- |||||||||| Retrospective data, Review, Journal: Sarcopenia as an independent predictor of the surgical outcomes of patients with inflammatory bowel disease: a meta-analysis. (Pubmed Central) - Oct 27, 2020
Although the analysis of raw data did not reveal significant differences between the two groups with respect to the rate of surgery and postoperative complications (OR = 1.826; 95% CI 0.913-3.654; p = 0.089 and OR = 3.265; 95% CI 0.575-18.557; p = 0.182, respectively), the analysis of adjusted data identified sarcopenia as an independent predictor for both of the undesirable outcomes (OR = 2.655; 95% CI 1.121-6.336; p = 0.027 and OR = 6.097; 95% CI 1.756-21.175; p = 0.004, respectively). Thus, early detection of sarcopenia in patients with IBD is important to prevent undesirable outcomes.

In addition, many reports suggest that sarcopenia be used as an adjustment factor for the selection criteria of LT and that sarcopenia be incorporated into the selection criteria for living donor LT in our center. In this article, based on a literature review, we aim to identify the current definition of sarcopenia, the available methods of measurement, the potential novel interventions for the treatment of malnutrition and the significance of sarcopenia in LT.
- |||||||||| Clinical, Review, Journal: EVALUATION OF THE ELDERLY PATIENT WITH CANCER (Pubmed Central) - Oct 26, 2020
The rapid growth rate of the elderly population in Israel, together with the continuous development of oncology and cancer treatments, indicate the need to allocate resources and efforts to treat this unique population. We recommend an integration of geriatricians in the multidisciplinary team that treats this population.
- |||||||||| Journal: Machine Learning-Based Physical Activity Tracking with a view to Frailty Analysis. (Pubmed Central) - Oct 26, 2020
The first one is based on deep learning, where feature extraction is done manually, by constructing activity images from raw signals and applying convolutional neural networks to learn optimal features from these images. The second one is based on shallow learning, where hundreds of handcrafted features are extracted manually, followed by a novel feature selection approach to retain the most discriminant subset.Clinical relevance- This analysis is an indispensable prerequisite to develop efficacious way in order to identify people with frailty using sensors and moreover, to take on the challenge of frailty prevention, an actual world health organization priority.
- |||||||||| Yervoy (ipilimumab) / Ono Pharma, BMS
Biomarker, Journal, IO Biomarker: Macroangiopathy is a positive predictive factor for response to immunotherapy. (Pubmed Central) - Oct 25, 2020 This IRB approved retrospective analysis encompassed 147 patients with ipilimumab therapy...Furthermore, single visceral organ and/or soft tissue involvement significantly decreased progression risk (p = 0.01), whereas increased S100B level showed a trend towards PFS shortening (p = 0.05). In conclusion, degree of macroangiopathy and sarcopenia were independent predictors for outcome to immunotherapy and of equivalent significance compared to other clinical biomarkers.
- |||||||||| Clinical, Review, Journal: Effects of acute oral feeding on protein metabolism and muscle protein synthesis in individuals with cancer. (Pubmed Central) - Oct 25, 2020
Poor outcomes are not restricted to those who are underweight with severe weight loss; sarcopenia alone has been shown to be a prognostic marker across all body mass index categories, ranging from underweight to obesity To understand the mechanism of nutrition interventions in cancer and to develop effective future interventions, it is necessary to look at the acute effects of feeding on the response of the body and the ability to reach an anabolic response. The aim of this study was to explore and summarize the emerging evidence on metabolic effects of acute oral interventions on whole body protein kinetics and muscle protein synthesis in individuals with cancer.
- |||||||||| Review, Journal: Bone Marrow Adipose Tissue Quantification by Imaging. (Pubmed Central) - Oct 24, 2020
Currently, MAT measurement is being tested and validated by several techniques. However, purpose-specific adaptation of existing imaging technologies and, more importantly, development of new modalities to quantitatively measure MAT are yet to be done.
- |||||||||| Clinical, Journal: Safety of a Combined WB-EMS and High-Protein Diet Intervention in Sarcopenic Obese Elderly Men. (Pubmed Central) - Oct 24, 2020
Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was impaired neither by the high-protein supplementation alone nor in combination with WB-EMS (CG 76.0 mL/min/1.73 m [71.9-82.2] vs Protein 73.2 mL/min/1.73 m [63.0-78.9] vs WB-EMS&P 74.6 mL/min/1.73 m [62.8-84.1], p = 0.478). In conclusion, even in the vulnerable group of sarcopenic obese seniors, the combination of WB-EMS with a high-protein intake revealed no short-term, negative impact on the eGFR, but potential consequences for the cardiovascular system need to be addressed in future studies.
- |||||||||| Clinical, Review, Journal: A clinical guide to the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of osteosarcopenia. (Pubmed Central) - Oct 23, 2020
Pharmaceutical treatments for osteosarcopenia are currently unavailable, although research trials are underway. This review provides an update from basic and clinical sciences on the biology, epidemiology (prevalence, risk factors and diagnosis) and treatments for osteosarcopenia, and recommends future research priorities to improve health outcomes for those living with or at risk of osteosarcopenia.
- |||||||||| Journal: Imaging of sarcopenia: old evidence and new insights. (Pubmed Central) - Oct 22, 2020
The medical and scientific radiological community should promote specific educational course to spread awareness among professionals. KEY POINTS: • DXA is an accurate, reproducible, and widely available imaging modality to evaluate body composition, being the most commonly used radiological tool to diagnose sarcopenia in clinical practice • CT and MR are the gold standard imaging modalities to assess muscle mass and quality, but no clear cutoff values have been reported to identify sarcopenia, limiting the application of these modalities to research purposes • US has shown to be accurate in the evaluation of muscle trophism, especially in the thigh, but its current application in sarcopenia is limited.
- |||||||||| Review, Journal: Understanding muscle regenerative decline with aging: new approaches to bring back youthfulness to aged stem cells. (Pubmed Central) - Oct 22, 2020
Here, we discuss current understanding of the molecular processes regulating satellite-cell maintenance throughout life and how age-related failure of these processes contributes to muscle aging. We also highlight the emerging field of rejuvenating biology to restore features of youthfulness in satellite cells, with the ultimate goal of slowing down or reversing the age-related decline in muscle regeneration.
