  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Nutrition and the COVID-19 pandemic (Pubmed Central) -  Feb 2, 2021
    The nutritional approach is a dynamic process that includes strengthening the normal diet and specialized nutritional treatment (SNT) with the use of oral supplements, enteral nutrition, or parenteral nutrition according to each patient's requirements and needs. In this update, we review aspects regarding the close relationship between diet, nutrition, and immunity; their impact on the progress of SARS-CoV-2 infection; and the therapeutic strategies proposed by the consensus of experts of scientific societies.

    Despite the current difficulties imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, we are confident that the IIM community will continue to grow and deliver significant contributions to the understanding of muscle development and function, the pathogenesis of muscular diseases and the development of novel therapeutic approaches. Here, abstracts of the meeting illustrate the new results on basic, translational, and clinical research, confirming that our field is strong and healthy.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Influence of sarcopenia focused on critically ill patients. (Pubmed Central) -  Feb 2, 2021
    An intensivist should be aware that sarcopenia may be present in critically ill patients. Although the main modalities against sarcopenia are early mobilization and nutritional support, they can only prevent its development and may have positive effects on prognosis rather than treating the existing sarcopenia.
  • ||||||||||  Trial completion:  Insulin Resistance, Sarcopenia and Plasma BAIBA Levels (clinicaltrials.gov) -  Jan 31, 2021

  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Zebrafish models of sarcopenia. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 30, 2021
    We also outline challenges in interpreting zebrafish mutant phenotypes and in translating them to human disease. Finally, we conclude with recommendations on future directions to leverage the large body of tools developed in small fish for the needs of genomic exploration in sarcopenia.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  The role of nutrition in pediatric oncology. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 29, 2021
    These observations have stimulated explorations of underlying mechanisms, including dysbiosis of the gut microbiome, and structured nutritional interventions to redress adverse outcomes.Expert opinion: Studies of the gut microbiome and metabolome have yielded important information on the pathogenesis of malnutrition in children, providing new avenues for interventions. Combinations of plant products that are inexpensive and readily available in LMICs have been shown to "mature" the microbiome and the corresponding plasma proteome in children with acute malnutrition, offering the prospect of cost-effective remedies that are tested in children with cancer.
  • ||||||||||  Biomarker, Review, Journal:  Bridging the gap between serum biomarkers and biomechanical tests in musculoskeletal ageing. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 29, 2021
    If this is true, no one test can be used to assess muscle status but rather a battery of tests is necessary for a comprehensive assessment. More research is required to provide information for researchers to optimally design studies by using the muscle assessment method that is best associated with selected specific outcomes.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Prevalence of Sarcopenia in Community-Dwelling Older Adults in Valencia, Spain. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 29, 2021
    The SARC-F questionnaire diagnosed 40% of the sarcopenia cases present in the study. More thorough research is needed to continue using the EWGSOP2 criteria in different populations to establish a correct prevalence of sarcopenic disease in different populations of the world.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Radiologic Definition of Sarcopenia in Chronic Liver Disease. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 29, 2021
    Few studies have evaluated the sarcopenia of chronic liver disease using ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging, and more studies are needed. Unification of the measurement method and cut-off value would facilitate a more systematic and universal prognosis evaluation in patients with chronic liver disease.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Pilot Study on Genetic Associations With Age-Related Sarcopenia. (Pubmed Central) -  Jan 29, 2021
    Given the importance of research on this disease, further genetic studies are needed to better understand the genetic risk underlying sarcopenia. We believe that this small-scale study will help to demonstrate that there is still much to be discovered in this field.
