  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Sarcopenia definitions and their association with fracture risk in older Swedish women. (Pubmed Central) -  May 2, 2024
    Individuals with sarcopenia defined by SDOC had a higher risk for any fractures (HR: 1.48; 95% CI: 1.10, 1.99) and MOF (HR: 1.42; 95% CI: 1.03, 1.98) compared with individuals without sarcopenia after adjusting for clinical risk factors used in FRAX. In conclusion, sarcopenia defined by SDOC, incorporating muscle function/strength, was the only sarcopenia definition associated with fracture risk in older women.

  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Research Progress in the Association Between Sarcopenic Obesity and Cancer (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 30, 2024
    Skeletal muscle mass loss occurs frequently during neoadjuvant chemotherapy for locally advanced gastric cancer and could adversely affect survival outcomes. As the global prevalence of obesity and the elderly population continues to increase,the incidence of sarcopenic obesity is also on the rise and becoming a global public health concern.Sarcopenic obesity not only increases the incidence of cancer,but is also associated with poor clinical outcomes in various cancers,such as surgical complications,increased risk of death,and possibly even an impact on chemotherapy as well.Therefore,sarcopenic obesity is emerging as an important indicator of prognosis in cancer patients.However,there are limited relevant studies on the association between sarcopenic obesity and cancer in China.This article reviews the definition and diagnosis of sarcopenic obesity,the clinical correlation between sarcopenic obesity and cancer,and the potential mechanisms,with a view to providing a reference for future clinical practice in China.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Effects of Personalized Exercise Prescriptions on Sarcopenia in Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 30, 2024
Sarcopenia is a major factor affecting the health and quality of life of the patients undergoing hemodialysis.Exercise can effectively ameliorate sarcopenia in these patients.However,the type,intensity,time,and frequency of exercise influence the effect of exercise.This review describes the effects of different exercise prescriptions on sarcopenia in the patients undergoing hemodialysis.It aims to assist medical staff in developing personalized exercise prescriptions,guiding patients to engage in exercise,and provide effective strategies for the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia in the patients undergoing hemodialysis.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Extracellular Vesicles and Exosomes in the Control of the Musculoskeletal Health. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 30, 2024
    Extracellular vesicles are recognized as crucial players in the bone-muscle cross-talk. Additional studies however are required to refine their use as biomarkers of early alterations of the musculoskeletal system, and as potential therapeutic tools.
  • ||||||||||  Retrospective data, Journal:  Effect of Sarcopenia on Swallowing in Patients With Head and Neck Cancer. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 30, 2024
    Patients with pretreatment sarcopenia had higher rates of dysphagia before treatment and were more likely to develop aspiration after completion of HNC therapy. Sarcopenia is readily measured using cross-sectional imaging and may be useful for identifying patients at risk of swallowing dysfunction and those most likely to benefit from prehabilitation efforts.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Mitochondrial remodeling underlying age-induced skeletal muscle wasting: let's talk about sex. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 30, 2024
    Despite skeletal muscle atrophy and fibrosis, males maintained their testosterone levels throughout aging, as well as their androgen receptor content, and the age-induced mitochondrial remodeling was limited to increased abundance of pyruvate dehydrogenase E1 component subunit beta and electron transfer flavoprotein subunit beta. Herein, for the first time, it was demonstrated that age affects more severely the skeletal muscle mitochondrial proteome of females, reinforcing the necessity of sex-personalized approaches towards sarcopenia management, and the inevitability of the assessment of mitochondrion-related therapeutics.

    Journal:  Equisetum arvense standardized dried extract hinders age-related osteosarcopenia. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 30, 2024
    Thus, considering that a chronic low-grade inflammatory state predisposes to both osteoporosis and sarcopenia, we tested a standardized hydroalcoholic extract of EQ in in vitro models of muscle atrophy [C2C12 myotubes treated with proinflammatory cytokines (TNF?/IFN?), excess glucocorticoids (dexamethasone), or the osteokine, receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL)] and osteoclastogenesis (RAW 264.7 cells treated with RANKL)...Consumption of EQ (500?mg/kg/day) by pre-geriatric C57BL/6 mice for 3 months translated into: i) maintenance of muscle mass and performance; ii) restrained myofiber oxidative shift; iii) slowed down age-related modifications in osteoporotic bone, significantly preserving trabecular connectivity density; iv) reduced muscle- and spleen-related inflammation. EQ can preserve muscle functionality and bone remodeling during aging, potentially valuable as a natural treatment for osteosarcopenia.
  • ||||||||||  5-fluorouracil / Generic mfg., diphenhydramine / Generic mfg.
    Journal:  Transcriptome-based deep learning analysis identifies drug candidates targeting protein synthesis and autophagy for the treatment of muscle wasting disorder. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 30, 2024
    Our findings suggest that dimenhydrinate, a combination of 8-chlorotheophylline and diphenhydramine, is a potential therapeutic for sarcopenia...It improved muscle regeneration in animals with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and facilitated muscle and fat recovery in animals with chemotherapy-induced sarcopenia. As an FDA-approved drug, dimenhydrinate could be applied for sarcopenia treatment after a relatively short development period, providing hope for individuals suffering from this debilitating condition.
