  Lysyl oxidase inhibition prevents inflammation-dependent retinal vascular atrophy in early diabetic retinopathy (Room 301) -  Mar 9, 2020 - Abstract #ARVO2020ARVO_2393;
    Inflammation is seen as a key player in the development of vascular lesions in early DR, but how inflammation occurs is not fully understood. We have recently discovered that the increased stiffness of retinal blood vessels contributes significantly to retinal inflammation in diabetes, and the goal of this study is to determine whether inhibition of capillary stiffness in diabetes will prevent or significantly delay the development of clinically-recognized lesions of DR.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Systemic subclinical lymphedema due to obesity as the cause of clinical lymphedema: A new concept. (Pubmed Central) -  Feb 25, 2020
    Animal studies show that obesity and its progression lead to changes in the lymphatic system and microcirculation with alterations in lymphatic motility, inflammatory processes, capillary permeability and immune response. Systemic subclinical lymphedema is diagnosed when above normal fluid levels are detected in all the extremities and the trunk with the progression of obesity; this can lead to the appearance of clinical lymphedema of the extremities.

  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Ac2-26 ameliorates lung ischemia-reperfusion injury via the eNOS pathway. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 18, 2020
    Ac2-26 reduced LIRI and improved alveoli-capillary permeability by inhibiting oxygen stress, inflammation and apoptosis. The protective effect of Ac2-26 on LIRI largely depended on the endothelial nitric oxide synthase pathway.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  The pleura and the endocrine system. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 12, 2020
    It can lead to a rise in the releasing factor for growth hormone (GHRH), human beta chorionic gonadotropin (Beta-hCG), and insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2). The consequence of such hormonal imbalance include hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy, gynecomastia, and refractory hypoglycemia, respectively.
