We demonstrated that an eight-wk intervention consisting of a leucine-enriched amino acid supplementation and low-intensity resistance training increased muscle mass, strength, and physical function in post-stroke patients with sarcopenia. Our results suggested that preoperative cachexia prolongs postoperative LOS in elderly patients with gastrointestinal cancer, implying that cachexia should be assessed and treated before surgery.

(Pubmed Central) - Jan 24, 2020 We have conducted a study to evaluate the effects of whey protein in colorectal cancer patients, undergoing 5-fluorouracil-based chemotherapy...At univariate analysis, a condition of malnutrition risk according to MUST (relative risk [RR] = 7.5, P = .02) or MNA (RR = 1.45, P = .02) and ProLYOtin intake (RR = 0.12, P = .01) were found to be significantly predictive of chemotherapy toxicity. At present, our study shows how whey protein could be an important therapeutic option to improve nutritional status, and particularly to prevent severe toxicity during chemotherapy.

Therefore, we suggest that milk proteins could be potent health supplements to prevent aging-associated diseases, especially sarcopenia.

Sarcopenia is initiated in motor neurons leading to a disruption of neuromuscular junctions that results in mitochondrial dysfunction and increased generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in skeletal muscle. The mitochondrial ROS generated in muscle feedback on the neuromuscular junctions propagating more disruption of neuromuscular junctions and more ROS production by muscle resulting in a vicious cycle that eventually leads to disaggregation of neuromuscular junctions, denervation, and loss of muscle fibers.

The consumption of dairy products by older people may reduce the risk of frailty, especially with high consumption of low-fat milk and yogurt, and may also reduce the risk of sarcopenia by improving skeletal muscle mass through the addition of nutrient-rich dairy proteins (ricotta cheese) to the habitual diet. Despite the scarcity of evidence on the topic, our systematic review shows that there are some positive effects of dairy products on frailty and sarcopenia, whereas studies concerning cognitive decline have contradictory findings.
