  • ||||||||||  Journal:  A Case Report of Probable Secondary Sarcopenia After Intensive Care Hospitalization. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 5, 2024
    Especially in the treatment of patients with prolonged immobilization syndrome, management should not only focus on functional limitations but patients should also be evaluated and followed up for sarcopenia. In this case report, we present the management of probable secondary sarcopenia in the intensive care unit as a result of urosepsis and discuss it in the light of the literature.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Association between sarcopenic obesity and knee osteoarthritis: A (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 4, 2024
    The implications for clinical practice are discussed, including the need to incorporate effective resistance exercise into weight loss programs for individuals with sarcopenic obesity. This is critical as a general weight loss program alone among individuals with sarcopenic obesity can include substantial loss of muscle mass, potentially predisposing patients to further functional decline.
  • ||||||||||  Biomarker, Trial completion date, Trial primary completion date:  FUNNEL+: Effectiveness of a Cardiac Rehabilitation Program in Elderly Patients With Heart Failure. (clinicaltrials.gov) -  Jun 3, 2024
    P=N/A,  N=126, Recruiting,
    Further studies are needed to investigate the validity of key muscles and to validate muscle ultrasound among older hospitalized patients. Trial completion date: Mar 2024 --> Mar 2025 | Trial primary completion date: Feb 2024 --> Dec 2024
  • ||||||||||  Biomarker, Journal:  Appraisal of a newly developed ALBI-sarcopenia score as a prognostic marker in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 3, 2024
    Sarcopenia is a risk factor for complications in colorectal ESD, suggesting that colorectal ESD could be performed for patients with sarcopenia, although much caution should be taken. The newly introduced ALBI-sarcopenia score has demonstrated superior effectiveness in comparison to MELD-sarcopenia score, overcoming the shortcomings associated MELD score in forecasting outcomes for patients with HCC.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Uncovering sarcopenia and frailty in older adults by using muscle ultrasound-A narrative review. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 3, 2024
    Such advancements could result in the implementation of earlier interventions to prevent or treat these conditions, resulting in an overall improvement in the health and quality of life of the elderly population. This narrative review describes the benefits and challenges when using ultra-sound for the evaluation of frailty and sarcopenia.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Nutrition of aging people with diabetes mellitus: Focus on sarcopenia. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 1, 2024
    Further recommendations that both promote metabolic health and have demonstrated at least a potential to increase muscle strength include prioritizing polyunsaturated fatty acids as a fat source and maintaining adequate levels of vitamin D. Clinicians should consult their patients on dietary optimization, but evidence is insufficient to recommend additional supplementation. Lastly, an emerging challenge of diabetes and sarcopenia is sarcopenic obesity, which requires the combination of a hypocaloric diet with increased protein intake.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal, Adverse events, HEOR:  The predictive value of masticatory function for adverse health outcomes in older adults: a systematic review. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 1, 2024
    Regarding the other identified adverse health outcomes, i.e., physical measures and sarcopenia, history of falling and nutritional status, only cross-sectional studies were available and results were less concordant. As all prospective studies showed that reduced masticatory function in older adults is associated with adverse health outcomes, prevention of decline of masticatory function by adequate oral care may contribute to healthy ageing.

    Body composition phenotypes in IPF and their association with clinical outcomes (PS-29; Poster board no. 14) -  May 31, 2024 - Abstract #ERS2024ERS_5111;
    It has been demonstrated that not only BMI but also FFM should be incorporated in IPF evaluations to reach therapeutic goals such as dyspnea perception and improved QoL. Table 1: Demographic Data and Results Mean
  • ||||||||||  Association between the gut microbiome and low skeletal muscle mass in patients with COPD (PS-7; Poster board no. 15) -  May 31, 2024 - Abstract #ERS2024ERS_3817;
    Sparse partial least squares discriminant analysis detected several differentiating genera, including Butyricimonas, Bilophila, and Lachnospiracea. Our results suggest that alterations in the gut microbial composition may contribute to the progression of sarcopenia in patients with COPD.
  • ||||||||||  Lung and quadriceps ultrasound in the assessment of COPD exacerbation (Strauss 1) -  May 31, 2024 - Abstract #ERS2024ERS_1079;
    The LUS-Score has a high sensitivity in the diagnosis of pulmonary infiltrates. Patients with an ultrasound diagnosis of sarcopenia have greater severity according to the DECAF score and a longer hospital stay.
