  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Muscle parameters in fragility fracture risk prediction in older adults: A scoping review. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 8, 2024
Of these, hand grip strength and gait speed are likely to be the most practical measures for inclusion in clinical practice, as in the evaluation of sarcopenia or in further fracture risk assessment scores. Measures of muscle mass did not appear to predict fragility fractures and might benefit from further research, on D3-creatine dilution test, lean mass indexes and artificial intelligence methods.

Journal:  CREG1 deficiency impaired myoblast differentiation and skeletal muscle regeneration. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 8, 2024
plays a versatile role in regulating the quantity of mitochondria and the oxidative capacity, ultimately leading to an improvement in myosteatosis symptoms. Our findings suggest that CREG1 may be a potential therapeutic target for skeletal muscle regeneration.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Plasma microRNA signature associated with skeletal muscle wasting in post-menopausal osteoporotic women. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 8, 2024
Our findings suggest that CREG1 may be a potential therapeutic target for skeletal muscle regeneration. In this study, we identified, for the first time, two miRNA signatures, hsa-miR-126-5p, hsa-miR-146a-5p and hsa-miR-425-5p; and hsa-miR-126-5p, hsa-miR-146a-5p, hsa-miR-145-5p and hsa-miR-25-3p, specifically associated with muscle mass wasting in post-menopausal osteoporotic women.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Sarcopenia and Its Influencing Factors in Patients With Colorectal Cancer. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 7, 2024
Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that age, TNM stage smoking history, total protein, upper arm circumference, waist circumference, and Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) score were independently associated with sarcopenia at different stages. This study suggests that routine data should be used to provide targeted care during hospitalization for patients with colorectal cancer in order to reduce the incidence of sarcopenia and improve prognosis.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Walking net O2 rises with advancing age in older women: where to go from here? (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 5, 2024
These data support the premise that, in older women, walking net O2 rises with advancing age, and additionally, the RTD:MVC ratio and PFROM are independent correlates of non-graded net O2. Exercise interventions with a high degree of training specificity including explosive, velocity-based elements may promote independent mobility in older women.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Cancer history and physical function in patients with cardiovascular disease. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 5, 2024
Exercise interventions with a high degree of training specificity including explosive, velocity-based elements may promote independent mobility in older women. The coexistence of low physical function and cancer history in patients with CVD was associated with a significantly higher mortality risk, even after adjusting for covariates (cancer history/low
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Challenges in Identifying Malnutrition in Obesity; An Overview of the State of the Art and Directions for Future Research. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 5, 2024
Challenges include the identification of appropriate cut-off values for phenotypic criteria (unintentional weight loss, low body mass index and muscle mass) and etiological criteria such as reduced food intake and inflammation for the population with obesity. Overall, this review emphasises the need for modified screening tools and diagnostic criteria to recognise and assess malnutrition in obesity, leading to improved clinical outcomes and overall well-being.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Sarcopenic obesity and the impact on bone health. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 5, 2024
Although the pathophysiological pathways underlying OSO are not fully understood, the clinical implications underscore the need for expanded research in this field. This research is crucial for enabling early diagnosis and implementing effective therapeutic interventions, with the goal of reducing morbidity and mortality and enhancing quality of life.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Sarcopenia and All-Cause Mortality Risk in Community-Dwelling Rural Malaysian Older Adults. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 5, 2024
Older adults with sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia had a 114% (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.14; 95% CI: 1.59-2.87) and 146% (HR: 2.46; 95% CI: 1.79-3.39) increased mortality risk compared with those without sarcopenia (HR: 2.14; 95% CI: 1.59-2.87). Our findings indicate that early intervention is recommended to prevent sarcopenia in older adults.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Novel dietary strategies to manage sarcopenia. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 5, 2024
Longitudinal data are lacking, which makes it hard to draw strong conclusions. However, the effects of a physical activity combined with a set of nutrition interventions on sarcopenia seems promising.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Myoprotective whole foods, muscle health and sarcopenia in older adults. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 5, 2024
However, the effects of a physical activity combined with a set of nutrition interventions on sarcopenia seems promising. Although evidence for myoprotective roles of dairy, fruit and vegetables is emerging from observational studies, higher level evidence from intervention studies is needed for these foods to be recommended in diets of older adults to prevent and/or treat sarcopenia.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Prehabilitation in patients awaiting liver transplantation. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 5, 2024
Overall, it appears that prehabilitation with exercise training is feasible, and safe in patients awaiting LT. Higher quality and larger studies are needed to confirm its impact on pre- and post-transplantation-related outcomes.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  The missing piece of the puzzle - The key role of the dietitian in the management of Parkinson's disease. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 5, 2024
Since many non-motor symptoms such as dysphagia, constipation and orthostatic hypotension and PD complications such as weight loss and sarcopenia can be improved through dietary intervention, dietitians are a critical missing piece of the PD management puzzle. This paper serves to review the role of dietitians and medical nutrition therapy in management of PD as well as a call to action for future studies to investigate improvement of nutritional status and quality of life for all PwP.
  • ||||||||||  Trial completion date, Trial primary completion date:  Sarcopenia in Colorectal Cancer Patients, Intervention Study (clinicaltrials.gov) -  Apr 4, 2024
    P=N/A,  N=370, Recruiting,
Thus, further research is needed to provide a definitive answer on any role of metformin in improving frailty and/or sarcopenia in T2DM. Trial completion date: Mar 2023 --> Dec 2024 | Trial primary completion date: Dec 2022 --> Oct 2024
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Preoperative geriatric assessment of urological patients: a narrative review. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 4, 2024
Which method of preoperative assessment is chosen is secondary. It is important that the risk of geriatric syndromes is assessed prior to surgical interventions in order to determine the most suitable therapeutic approach for each patient.
