  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Strength and multimorbidity among community-dwelling elderly from southern Brazil. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 23, 2021
Results from the present study indicated an association between manual grip strength and multimorbidity among this population, and the effect measures were greater in men. Manual grip strength proved to be a good marker of health in this population, especially in those who did not present with myopenia.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Sarcopenia in Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: New challenges for clinical practice. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 21, 2021
Sarcopenia is a key indicator of adverse outcomes in patients with cirrhosis, such as hepatic decompensation, poor quality of life and premature mortality. Patients with NAFLD and advanced fibrosis/cirrhosis should undergo anthropometric measures (hand grip strength), dry body mass index and measures of physical frailty (including muscle function, not just mass) to enable targeted early interventions of nutrition (low fat, 1.5g/kg/day protein intake, 2-3 hourly food intake) and exercise (combined resistance and aerobic).
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Targeting cPLA derived lipid hydroperoxides as a potential intervention for sarcopenia. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 21, 2021
In contrast, inhibition of cPLA in vivo mitigates LOOH production and muscle atrophy and maintains individual muscle fiber size while decreasing oxidative damage. Overall, we show that loss of innervation in several muscle atrophy models including aging induces generation of LOOHs produced by arachidonic acid metabolism in the cPLA pathway contributing to loss of muscle mass.
  • ||||||||||  Retrospective data, Journal:  Letter: TIPSS and reversal of sarcopenia. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 21, 2021
However, the prognostic value of these assessments for decision-making about disposition (admission or discharge) may still be warranted. No abstract available
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Dietary nitrate supplementation increases diaphragm peak power in old mice. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 20, 2021
Nitrate supplementation did not change the abundance of calcium-handling proteins in the diaphragm of old mice, in contrast with findings from the limb muscles of young mice in previous studies. Our findings suggest that nitrate supplementation enhances myofibrillar protein function without affecting the phosphorylation status of key myofibrillar proteins.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Osteoporosis in the geriatric population (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 16, 2021
Anti-osteoporotic drugs are effective and well tolerated in the geriatric population and should be initiated to prevent fractures in high risk cohorts and for secondary prevention. Recently, coordinator-based fracture liaison services have been shown to effectively reduce fracture risk in the high risk geriatric population.

  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Association of advanced glycation end products with sarcopenia and frailty in chronic kidney disease. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 15, 2021
AGE accumulated in the gastrocnemius muscle of 5/6 nephrectomy mice in association with morphological abnormalities, capillary rarefaction, and mitochondrial dysfunction, all of which were completely inhibited by DNA-aptamer raised against AGE. Our present findings may suggest the pathological role of AGE in sarcopenia and frailty in CKD.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Tail suspension is useful as a sarcopenia model in rats. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 15, 2021
TS and SHR presented sarcopenic phenotypes in terms of muscle mass, muscle contraction and CSA. TS is a useful technique for providing muscle mass atrophy and weakness in an experimental model of sarcopenia in rats.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Nutrition in Cancer Care: A Brief, Practical Guide With a Focus on Clinical Practice. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 15, 2021
The authors have summarized the most important challenges, evidence-based recommendations, and common clinical scenarios to bridge the gap between comprehensive guidelines and clinical practice, where brief concrete advice is preferred to systematic reviews. Furthermore, an easy applicable overview is provided, which can be used as a guide during daily routines.
