  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Exercise as a Therapeutic Strategy for Sarcopenia in Heart Failure: Insights into Underlying Mechanisms. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 7, 2021
Currently, standard treatments for slowing muscle loss in patients with HF are not available. Therefore, here, we review the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying sarcopenia in HF as well as current knowledge regarding the beneficial effects of exercise on sarcopenia in HF and related mechanisms, including hormonal changes, myostatin, oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, autophagy, the ubiquitin-proteasome system, and insulin resistance.
  • ||||||||||  Retrospective data, Journal:  Effect of Exercise Habit on Skeletal Muscle Mass Varies with Protein Intake in Elderly Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Retrospective Cohort Study. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 7, 2021
Compared with patients with exercise habit and adequate protein intake, the odds ratio for decreasing SMI was 2.50 (0.90-6.90, p = 0.078) in patients with no exercise habit and inadequate protein intake, 3.58 (1.24-10.4, p = 0.019) in those with exercise habit and inadequate protein intake, and 3.03 (1.27-7.22, p = 0.012) in those with no exercise habit and adequate protein intake, after adjusting for covariates. Therefore, exercise habit without adequate protein intake was associated with an increased risk of decreasing SMI compared with exercise habit with adequate protein intake.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Adiposity in Survivors of Cancer in Childhood: How is it Measured and Why Does it Matter? (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 7, 2021
The authors highlight the importance of a harmonized approach to the assessment of body composition in pediatric cancer survivors and early identification of risk using "gold-standard" measurements. This will improve our understanding of the significance of adiposity and sarcopenia in this population, help identify thresholds predictive of metabolic risk, and ultimately prevent or ameliorate the long-term metabolic and cardiovascular impacts on health experienced by survivors of cancer in childhood.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Extensive Bioactivity of Astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis in Human. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 7, 2021
Other ongoing clinical trials and case studies are examining chronic diseases such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, diabetes, diabetic nephropathy, and CVD, as well as infertility, atopic dermatitis, androgenetic alopecia, ulcerative colitis, and sarcopenia. In the near future, astaxanthin may secure a firm and signature position as medical food.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Acute Effects of Surgical and FFP2 Face Masks on Physiological Responses and Strength Performance in Persons with Sarcopenia. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 7, 2021
Additionally, no impact of wearing a mask was found on heart rate, heart rate variability, blood lactate concentration (WM: 4.17 ± 1.89; SM: 4.49 ± 2.07; and FFP2: 5.28 ± 2.45 mmol/L (p = 0.447)), or rating of perceived exertion. Wearing a surgical or FFP2 face mask during a resistance training session resulted in similar strength performance and physiological responses than the same exercise without a mask in persons with sarcopenia.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Integrating Muscle Health in Predicting the Risk of Asymptomatic Vertebral Fracture in Older Adults. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 7, 2021
Wearing a surgical or FFP2 face mask during a resistance training session resulted in similar strength performance and physiological responses than the same exercise without a mask in persons with sarcopenia. Although TLM was associated with bone quantity and quality in both sexes, sarcopenia and a low TBS were significant predictors of asymptomatic VF only in male participants.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Emerging Treatment Options for Sarcopenia in Chronic Liver Disease. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 7, 2021
The inhibition of the myostatin-activin receptor signaling pathway and hormonal therapy might be the most promising therapeutic options in combination with an ammonia-lowering approach in sarcopenic patients with chronic liver diseases. This review focuses on current and emerging treatment options for sarcopenia in chronic liver diseases with underlying mechanisms to counteract this condition.
  • ||||||||||  Journal, Checkpoint inhibition, IO biomarker:  Progressive Sarcopenia Correlates with Poor Response and Outcome to Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor Therapy. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 7, 2021
This study shows BSP delivered by BSP-HAP system has potential for application in the treatment and prevention of sarcopenia in the future. Both progressive sarcopenia and an increasing skeletal muscle fat deposition are associated with poor response and outcome to ICI therapy, which might help to guide treatment decisions during ICI therapy.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Microbiome, Immunosenescence, and Chronic Kidney Disease. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 7, 2021
Multiple factors such as the immune system, environment, medication, diet, and genetic endowment are involved in determining the age of the microbiome in health and disease. Our present review promotes recently acquired knowledge and is expected to inspire researchers to advance studies and investigations on the involved pathways of the gut microbiota and kidney axis.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Investigating sarcopenia awareness using Google Trends. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 7, 2021
In this set-up, Google Trends could be an important tool to evaluate public interest in geriatric topics. It could help to convince policy makers that there is need for awareness programs on sarcopenia.
  • ||||||||||  atuzaginstat (COR388) / Cortexyme
Review, Journal:  Oral frailty and neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 7, 2021
On this bases, COR388, a bacterial protease inhibitor targeting Porphyromonas gingivalis implicated in periodontal disease, is now being tested in a double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase II/III study in mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, oral status may be an important contributor to general health, including Alzheimer's disease and late-life cognitive disorders, suggesting the central role of preventive strategies targeting the novel oral frailty phenotype and including maintenance and improvement of oral function and nutritional status to reduce the burden of both oral dysfunction and frailty.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Sarcopenia in a patient with most serious complications after highly invasive surgeries treated with nutrition, rehabilitation, and pharmacotherapy: a case report. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 7, 2021
The appropriate timing and order of pharmacotherapy, nutrient administration, exercise therapy, and team collaboration may enable elderly patients with severe (secondary) sarcopenia and postoperative complications to regain self-sustained walking.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Beyond Rheumatoid Arthritis Evaluation: What are We Missing? (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 2, 2021
In recent years, much progress has been made in the evaluation of inflammation and disease activity, however, there are other factors that have a high impact on the quality of life of these patients, such as depression, anxiety, fatigue, sleep disorders, suicidal behavior, fibromyalgia, sexual activity, sarcopenia, frailty, cachexia and obesity that are not always evaluated by rheumatologists. This review shows that the evaluation and timely detection of these aspects in patients with RA could interfere with the prognosis and improve their quality of life.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Relationship Between Fear of Falling, Fear-Related Activity Restriction, Frailty, and Sarcopenia. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 1, 2021
FOF with/without FAR is highly prevalent among community-dwelling older adults, especially in those with sarcopenia, prefrailty, and frailty, with significant negative impact on function, quality of life, social network, and mental health. Further research is needed to investigate the value of population-level screening, causal relationship, and efficacy of comprehensive intervention strategies.
