  • ||||||||||  β2-Receptor Agonism Averts Indoxyl Sulfate-Induced Sarcopenic Phenotype of Mouse Skeletal C2C12 Myotube (Exhibit Hall, Walter E. Washington Convention Center) -  Oct 14, 2019 - Abstract #KIDNEYWEEK2019KIDNEY_WEEK_1803;
    On the other hand, clenbuterol and salbutamol partially attenuated IS-induced upregulation of MuRF-1 and Atrogin-1, and prevented the degradation of MyH and fast twitch muscle fibers. Conclusion β2-agonist has a therapeutic potential for preventing IS induced muscle atrophy, predominantly fast twitch muscle fiber atrophy.
  • ||||||||||  Exploration of Dietary Protein Intake and Skeletal Muscle Mass and Function in Non-Dialysis CKD (Exhibit Hall, Walter E. Washington Convention Center) -  Oct 14, 2019 - Abstract #KIDNEYWEEK2019KIDNEY_WEEK_1797;
    Further research is required to confirm these findings which suggest efforts to increase protein intake in this group may confer favourable effects on muscle and functional preservation. Results Table 1 Funding Private Foundation Support
  • ||||||||||  Skeletal Muscle Index from CT Scans Can Predict Muscle Strength in CKD (Exhibit Hall, Walter E. Washington Convention Center) -  Oct 14, 2019 - Abstract #KIDNEYWEEK2019KIDNEY_WEEK_1793;
    Identifying those with probable sarcopenia during routine care provides an opportunity to attempt to intervene to regress or prevent worsening of sarcopenia. Funding NIDDK Support
  • ||||||||||  Clinical Significance of Nutritional Predictors in Prevalent Hemodialysis Patients (Exhibit Hall, Walter E. Washington Convention Center) -  Oct 14, 2019 - Abstract #KIDNEYWEEK2019KIDNEY_WEEK_1786;
    SMI might be an important predictor for all-cause mortality in diabetic patients. In patients with history of CVD or CVA, management of serum calcium and phosphorus is particularly important in aspect of MACE.
  • ||||||||||  Urinary L-FABP Reflects the Degree of Sarcopenia in a Diabetic Kidney Disease Model (Exhibit Hall, Walter E. Washington Convention Center) -  Oct 14, 2019 - Abstract #KIDNEYWEEK2019KIDNEY_WEEK_1445;
    Conclusion Urinary L-FABP increased along with the progression of sarcopenia and reflected the degree of sarcopenia in DKD. In clinical practice, urinary L-FABP may be useful for monitoring the sarcopenia as well as DKD in the type 2 diabetic patients.
  • ||||||||||  Biomarker, Clinical, Journal:  Mitochondrial function is impaired in the skeletal muscle of pre-frail elderly. (Pubmed Central) -  Oct 13, 2019
    Analysis of microarray data showed that mitochondrial genes were also significantly down-regulated in muscle of pre-frail compared to active elderly. These results show that mitochondrial impairment is a hallmark of pre-frailty development and the onset of decline in muscle function in the elderly.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Comparing SARC-F with SARC-CalF to Screen Sarcopenia in Community Living Older Adults. (Pubmed Central) -  Oct 13, 2019
    We reported that addition of calf circumference item to SARC-F tool improved the specificity and diagnostic accuracy of SARC-F but it did not improve the sensitivity in a community-dwelling Turkish older adult population sample that had low prevalence of sarcopenia. The performance of SARC-CalF tool to screen sarcopenia is to be studied in different populations and living settings.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  DXA-Rectified Appendicular Lean Mass: Development of Ultrasound Prediction Models in Older Adults. (Pubmed Central) -  Oct 13, 2019
    The results indicated that ultrasound MT combined with height, age and sex can be used to accurately estimate aLM minus aFFAT in older Japanese adults. Newly developed ultrasound prediction equations to estimate aLM minus aFFAT may be a valuable tool in population-based studies to assess age-related rectified lean tissue mass loss.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Insufficient Protein Intakes is Highly Prevalent among Physically Active Elderly. (Pubmed Central) -  Oct 13, 2019
    The majority of physically active elderly and in particular males (i.e. 67%) does not reach a protein intake of 1.2 g/kg/d, which may offset the health benefits of an active lifestyle on muscle synthesis and prevention of sarcopenia. Intervention studies are warranted to assess whether protein supplementation may enhance muscle mass and strength in physically active elderly.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Pre-sarcopenia in patients undergoing hemodialysis: Prevalence and association with biochemical parameters. (Pubmed Central) -  Oct 13, 2019
    Further research is needed to refine BIA methods for segmental composition estimates in heterogeneous samples and disease-specific populations before this methods can be used reliably in a clinical setting. Approximately one-third of patients undergoing replacement therapy presented pre-sarcopenia, but no association with serum albumin and CRP concentrations were found.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Muscle, Health and Costs: A Glance at their Relationship. (Pubmed Central) -  Oct 11, 2019
    Disability in ADL and comorbidities were associated with QoL and health care costs in community-dwelling older adults. Improving physical performance may be a valuable target for future intervention and research to impact health burden and costs.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Prevalence of sarcopenia and associated factors in institutionalised older adult patients. (Pubmed Central) -  Oct 11, 2019
    The present study suggests that sarcopenia is highly prevalent in patients living in long-term care institutions, especially in female patients. Our findings support that the muscle mass was negatively associated with poor nutritional status and poor capacity to develop basic activities of daily living that indicates high dependency of these patients and high necessity of care.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Agreement between PG-SGA category and fat-free mass in colorectal cancer patients. (Pubmed Central) -  Oct 11, 2019
    Our results indicate a low agreement between PG-SGA category and low FFMI among patients with non-metastatic CRC. In clinical practice, PG-SGA should be supplemented by muscle mass assessments by BIA or other methods in order to detect low FFM in this patient group.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Sarcopenia - unnoticed problem of aging society (Pubmed Central) -  Oct 11, 2019
    The best-confirmed methods of treatment of sarcopenia are nutritional hyperalimentation and resistance training. Pharmacological agents, i.e. selective androgen receptor modulators, and myostatin inhibitors are not sufficiently tested to be approved, by the FDA as a treatment regimen of sarcopenia.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Depression and Handgrip Strength Among U.S. Adults Aged 60 Years and Older from NHANES 2011-2014. (Pubmed Central) -  Oct 10, 2019
    Future longitudinal studies should investigate the causal processes and potential moderators and mediators of the relationships between depression and reduced handgrip strength. This information may further encourage the use of depression and handgrip strength assessments and aid in the monitoring and implementation of health care services that address both physical and mental health limitations among older adult populations.
