  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Independent Association Between Cardio-Ankle Vascular Index and Sarcopenia in Older U.K. Adults. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 31, 2020
    Indices of sarcopenia are independently associated with a higher CAVI, with greater correlation in women than men. The CAVI can be used to assess overall vascular compliance and may be a useful operator-independent tool that can be used to measure sarcopenia and its cardiovascular implications in older adults.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Effective treatment improves the body composition of patients with esophageal motility disorders. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 31, 2020
    The improvements in the Short Form-36 domains of General Health (P = 0.0007) and Vitality (P = 0.003) were significantly higher in the muscle-increase group. The findings show that effective treatment improved the body composition of patients with esophageal motility disorder and that the Eckardt score and serum prealbumin may aid the prediction of increased appendicular skeletal muscle mass after treatment, resulting in a better quality of life.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP): A Segmental Progeroid Syndrome. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 31, 2020
    Production of Activin A, platelet-derived growth factor, metalloproteinases, interleukin 6, and other inflammatory cytokines as part of the senescence-associated secretory phenotype could conceivably mediate the initial signaling cascade that results in the intense fibroproliferative response as well as the tissue-resident stem cell reprogramming leading up to ectopic endochondral bone formation. Consideration of FOP as a segmental progeroid syndrome offers a unique perspective into potential mechanisms of normal aging and may also provide insight for identification of new targets for therapeutic interventions in FOP.
  • ||||||||||  Trial completion date, Trial primary completion date:  iFRAIL: Improving Frailty With a Rigorous Ambulation Intervention in Lung Transplant Patients (clinicaltrials.gov) -  Jan 31, 2020
    P=N/A,  N=174, Recruiting,
    Consideration of FOP as a segmental progeroid syndrome offers a unique perspective into potential mechanisms of normal aging and may also provide insight for identification of new targets for therapeutic interventions in FOP. Trial completion date: Dec 2020 --> Dec 2021 | Trial primary completion date: Jul 2020 --> Jul 2021
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Prognostic implications of diagnosing frailty and sarcopenia in vascular surgery practice. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 30, 2020
    Frailty and sarcopenia overlap to varying degrees in patients presenting to vascular surgery clinics and can be used alone or in combination to predict long-term survival of older patients. However, our data indicate that it was only the diagnosis of frailty that was an independent predictor of mortality and had the strongest prognostic significance in patients undergoing both surgical and nonoperative management.
  • ||||||||||  metformin / Generic mfg.
    Clinical, Observational data, Journal:  A cross-sectional study: Associations between sarcopenia and clinical characteristics of patients with type 2 diabetes. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 30, 2020
    BMI (body mass index) (OR: 0.365, 95%CI: 0.236-0.661), exercise (OR: 0.016, 95%CI: 0.001-0.169), female (OR: 0.000, 95%CI: 0.00-0.012), metformin (OR: 0.159, 95%CI: 0.026-0.967) and TSM (trunk skeletal muscle mass) (OR: 0.395, 95%CI: 0.236-0.661) were protective factors for sarcopenia.Sarcopenia in patients with T2DM is associated with increased age, increased TFM and increased FT4 level. Regular exercise, female, metformin administrations, high BMI and increased TSM are associated with lower risk of sarcopenia.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Aging and Imaging Assessment of Body Composition: From Fat to Facts. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 30, 2020
    Because of the great advantages offered by imaging tools in research and clinics, the attention of clinicians is now moving to powerful imaging techniques such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and ultrasound to obtain a more accurate estimation of BC. The aim of this review is to present the state of the art of the imaging techniques that are currently available to measure BC and that can be applied to the study of BC changes in the elderly, outlining advantages and disadvantages of each technique.
  • ||||||||||  Trial completion date, Trial primary completion date:  Post - Hospital Syndrome: Profile of Functional Status by Malnutrition (clinicaltrials.gov) -  Jan 30, 2020
    P=N/A,  N=200, Recruiting,
    The aim of this review is to present the state of the art of the imaging techniques that are currently available to measure BC and that can be applied to the study of BC changes in the elderly, outlining advantages and disadvantages of each technique. • ||||||||||  Clinical, Review, Journal:  Exercise prescription in patients with cirrhosis: Recommendations for clinical practice. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 28, 2020
    After considering those factors, an individually tailored exercise program should be developed for each patient, according to the points stated above and the desired goal. Information about exercise-limiting factors, type of exercise prescribed, monitoring methods, and concomitant nutritional therapy is provided in the present review.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  The Role of the Molecular Clock in Promoting Skeletal Muscle Growth and Protecting against Sarcopenia. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 28, 2020
    Therefore, the aim of this review is to present the latest findings demonstrating how circadian rhythms in skeletal muscle are important for maintenance of the cellular physiology, metabolism and function of skeletal muscle. Moreover, we will present the current knowledge about the tissue-specific functions of the molecular clock in skeletal muscle.
